      Yeah I think that kind of shows why R.E.D. does have a place because inevitably, while a good solid intuitive transformation is something that can be appreciated from an engineering perspective and the idea of it being a puzzle, some transformations to be totally frank are the kind that you are only going to do once to try it, maybe again to turn the alt mode back into a robot, and then you'll never bother with it ever again because it's either frustrating, it takes an unnecessarily long part of your day to get down even when you know what you're doing or simply put you're not really interested because truly you bought the thing for the character.

      @the-aspiring-creator4249 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@nameforcomments4092 Of course it should be noted it varies from person-to-person. Much like how one transformation scheme can be considered by someone to be extremely complex and irritating and can be considered by another to be easy, there are quite a few Transformers fans who would obviously be into occasionally messing with figures and so on. That being said, there are a decent amount of people who either due to them caring more for the character than the alt-mode, not liking the transformation because it's too frustrating or simply put the matter of time and motivation who really don't care about that all that much and so a figure series like R.E.D. gives them that option.

    • @the-aspiring-creator4249
      @the-aspiring-creator4249 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@nameforcomments4092 If you don't mind me adding something, speaking for myself as someone who owns some R.E.D. figures alongside a ton of regular Transformers. I take one look at my shelf and occasionally, I do take a figure off it and transform it to its alt-mode and back again and change up displays... but there are so many toys I either won't do that with just because of the sheer amount or the transformation itself like for example leader ROTF Prime. That transformation is just a NO all things considered as far as just fiddling with a figure is concerned. Same goes for some of my other big bots or even some of my third party figs which are really cool in both modes... but they also have the kind of crazy intricate transformation I just can't be bugged to go through just for the sake of fiddling with a toy. So if anything, stuff like R.E.D. is gonna be right up my alley.

      It's a phrase that gets thrown around I'd say just about EVERY time one of these collectibles is made. When Flame Toys first came onto the scene? All I'd see is people complaining that the thing didn't transform. ThreeZero? Every release results in comments about how if it transformed then it would matter. Revoltech? If it wasn't rather understandable disappointment with Pat Lee's artstyle for the early figures, the typical complaints about the Bayverse for the movie ones or just dislike for the stylization on the most recent iterations, it's "Why pay for a Transformer that doesn't transform?". It kind of gets tiring especially as people clearly miss the point of what these things are made for.

    I'm a teacher and considered purchasing Optimus for my bookshelf. It seemed a good balance between letting my geek flag fly and being a "mature professional." Then I sat there wondering if that was the best use of $20. Then my brain said, "Yes, it is, but just Optimus? Shouldn't you get Megatron so he's not lonely?" Then I decided it wasn't the best use of $40. I let the doubt win and left them on the shelf. In my store they've been on the shelves for a bit, so I'm hoping to see them go on clearance. Of course the last time I went, only Arcee was left, so maybe not.
    But if I do find them on a clearance shelf or in an Ollie's, they're a definite buy.
    I definitely see the Heroes of Cybertron line as their lineage.

    I actually like the RED figures way more than I thought I would. I enjoy the concept of just having animation cel figures; The charm is in the screen accuracy and these do it so well that I don't miss the transforming element. Thinking about it from the perspective of animation fans who may not necessarily be into the transforming element anyway but might love to have a character screen design accurate figure, these are perfect.
    And as someone who is neurodivergent, I remember being really easily frustrated and discouraged as a kid when I couldn't get a transformation to work out quite right on my own even when doing my best to follow the instructions; These types of non-transforming toys might be ideal for some neurodivergent younger people who don't want to fuss with all of that, among other things that might be frustrating (like which mode to display it in???). And if the show is someone's special interest, they might just want an animation accurate figure anyway. If these had been available when I was younger, I would have preferred these! Less stressful, looks more like the show.
    So I have to say, RED series is looking pretty good to me so far! Thanks for another great review. :)

      Honestly I think I can kind of see it because while the Furai models are cool, they're still a bit more pricey than what some people are willing to pay for (And if you just want figures of the characters god forbid then be prepared to punch your wallet's throat in), the ReAction stuff's neat but most of the novelty comes from the packaging and the fact they're hearkening back explicitly to Kenner's OG Star Wars output. Super7's offerings from what I've seen are cool but they don't quite have that same level of poseability. Really I'd say these are Transformers figures marketed to the Marvel Legends crowd, people who aren't looking to pay too terribly much but they still want a good representation of the character they saw on screen to pose and mess with and R.E.D. fits rather neatly into that area.

