As a Greek growing up in Sydney, I relate to Nick so much. But this video really showed his raw intellect, knowledge and class. He’s a national treasure.
Mark Mitchell did do impersonations just as Nick said. But when Nick mentioned ‘did not impersonate a real person regarding Con the Fruiterer, for the record Mark Mitchell did impersonate a real person. That person was my uncle, a fruiterer named Andrew in Hawthorn, Glenferrie Road where Mark Mitchell at the time had lived. Mark was so fascinated by my uncles explosive nature and use of really catchy phrases, like ‘how are you today’ and ‘beauuuuutiful’ that he successfully created the ‘Con the Fruiterer’ (and used by the way Andrew’s brother’s name instead which was Con - more stereotypical I guess) character that we all loved and know of today. One final comment, my uncle was at the time the only fruiterer in Melbourne permitted to freely advertise the face and image of Mark Mitchell in character at his shop and was very proud to be able to do so. You can tell the Con the fruiterer was based on a real person because his mannerisms were real but I think Mark Mitchell went a bit far when he brought out Marika and started talking about the daughters all the time like they were a bunch of animals. It was not very funny from the eyes of a “wog”. I get that the demographic that it was aimed at thought it was funny but A Comedy Company was a lame excuse for a show and it had a lame audience.
@@lukey8511 thanks for sharing. One other thing you might not be aware of, surnames which end in -poulos in the Greek language, in the English language end in -son. For example, Gianno-poulos in Greek, is actually John-son in English, Petro-poulos in Greek is actually Peter-son in English and so on. Hence why there are so many -poulos’ going around as there are so many -son’s. Thx for reading :)

I have a Scottish background and i was put into the 'wog" group.......best thing ever !! Italians, Greek, Yugoslavia, maltase etc, best time of my life 🙂 And the food that their mums cooked, well 🙂🙂 Was the strong culture they all had, like the Scottish. I was proud to be a white "wog" !
My grandparents much like nicks parents left Spain after Spains civil war and after ww2 (fascists v communists just like Greece) and set up their lives here and I’m so thankful that they came here and gave us the opportunity to live good and successful lives free of the struggles that they had in there lives.

My mum and dad had a milk bar in Brisbane and we lived above it. We were the same. Never closed. Then they got into a grocery shop and they took Sunday afternoon off and would take us to the beach. In 1970 they took us to Greece for 6 months. That was the best time of our lives, when we came back it was back to the shop. I miss them.

Aussie born moved to Greece and returned 6 years later then the first wog boy movie came out, when I was in Highschool. It shaped me into who I am today. Amazing watching it as an adult knowing the background of how it was made and the context

So true. Regards our upbringing, the scars and the work ethic. And then there is the guilt. I saw a clip of Mark recently where he mentions there is a sense of guilt too when you achieve things and move to good neighbourhoods. As a Bankstown boy myself I cannot tell you how true this is.

I bumped into Nick once back in the day when the Wog Boy was new and fresh. I said hello but he was so rude, and I lost respect for him because I was so disappointed. Disappointed that what was essentially a hero for bringing us wogs into the mainstream didn't have 60 seconds for a chat, 30 even... This interview has turned around what I think of him. Thanks Mark.
I concur. I met Nick in 1995 at my shop in Melbourne CBD, where he complained and cursed parking inspectors for issuing him with a ticket while his car was parked out the front in a no standing zone. He showed no love for any responsibility for his fine nor any love for us around him at the time. Just a love for money and wow, isn't that love still obvious. Rude and completely self-absorbed.
It hasn't been and apparently won't be shown at Cinema Mount Isa, for unknown reasons. This makes me sad that we have, again, missed out on something good that is uniquely Australian. 😢😭

