If Soul is what speaks to her soul, who are we to tell her she doesn't have the right to express what is in her heart? If she is a culture vulture, she devours it well then. She connects with soul and R&B and regardless of the opinions of "some" people, she has EVERY RIGHT to honor that. She isn't putting on or doing black-speak when interviewing. She isn't Iggy doing vocal blackface, either. She is authentic in what she loves, has a beautiful, soulful voice and I look forward to seeing more of her. Periodt.

I think people who insist on calling everyone a "culture vulture" are jealous of the effort a non-black artist like Nao puts into their craft. It's selfishness and entitlement wrapped into one; maybe even confusion at the fact that someone actually admirers 'our' culture, meaning that their intentions must be malicious. It's an ugly attitude to have in this day and age.

Dang, Yoshioka-San, if you are listening, you are from Oosaka! I have spent some years living in Kansai, and found the variety of Japanese spoken there to be one of the most soulful sounds I had ever heard. I remember eavesdropping on pairs of people in crowded stations to get a taste of the dripping contours and rhythmic interaction of speaker and listener. Have you ever collaborated with a poet from your old home?

Yes, her voice and the way she sings sounds really great. Still, just personally something is missing, which would be “depth” of it. Not just she alone, Japanese voice is to too clear and less overtones to listen to. I’d like to feel some more noise in it, that’s what I mean.

Uh. Maybe you are missing 'depth'. What a cheesy comment.