    • @charlienash1050
      @charlienash1050 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@the-aspiring-creator4249 if that's what they want, then why not pay the same price for the WFC line up of toys. They are still very possable, pretty accurate and perfect for display. So why pay the same price for a transformer which goes against everything a transformer toy stands for and has some really useless accessories and not that much better in articulation

    • @the-aspiring-creator4249
      @the-aspiring-creator4249 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@charlienash1050 Simple. Because WFC may not necessarily appeal to them. See we as Transformers fans who like the transformations and such will obviously see more value in something like the WFC line with its variety of characters, abundance of posability and other features but for some people? Honestly they may truthfully only care about the actual character and not necessarily if they could turn into something. Plus as good as some toys can get with being as accurate as humanly possible while also being able to transform? There is still ALWAYS gonna be something off in one way or another and then there's the matter of sometimes how in order to achieve those levels of accuracy, transformations have to be insanely complex and if that toy just so happens to be packaged in its alt-mode... well let's just say that's a headache and a half.
      Granted, that's not really applicable to WFC since its transformations are fairly simple but regardless, there are still little things that for a fan of Transformers who may just care about the characters and not really about the main gimmick of the line, a casual fan who's not really interested in the regular toyline or a fan who just likes the idea of having a good straight action figure of a character alongside the transformable stuff, will make this kind of figure desirable. I mean it's why you see people pay for things like Revoltech or ThreeZero and honestly why I think more people have a love for Action Masters these days alongside the nostalgia.

    Felt this way from the start - if they're not trying to be as good as the other options on the market (from their own company, might I add), those competitors just become... BETTER options.

    The best red figures are going to be the boys with designs that currently would render accurate proportions and transformation impossible to afford, like TFP designs, or the FOC/WFC game styles, or, the beast wars figures that the mere effort of transformation would add lines and fragile parts to.

    I wasn't really interested in RED until I saw that Starscream and now I really, REALLY need that.
    Speaking of Backstab McGhee, his Studio Series Bumblebee Movie figure just showed up and it is something else. I'd like to see your take on it.
    I think the point of them is for old school collectors who want a super accurate robot mode unencumbered by the need to turn into another thing, which usually (but not always) leads to compromises in some form or another. As much as I LOVE Earthrise Optimus, the great slabs on his inner shins are not great. I have a friend who was about 10 in '84 who insists the only good toys are G1 originals and reissues, toys of characters that didn't have G1 toys, and SOME of the Masterpiece figures. But he also really likes the N-scale figurines for having super accurate sculpts and decent paint jobs, so RED would be good for something that can be posed and played with while looking "correct" to him.

    I think you really summed it up excellently: These Transformers toys are very much for people who... don't like Transformers. I myself just can't be bothered with the transformation gimmick and am more interested in getting the best possible representation of the actual character themselves (which counts in screen/show-accuracy), rather than having a character toy who's looks are just that slight bit compromised by the need to transform. I already got the Prime Arcee and am planning to get the Knockout from this line simply because they look so much better, are more poseable, and more accurate to the show counterparts I love.

  • @SpectrumAnalysis
    @SpectrumAnalysis ปีที่แล้ว

    I think I get where this niche sits. It's for people who want animation accurate bot modes without the usual compromises that having an alt mode brings.
    Like how often have you seen a near perfect robot mode ruined by kibble or a clusterfuck back pack or a slight proportional problem brought on by having to turn into something?

    the Prime Arcee one looks phenomenal and fills a space that just can't be covered by transforming figures. I think that's the niche they should pursue... Like finally a G1 Arcee without a car on her back or a Beast Wars Dinobot that looks like the screen model without costing MP prices... an IDW Rodimus would be cool?

  • @MauldtheMan

    Also, I think to answer your question, Thew, REDs are for folks like me, folks who love Transformers and love messing with and appreciating their transformations and the engineering that goes into them--but who universally leaves them in robot mode. All the time. So when I can buy a figure that's of similar size as the rest of my Bots but who has a nigh-perfect robot mode, well, it goes right on the shelf! I wouldn't buy just ANY character as a RED but definitely ones whose design stirs me or one that never works well enough as a transforming robot toy. Or characters I like enough to buy an MP of (but don't want to spend modern MP cash on).

  • @fluffybeing7420
    @fluffybeing7420 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    "WeLl AcKsHuAlLy..." honestly, the niche filled by these things, I can honestly say is *me*! I've just never been very good at transforming the normal figures, and have always been drawn to the robot designs (and especially posability) to the point that I actually bought the toys and figured out how to painstakingly modify them into non-transforming show-accurate designs. That's fun, and I still do it, but the REDs are just-- exactly what I want from a Transformers toy. I think it's because I fell in love with the characters first, not the toys themselves. Also YOU ARE SO RIGHT, THEY'RE INCREDIBLE DRAWING AIDS😍

    Action masters need more love. My first transformer action figure ever was Action Master Megatron. To this day he's my favorite action figure of all time. A lot of that is nostalgia but still he's a good toy, and the R.E.D Megatron stands right next to him as just a really fun toy that looks awesome on your desk. Not to mention you just can't keep your hands off of him because of all the possibility so R.E.D Megatron mission accomplished. Thanks Thew your videos are consistently fun to watch and always give a good laugh.

    Sometimes you just want a 99% screen-accurate toy of the character that's not hampered by the engineering needs that being able to transform brings along. I actually had this exact idea like 20 years ago, when stuff like MP-44 or TE-01 or MP-36 weren't even dreamed of. And RED Megs has a better headsculpt that Siege or Earthrise, I kinda half want one just to see if I can swap the heads out (after I give him his proper Marvel comic black helmet paint, of course).

    So that means the Action Masters basically replaced the Pretenders, and was anyone upset that the Pretenders went away?
