When I was a kid rides were 15 cents for kids & 25 cents for adults and that small black & white sign was attached to the bridge on the same side as the US Army Corps of Engineers building.
I absolutely love Duluth the surrounding area and up the North Shore. I love camping fall-winter-spring, but not during the mosquito infested warm months. EngerTower, Canal Park, a few different spots on Skyline Parkway, at the very top of seven bridges, at the end Park Point, Spirit Mountain. Gooseberry falls. and I have even searched for Rocky & Bullwinkle up at Frostbite Falls. I love Duluth and the NorthShore, but I'd never live there or buy a piece of land. Tax & Politics keep me away.

How does the bridge operator know how high he has to lift the bridge for different size boats, like sail boats?

rory martin I think there are only two levels; 1/2 way And all the way up for ships. The half way mark is probably high enough for all privet vessels.

rory martin the boat tells the size and the operator lifts it as high as it needs. 3 or 4 levels usually

Did he mention why they stopping giving bridge rides? I was always told, and I don't know if it was local legend or true, that somebody leaned over too far once and was killed by the bridge where it meets the base.

Two people have been killed by the bridge, so they don't allow anyone on it anymore during its movement

A woman on the bridge panicked when it started to go up with her on it and leaned over and was decapitated at the head. True story.

Would be cool if the rides on the bridge could resume but it will likely never happen again because of strict safety and security regulations.
