This is not high quality wood,. It's veneer over particle board. You "death before paint" people need to give it a rest. That piece didn't look that good when it was brand new.

I'm about to do something similar to a simple small desk that's actually solid wood. A young previous owner had scratched/carved their name in the side; hours of painstaking restoration will not yield completely satisfactory results or return enough value to the piece to make it worthwhile. I used to be a purist but a mindful approach reveals that doesn't always make sense. 🤷♀️
