If you want strong families, you fight poverty. If you want to reduce crime, you fight poverty. If you want an educated, empowered population, you fight poverty. If you want to reduce racism and climate change, you fight poverty. If you want better housing and healthcare, you fight poverty. If you want a strong happy, healthy country, you fight poverty.

What I find hilarious about religious conservatives is that religion proclaims an objective morality. As in, what is right or wrong is independent of time and place or who’s doing it. AND YET when asked about historical figures doing things that we, by modern standards, understand were horrible (like slavery) suddenly they’re the post-modern-neo-Marxist (or whatever lobster daddy says nowadays) that says all morality is relative and we can’t judge people by their actions if XYZ.

I don't learn from street names. I don't learn from the name of my school. I learned from books. I learned from teachers. I learned from studying. I learned from conversations. We don't need to keep/promote/celebrate disgusting people from our past to learn about them. Germany knows all about its past with exact zero statues of Hitler anywhere.

There's also a difference between Celebrating a historical individual and deifying them. If you lived at a time in which injustice was protected by law, you often had two choices 1. Try to live as justly as you could under an unjust system or 2. Toss your life on the scrap heap and give up what little power you had to live justly at all. It's the same today and we do the same thing. You can't compare, for example, Thomas Jefferson and Adolph Hitler but I've heard people on the extreme left do just that.

As far as psychologists and psychiatrists go, Dr. Phil pimped his patients for TV ratings and shows. The single most glaring example of this is when Britney Spears had her first mental breakdown and Phil roared up to the hospital that night and tried to sign her up to be on his show. Apart from that disgusting episode, most of his shows featured people in serious trouble who agreed to bare their problems on public television, hoping for whatever help in whatever clinic he made available. So no. Phil is not credible to be dissecting political or cultural issues. He's in a category similar to the one Dr. Oz was in and people eventually figured it out.

A requirement of being in the ministry was to remain apolitical. The church’s function is to instruct in the faith and to function in the community in a productive way. Like serving others, feeding the hungry, etc. I firmly believe my position isn’t to preach politics but the Gospel. If churches want to have tax free status they have no business preaching politics. Dr Phil that was a terrible comparison between changing a speed limit and changing the name of buildings or schools named after significant Confederate figures. The erection of statues and naming of schools, buildings and military bases for the most part happened during the Jim Crow era - a time when white people in the South were deliberately and systematically writing and enforcing racist laws and policies to violate the civil rights of black people. The Jim Crow Era is just a stain on our country. We can learn about it in history class but we do not have to continue to glorify it by having schools, government buildings and military bases keep the names of notorious Confederate traitors and thieves.

Phil’s assertion that the birth rate decline is due to reduced religiosity is ludicrous. My own mother was quite religious and she had an abortion because she didn’t want to have another child with a philandering oppressor, my father. And there is a difference between fertility and fertility rate. Infertility and low fertility are biological, not related to relogiosity, which is sociological, not biological.
The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) has linked lifestyle factors such as obesity, strenuous physical labor, excessive exercise, substance use, heavy drinking, high blood pressure and others to increasing rates of infertility.
And the choice of women to practice family planning derives from developments in fertility technology and women’s rights, not such a simple causation as religiosity.
I have watched Phil a lot over the years and agree with quite a lot of his assessments, but he clearly didn’t study a lot of research protocols for his Doctorate.

His argument was out of line from the start, but it is a debate tactic. Not a very honorable one, to say the least. Because he stated something where we are forced to agree with him. Now that we are on agreeable terms it is easier to take this agreeable thing and compare it to something unagreeable. Now we are more likely to agree to this aswell, due to the established consensus of agreeing with the one presenting the case. It's weird to explain and I forgot how this type of argument was called again. One thing is certain though: This is a tactic to persuade not to convice.
It was never about being reasonable. It was about him trying to force us to shut up and not demand change. It would have been easy to debunk this, if David would have asked him if he would agree, that a hypothetical "A. Hitler School" should keep it's name. Because that is exactly what he is arguing for. If he is trying to play it dirty, we have to put im on the spot and challenge the fundamental idea he is arguing for.

Lots of reasons it could be, but foretold in the bible as the falling away. So we knew it was coming. My take on it would be that parents sent or took their kids to church before but the parents didn’t live the life the other six days of the week. Kids grew up and didn’t bother with it because of the hypocrisy so they ignored the entire thing when it came to their own kids. Some churches are dead just going through the motions repeating the same ritual each Sunday. There is no life there. Either way now children grow up knowing nothing about God. The excuse is that they want the child to make their own choice. They can’t because they know nothing about Christianity. The bible says “My people perish for lack of KNOWLEDGE.”

@@joy1ess It's actually a lack of education that increases birth rates. The more educated will factor in financial costs and logistics of having a child, and won't likely have one. Poverty stricken Africa has lead to angry men not making enough to support a family so they go get drunk, rape their wives who go on to birth children, thereby compounding the problem of not being able to afford them. The more educated women are taking control of their lives, having a career or supporting their families in other ways. It's true even in America where the more educated the person, more likely they refuse to have children or will wait until they are financially stable to do it. Nevermind that housing is not as available and there are more apartment buildings than single family homes now.

