In the head-to-head, the Tama, Canopus and British Archer were the best to me. The Archer is a visually beautiful drum. It seems like everything British Drums Company makes is. The head-to head parts of these videos are the best. Another great video from DCP.
One thing I noticed on the soft cedar was the fundamental note is less noticeable with more overtone volume and less volume in general. The dense Purple Heart has more volume, and fundamental note. Cedar is one of the softest woods I’ve worked with, you can poke it with your finger nail and your nail will dig all the way into it so easily like balsa wood. Do it to Hickory and it won’t even leave a scratch no matter how hard you try. The soft wood acts as a vibrational dampener, absorbing the energy from the heads moving. I’m not hating on it though, all the snares have their time and place.
What Tama is doing here is introducing the Japanese cedar as a "premium" wood when it's just a normal, plentiful soft wood. It allows them to use it on their lower end drums, but show to buyers that they think of it as a higher end wood by making a $1300 snare out of it. I doubt anyone buys that Tama snare especially at that price. It sounds pretty good on the recording, but it's really hard to tell if it really holds up against a hardwood kit. I have my doubts about it, though, it does look really nice.
Another great video of some amazing instruments! Just a quick note to say that along with the quality production values you folks always bring to the table while making these awesome videos, I really love that you include some humor(!) in them too!! Let's go smell some snare drums! :)
I had a purpleheart DW and I traded it for a 10+6 maple. I could not get it tuned correctly no matter what I did. Don't know if it was out of round or what but the 10+6 blew it out of the water. Dunnett sounded amazing to my ear! Thanks guys
While they all sound great, the Purple Heart kick and floor tom are the star of the show. To split the difference of those hating or accepting the piano black finish hiding the Purple Hearts' looks, how about a fat stripe in the piano black that shows off that purple goodness!
Holy Robin Hood, Batman.... that Archer snare looks and sounds amazing...I especially liked it with the room mics. They all, of course, shound great but my choice would be the drum from Sherwood Forest.
They all sound great, but for me it's very close between the Dunnett Milkwood, the British Drum Company Archer, and the Pearl Stavecraft. I tend to prefer shallow snare drums tuned on the higher side. Thanks for another great video! Now I know some other drums to check out on my next visit!
I thought they all sounded great, but the Archer from BDC, and the DW purple heart were my choices, as my ears heard them today. Visually, I think DW should not have covered the shell with black laquer, or at least, had accents of that beautiful purple heart wood showing. Anyway, great video guys, love the head to heads, the humour, Adams presentation and Tonys playing. Look forward to your next instalment.
it might be high tuning which I love, but man this Dunnett Milkwood has a beautiful tone, response and look as well. Totally in love with this one. Unfortunately my bank account isn't so much in love with buying new gear :D
All great snares. Now about the Hi-Hats, What did you mean "If used properly" they sound great ? What if they aren't used "Properly" ? Think I'll just stick with Zil New Beats, haven't used them "properly" in 30 yrs and still sound great ! Lol 🤣
That Archer snare sounded awesome, but that Purpleheart really blew me away! The whole kit sounded great, and the snare itself was incredible. Yet another DCP banger 🤘🏼
Canopus, TAMA and Pearl would be my picks. The more interesting ones. Although they were all nice. The Dunnette is an interesting one as well. The price tags can help clarify the level of interest in these drums
Love that Purpleheart DW snare, looks great and sounds even better as far as I'm concerned! Has a really nice articulation of a metal snare drum, but retains that warmness associated with wood shells. Per usual, all the snares featured are well worth anyone's time and money, so it's all a matter of taste at the end of the day.
That Tama sounds as a good as my steel Ludwig super something or another. It was a unicorn, that thing sounded terrific. I like them all, 10 of each please...
Literally came from the BDC shootout with the Archer Yew shell. Saw the thumbnail & needed to check this out. Also is that snare, screen right @14:00 a stanbridge snare?
I remember thinking a while back, what would a cedar drum sound like? And now I know. Just hope it’s durable :/ But between that from Tama, and the Archer from Brit Co, you guys really nailed a whole lot of exotic sounds.
You would not really know what a cedar drum sounded like unless they did a head to head of exactly the same drums with differant shells, I would think most of the sound differance you hear is the differant heads, lugs/hoops and snare wires more than the wood. I bet the bearing edges makes more sound difference than the actual wood. But music cmpanies love selling expensive products on "exotic" wood.
Pearl sounded choked like all thicker shells do. I like how the video ends with “financing available” since these snares are the same price as a decent drum set. In the head 2 head portion, they all pretty much sound the same. IMO, these boutique snares are more about looks and bling.
Great review als always...i'm kinda lookin for a wood snare drum that doesn't have a lot of crack and is not like in your face and violently loud. In small clubs the snare (and cymbals) are always the problem and bleeding into the singers mic. Any recomandations for a snare drum like that...or at least a wood type? Would be nice...
I am still favoring the Noble and Cooley Walnut from Staff Picks a couple videos ago. I've listened to a lot of these comparison vids. I really don't think it makes much difference how much you pay or what wood you get etc. Pretty much any snare can get you by if used right. That's all the other instruments too. Tone=Inspiration, If it works for you then that's all that matters. Nevertheless, keep making the vids, I'll keep watching, appreciate ya.
Beautiful snares!! Not sure about the rim mic technique. Kind of wierd sounding. Pobably with a sm57 or another dynamic. Don't know, but all sounded different from other videos. Please make a PDP concept snares comparasion 🙏
Dave Mattacks!!!! Great video, as usual! I think the Dunnett and the TAMA are a great discovery. I'm not a fan of soft woods, but... THANK YOU! P.S. your playing keeps getting better!!
I have one of the pearl stave(Japanese Oak 14x6 5) absolute cannon; basically a hybrid 13x6.5 due to the thick shell, but and absolute velocit-cannon, if I can make up a word....😂
I’m 40. And I still think a snare sounds like a snare. I have 22 snares in my collection. And there’s no huge difference to me in how they sound. 😂 stainless, aluminum, maple, mahogany, birch, vintage, new,,,,, so many different sizes. They all sound similar. Not the same. But tuning is the main difference. And either some metal or wood. I’m probably gonna get crucified here for this. But. That’s my opinion
All very nice drums,if i could only have one it would be the BDC.ive owned my fair share of drums from various companies over the years and i think what BDC is doing is something special.these people are putting out quality at a whole different level as far as im concerned.
I like the Star solid cedar followed by the Dunnett (milkwood, who'da thunk?). I just don't love stave drums and the Pearl unfortunately did not change my mind. And I find the purple heart to be too metallic (you pointed that out). If I want metal, I'd play metal. If I want woody I want it to be woody.... BDC is right in the middle of the pack. Great video. What really sounds GREAT besides Tony's playing is that effing bass drum.. DAYUM
No one does drum reviews and head 2 head like DCP!
Thanks so much!
In the head-to-head, the Tama, Canopus and British Archer were the best to me. The Archer is a visually beautiful drum. It seems like everything British Drums Company makes is. The head-to head parts of these videos are the best. Another great video from DCP.
Thanks as always Dan!
I’ve still yet to hear a BDC drum that I didn’t love.
The winner of this test is definitely the.....
Bass Drum!!!
“If I were a rich man”
Etc. the Yew, Milkwood, Canopus Wenge, all delicious sounding!
“HE NEED SOME MILK”
Perfect timing of the meme 😂
The only thing I got from this video is that you guys tune the hell out of snare drums and make any of them sound amazing.
Very kind of you!
That purpleheart was BEAUTIFUL! It was punchy but also bright sounding, absolute dream sound
Wow! That Canopus snare kicks ass! Beautiful looking, beautiful sound.
One thing I noticed on the soft cedar was the fundamental note is less noticeable with more overtone volume and less volume in general.
The dense Purple Heart has more volume, and fundamental note.