A few of the old Melbourne based groups, be it the Oakleigh wogs or the Northcote/Collingwood/Clifton Hill boys as they were known back then fought hard, physically to stand there ground and not be intimidated from racism and abuse. I remember the Northcote boys one Friday night 1987 at the Northcote Bowls (Since demolished) have a regular Aussie 'Skip' bowling customer throw racist abuse, wog boy, go back to your country etc, because his regular parking spot on that Friday nightwas taken up by a wog and did not want to park a few bays down that were free....Lets just say, that was the beginning and end of his vehicle as it was written off within 2 minutes. Unfortunately some of these past 'Legends' are not with us today as have since passed on prematurely young, and most alive today heading 60 of age should be proud of themselves as Nick says 'Survivors'. It was a tough era, an interesting era for me being 50 now to watch the older boys fight (fists and bats for bats) no knives like nowdays simply to fit in the lucky country AU without racism abuse. Ultimately unbeknown to them 40 years on have created a better upbringing in society to preceeding ethnic generations that has since reduced this past racism enormously and the message of past has made it mark. I can relate to all that Nick has created and only see it as an era in recent history that you either grew up in it and know all about it or as a new generation growing up may simply be interested to know what all the fuss back then was. Therfore the story about Wog Boys continue........

It was a good show, though I felt it was never representative of Australia today, Home & Away is the same. TV media needs more of a cross section as well.

Hey Nick you grew up in the wrong area mate outside the suburbs it was very different I went to school in the 50s and early 60s with lots of kids from Italy, Greece ,Switzerland, Holland and Germany even from the UK and I am friends with a lot of them to this day we never had any kind of racism in the country a lot of these kids didn't speak English but it never mattered we all learned to communicate and enjoyed life ,Oh and my heritage is English, Welsh ,Italian and Spanish and Strayan

Nick got angry at me because I needed to mop a drink that he spilt and he was trying to pick up a girl. He was trying to pick up a girl every week, and because he knew the owner, our manager and myself tried to stop him from entering areas of the club that was only for staff. Nick Giannopoulos is a rude and arrogant wanker, who thinks because he is a B grade celebrity, he can do what he wants.

The last person that called me a WOG, went to sleep. It is is a derogatory word, like other slurs based on race, colour, ethnicity or sexual preference. It would be good to hear about what Giannopoulos has to say about Greeks, Italians, slavs etc being racist today towards new migrants and Indigenous people, and how terrible it is.

Being a white man from a white family that were homeless and grew up in the south west in housing commission homes , we are BROKE as fuck . No good. Shit clothes , shoes worn. For years and generally very poor. It’s only through hard work all my life that I finally own a home and can afford kids. And yes. White Aussies copped and DO cop racism more than you know . And it’s no joke. We don’t even talk about it. It DOES happen regularly. We were NEVER racists and associated with every kind race and colour.

Hey Nick you grew up in the wrong area mate outside the suburbs it was very different I went to school in the 50s and early 60s with lots of kids from Italy, Greece ,Switzerland, Holland and Germany even from the UK and I am friends with a lot of them to this day we never had any kind of racism in the country a lot of these kids didn't speak English but it never mattered we all learned to communicate and enjoyed life ,Oh and my heritage is English, Welsh ,Italian and Spanish and Strayan

Nick got angry at me because I needed to mop a drink that he spilt and he was trying to pick up a girl. He was trying to pick up a girl every week, and because he knew the owner, our manager and myself tried to stop him from entering areas of the club that was only for staff.

It would be good to hear about what Giannopoulos has to say about Greeks, Italians, slavs etc being racist today towards new migrants and Indigenous people, and how terrible it is.

Great podcast and episode fellas. I think you are missing one thing here. Being a white man from a white family that were homeless and grew up in the south west in housing commission homes , we are BROKE as fuck . No good. Shit clothes , shoes worn. For years and generally very poor. It’s only through hard work all my life that I finally own a home and can afford kids. And yes. White Aussies copped and DO cop racism more than you know . And it’s no joke. We don’t even talk about it. It DOES happen regularly. We were NEVER racists and associated with every kind race and colour.