The comparison that Dr. Phil makes between changing school names/removing statues to changes in speed limit laws was pretty pathetic in my opinion. There are very significant and obvious legal/moral/ethical issues around the ownership of human beings that simply don't exist with speed limit laws. You can't tell me there weren't good white people that knew full well owning other humans was wrong or that many people in the future would not have less than positive views on the subject.

I wish the public would STOP calling him “Doctor Phil” - he is NOT a medical doctor and he lost his license to practice clinical psychology approximately 15 years ago due to serious professional misconduct and ethics violations.
Please call him by his correct name - Phil McGraw.
He should NOT be called “a doctor” because he lost his license to practice clinical psychology because he violated professional ethics by having one of his patients drawn into a financial business relationship with him. He hired a patient of his to work for him, which is clearly illegal. He would have had his license taken away from the state license board and in order to avoid bad publicity - Phil McGraw and his lawyers/public relations handlers decided to make public statements “He decided not to continue praticing as a clinical psychologist in order to focus on publishing books, public speaking and his television show”.
Dr. Phil had a sexual relationship with a patient and she went to the state licensing board and filed a formal grievance. This was long before Dr. Phil became famous. Before he was famous he owned a sleazy fitness gym and there were numerous and VALID allegations of him sexually harrassing his female employees. His fitness gym also had serious financial problems with this business - it eventually went “bust” and closed.
What I dislike about Phil McGraw is his bombastic, egotistical personality. He is a “Know It All” and frequently insults and talks down to the guests on his show. The premise of the show is embarrassing and talking down to the guests. THIS is why people tune in to watch his program. I don’t like “Judge Judy” either - because she is rude, insulting to guests on her program BUT at least she is a REAL judge with a valid license……..unlike Phil McGraw who is banned from practicing as a clinical psychologist because he lost his license to practice.
Let’s face it - the primary premise of the Dr Phil show is it serves as an INFOMERCIAL for Phil McGraw to hawk his products, sell his merchandise, plug his sons tv shows and sell his wifes crappy skin care products. EVERY SINGLE EPISODE has “product placement” informercial segment with Phil McGraw selling his products

No it doesn't... However, a school named after a confederate or a statue of such a person sends the wrong message of what we're about.
Churches don't have statues of Satan, neither are they named after Lucifer, etc. because they obviously do not glorify the Devil.
People who object to having a building renamed so as not to honor a confederate or removing a statue of said person don't read history, Adam.

As a teacher myself, I have felt more and more pressure to change / monitor my language over the last decade than anytime in the past. Have I been fired? No. I need my job to feed my family. Jeffrey Dahmer had his parents. that’s why I don’t really agree with that psychology about the lack of a parent being the issue. I could find a outlier for every single thing that was said say for instance a parent dies. It’s ridiculous to think these things are the issues with crime. Crime is a choice no matter what situation you are in. There are people that come from suburban homes and go to retail outlets and commit thefts. This is why the conservative mind is complex and filled with conspiracy theories that they think of as fact. This odd way of thinking will have us all in a situation like the women and people of Afghanistan.

For Dr. Phil to be such a man of intellect and insight he really needs to replay this interview and listen to himself explain away the reasoning for renaming schools or institutions named after such blatant white nationalists as Robert E. Lee. I'm a 64 y/o white man and even I can see how imposing it would be for students of color to be sitting in the classroom of a school named in honor of a white nationalist. Mr. McGraw's unenlightened view that we should leave the names of white nationalists on monuments and buildings to remind us of our history reveals just how detached from reality he is that systematic racism is still alive and well in our country. He speaks as if prejudice and racism are things of the past and they certainly are not. For him to say he knows nothing about politics is pretty rich considering @2:30 in the interview he readily admits there are politicians on both sides of the aisle that talk about topics like immigration, culture etc. that he covers in his new book. IMO he's so abreast of current politics and how lucrative right wing positions and talking points can be that he's cashing in just as droves of other well recognized names have. Props to Dave for holding McGraw's feet to the fire. We'll never know how many times throughout the interview but I'm sure Dr. Phil asked himself, "Why the hell did I agree to this interview? I just wanna sell my damn book."

True, his argument about removing names of infamous Confederates, racists and traitors is insulting. But I sure don't see much evidence here of David "holding his feet to the fire". It's another example of trying to appear collegial while barely pushing back on anything McGraw says. It's weak on rejoinders and counter-argument. The bit about tenured professors being fired or not is a minor point at best and goes on for too long without benefit.

No, Dr. Phil, I cannot believe it.
He's so not political that he spoke at a political rally. Maybe he can gaslight his talk show audience, but that garbage doesn't work here.

Dr. Phil has said publicy on his show, he supports or believes in Trump. He thinks Ttump is a good businessman. He lost all credibilty in my eyes.

That's what bankruptcy is really for - to shield rich people from huge losses when things go badly. So in that regards he is a "good business man". Now if you are talking ethical or does a good job at running the business, that is another matter.
