My dad has a bunch of really big ones in giant pots around his yard. They have to be moved into the greenhouse every winter because of our climate. They are so big now, around 10-12 years old, and I have to help him move them every winter. There is no protective clothing that can keep you completely safe, especially because we have to improvise every time because they keep getting bigger. Every time, my hands and face are covered in the tiny, invisible pricks. One time my dad was standing on a plastic lawn chair (stupid idea, I know) and the chair broke, making him fall straight down into a big cactus. He was only wearing a t-shirt and shorts. It took about 3-4 showers and 2 days to get them all out. So worth the hassle though. They are so tasty. We mostly eat them fresh, but we did make them into jam once, and natural food dye for Easter one year.

The ones I've eaten were tasty. I can see why the birds like them so much

I ran into one of them with a motorbike when I was about 14. It's something I will never forget lol

It’s also a highly invasive weed. Awful to deal with as if any part of them hits the ground it will reshoot.
