First off, I DO NOT need to "Google" the term Poke Sallet to learn what it is and how to properly prepare it. I have been eating this plant for close to 50 years and have used it extensively as a medicine for over 30. The actual proper old term you meant to say is actually "Polk Sallet" and is used by virtually no one here in the South other that on rare occasions in some of the hollers where very old dialects are still kept. In the South, we call it "Poke Salad" as in "Picking a mess of Poke".

We also eat the young stalks like Okra WITHOUT boiling them (never do get poisoned either) and some eat the leaves from the adult plant by stripping out the poisonous veins. The old man I studied medicinal and edible plants for 12 years with was born in 1908 and was a mountain man, sharecropper and herbalist. He NEVER used the term "Polk Sallet" in the entire time I knew him and he used many old quaint Southern words like "Eatable" etc..... He called it Poke as did everyone else.

Yes, it includes the seeds. They are somewhat toxic but if you do not chew them, they will simply pass through you. The seeds are the real medicinal part and you are getting a little bit of it each time you use the berries even though you are not chewing them. I just made a poke berry pie the other day and simply filtered out the seeds after the berries were cooked.

We also know that you do not eat it as a salad and that you simply boil it three times and it is ready to go. Everyone who uses it knows that it is poisonous raw and that you quit picking it when it gets around a foot or two and the stems get very red. My directions were plenty clear unless you are more afraid of the plant than is necessary. BTW - know anyone who has died from eating raw Poke leaves? Has happened but is very rare. I clearly say to boil the leaves first.

That is the problem with search engines like Google. I'm sure no one there has ever eaten Poke Salad and they are just continuing the use of an antiquated term for the plant. Many books do the same and this is because they are passing down the same Out The South misinformation. Polk Salad is correct to use still as is "Eatable". Just doesn't mean anyone uses it. BTW - I have written three books on the subject of herbal medicine, speak on it all over the country and know what I am talking about.

Just stumbled across this vid and am glad I did. What many people don't know, I think, is that back in the day, people often steamed lettuce (and such) and served it as wilted lettuce. Perhaps "sallet" refers to that custom. Ya never know. About cutting it back and picking the regrowth ... I've done that but have been careful not to do it more than once or twice, out of the perhaps misguided theory that the roots could only be asked to send up replacement shoots so many times before they gave up on me. But wouldn't I love to keep those greens coming into fall (which happens mighty early in my neck of the woods.) Your thoughts? I do like the idea of making poke berry pie ... cool!

    Greetings,
Thank you for sharing the video. When you speak of the ingesting the berries does that include the seeds?

I have three massive poke weeds, along side my house. I'm interested in learning more. Thanks.

I teach classes on how to identify and use several thousand plants and am intimately familiar with the edible and medicinal uses for Poke. I would suggest you quit relying on Google for your information and get out with the common folk who actually still use these plants on a daily basis.

Emily - Never use Poke in a raw state as they are toxic..... Great plant to use only if used properly.

Did you eat the berry? What did it taste like? Sweet or bitter?

If you pay attention to the video, you will see where I say to eat the leave AFTER changing the water two to three times to remove the toxins. Then it is perfectly fine to eat. The berries are safe to consume with the seeds as jelly, syrup, wine etc... and you can swallow the berries 2-3 every couple or three days for arthritis and as a lymphatic and antiviral. Do NOT (as stated in video) chew the seeds. they will pass whole through you and not be an issue.

The root is the most toxic part of the plant, which is too bad because it is huge.

Toxic does not mean not usable. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory and immunomodulator in drop dosing and one of my favorite. Great medicine but has to be respected.

You said in another video the most poisonous parts are the stem and the seeds. Could you put a few leaves raw in a juicer with some other greens and fruit or maybe as much as a handful?

    • @kristengibson277

He just said it can't be eaten raw,. It's poisonous. The chemical compounds breakdown when cooked properly.