Canopus for the win, in this video

I'm taking Canopus for sound/value (the cheapest at $899), their brass lug, snare bed and snare wire = great snare
Another great video of some amazing instruments! Just a quick note to say that along with the quality production values you folks always bring to the table while making these awesome videos, I really love that you include some humor(!) in them too!! Let's go smell some snare drums! :)
Really enjoyed the softer woods, especially that Dunnett Milkwood love love lov
I had a purpleheart DW and I traded it for a 10+6 maple. I could not get it tuned correctly no matter what I did. Don't know if it was out of round or what but the 10+6 blew it out of the water. Dunnett sounded amazing to my ear! Thanks guys
IMHO, that DW would have to be my fave, followed closely by the BDC, then the Pearl then Tama. Phenomenal sounding snares
Love the ring of the Japanese cedar. Clear, stable, and not at all what I was expecting.
Ridiculously good sounding snare drums. I'm having a very hard time picking a favorite. Top notch comparison video ofc, but that's a given by now.
I really like the Bassdrum sound when directly miked.
My favourite snare of those would be the Tama.
Archer vs Cedar-can't decide. Everything was played and recorded beautifully as always!
They all sound great. To my ears the Tama and DW kickdrum sounded awesome together. They really complemented each other.
Love that Archer. Great tone to my ear. Wet/Fat with a Ludwig type overtone.
They all sound great, but for me it's very close between the Dunnett Milkwood, the British Drum Company Archer, and the Pearl Stavecraft. I tend to prefer shallow snare drums tuned on the higher side. Thanks for another great video! Now I know some other drums to check out on my next visit!

British Drum Co snare is the Belle of the ball. ✨💫
The snares are amazing, tasty, everything I hoped for... but can we talk about those beautiful 17" hi hats a second? YUM.
Right? Those were super fun too!
it might be high tuning which I love, but man this Dunnett Milkwood has a beautiful tone, response and look as well. Totally in love with this one. Unfortunately my bank account isn't so much in love with buying new gear :D
Canopus never disappoints!

That Archer snare sounded awesome, but that Purpleheart really blew me away! The whole kit sounded great, and the snare itself was incredible. Yet another DCP banger 🤘🏼
Glad you liked it!
The looks of the Pearl but the sound of the Archer and the Purple Heart 😊
LMAO that "the more you know" sting
😉
Canopus, TAMA and Pearl would be my picks. The more interesting ones. Although they were all nice. The Dunnette is an interesting one as well. The price tags can help clarify the level of interest in these drums
I’m a simple man. I see a DCP demo video, I hit the like button like it owes me money.
I have a single ply buckeye. Sounds very much like an old radio king. That’s what Ian Witt who made it attempts to create.
Love that Purpleheart DW snare, looks great and sounds even better as far as I'm concerned! Has a really nice articulation of a metal snare drum, but retains that warmness associated with wood shells. Awesome and yes sir!
Thank you thank you thank you love everything you guys do
Can you make a video showcasing the drum sets in the drum museum on the upper floor?
All of them are just great 😃👍
DAVE MATTACKS in the shop?!! MISTER snare drum drops by as you're demo'ing snares?! Hah! 😅
Yup! haha!
They let him right up to the third floor studio!
I remember thinking a while back, what would a cedar drum sound like? And now I know. Just hope it’s durable :/

The Canopus and the Tama Star for me please!
The Archer sure got in my ears!
Love that British drum. Milk wood....who would have thought?
the biggest AND best in the world!
Thank you! ❤️

The Dunnett did it for me, but the Tama drum was a runner up. All good though!
I like so much DW really just

There were some changes to the room (the part you can't see in the video) and I am getting use to it. Still using the same Earthworks QTC30s.
Dave Mattacks!!!! Great video, as usual! I think the Dunnett and the TAMA are a great discovery. I'm not a fan of soft woods, but... THANK YOU! P.S. your playing keeps getting better!!
The man, the legend! Great choices and thanks so much!
Big fan of 14 by 6.5 snares because they bring the extra mustard🥳
I need DW really just
I like the Ludwig.
The Stavecraft was better than i expected
The TAMA and DW do it best for me but they all are fabulous sounding - WOW!
Archer for the win!
Dunnett comes in 2nd
I like the way the dw snare drum sounds the most
I liked them all but the Pearl.
Canopus for the win!
Awesome!
Canopus and Tama.

Many factors, but and subtle differences. But they all FEEL different too, super important.
All very nice drums,if i could only have one it would be the BDC.ive owned my fair share of drums from various companies over the years and i think what BDC is doing is something special.these people are putting out quality at a whole different level as far as im concerned.
Canopus for me.
The Dunnett is my favorite.
Pearl sounds the beest
Really DW is the best drums on the world infact
Is the dw purpleheart snare for sale
drumcenternh.com/products/dw-collectors-purpleheart-snare-drum-14x6-5-exotic-tiger-wood-w-black-nickel-hardware
I like the Star solid cedar followed by the Dunnett (milkwood, who'da thunk?). I just don't love stave drums and the Pearl unfortunately did not change my mind. ❤❤❤❤
BDC Archer and the Tama are my favourites.
Santa Claus the Solid Tama Cedar or the Pearl Stavecraft please. 🤣
Looks whats cooking or smelling!
Tama and the BDC do it for me 🤘🏻🥁🤘🏻
DUNETT,BRITISH ,DW AND TAMA
I have the Purple Heart definitely sounds like a metal snare and powerful but beautiful lol. Would love to have a whole Purple Heart kit but 💰💰💰💰💰💰💰
CANOPUS!!
I never understood why DW uses such heavy bolts and nuts to mount their badges. Seems like some small screws would be more along the lines.
Tama
Please (if you haven't) do a full review of this DW kit. I've NEVER heard a kit with so much bottom end and attack. 👍👍
The BDC Archer is probably my current dream snare to own. Alas the money not spared making it, is reflected in the price of it 😭😭😭.
Purpleheart!
BDC all the way
milkwood and cedar.
Solid cedar
1. Canopus
Purely based on sound I thought the Pearl Stave stood out for me. The DW was nice also.
What's Soulja Boy's favorite snare wood?
YEW!!
😜
That Tama, hnnnnnnnnggggg
TAMA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Canopus wins
The more you know 😂
