RESPECT to the Waffle House!!! WH is the best at what they do, which is BEING THERE. We are from Wrightsville Beach, NC… Jokingly, Jim Cantore’s second home. When your entire metro area (Wilmington) is an island due to flooding, no electricity anywhere, we are out of fuel so we cant boil water to purify, you see the National Guard and Coast Guard pulling bodies out the sand… for WEEKS… your 2 choices for a hot meal are 1) the Salvation Army, and 2) Waffle House. Tough and dedicated bunch. Natural disasters, in-store riots… NO MATTER! WH is a bunch of basasses that cook up a mean breakfast. Some of the best hot meals Ive ever had, PROPS!

Do not live anywhere near a body of water that has tidal influences.
Trees are lovely. Don't have any, anywhere near your home. Appreciate what your neighbors have.
Live in or on the highest elevation. Meaning do not live in low lying flood prone areas.
The beach is great place to visit. Just don't live anywhere near there.

I am in Alabama and have been watching a large prepositioning of utility repair trucks. This part of country had a rather dry summer, so Nature is giving us a catch up blast of rainfall plus winds to knock down trees weakened by the mild drought.

Regarding Japanese and EU infrastructure, it's always apples v oranges. If you combine Japanese population density with American wealth, you get excellent infrastructure. However, European Russia population density combined with the expanse of America means no one is willing to pay for concrete poles, undergrounding of utility lines, tight webs of passenger rail, and other such Japanese luxuries. Some of it makes sense and is done in the Boston Washington DC Corridor, but it isn't economically feasible in the Midwest, desert Southwest, Deep South, Texas, and so on. The myriad small towns and cities in these less population dense parts of America can have cheap, reliable, and plentiful utilities - but they must choose two of those three options.
Call up your Republican senators and congressional leaders. If we want higher quality infrastructure, we have to raise taxes. Republicans do not want any taxes. This is why the Southern US is so poor, because public infrastructure, healthcare, and education are terrible. Democrats initially wanted spending for reinforced electrical infrastructure in the IIJA when it was in committee, trying to get it past on to a vote on the floor. Republicans blocked it by saying it was too expensive. So instead, Democrats went with the barebones infrastructure package that intends to give red states vastly more funding than blue states for new bridges and internet, because frankly Republican strongholds have infrastructure that are falling apart. They receive disproportionate amounts of federal funding compared to places like Calibronia and New York.
Moral of my response: If you want nice things, half the country has to get over their fear of taxing billionaires and centimillionaires, so that we can finally have the ability to fight a certain future of catastrophic storms and natural disasters.

FEMA does not gauge things by the status of Waffle House. Although waffle House is usually open 24 hours FEMA employees usually don't even eat there because they don't carry cash. FEMA goes into even the most dangerous neighborhoods to assess damage where robbery is a real issue. FEMA employees are not issued cash for expenses. They have a credit card. Waffle House only takes cash.
How do I know this? I'm the veteran several hurricanes including: Charlie, Frances, Jeanne, Ivan, Dennis, Katrina, Rita, Wilma and Irene.

I've always argued with climate deniers, going back to the 1990's , to follow the lead of the insurance industry ie. ppl who have money on the line. If u want to know your true state of health, go and get life insurance, they will not be afraid to tell you where u stand and how much it will cost. Same with the environment, try to get insurance, and they will be real upfront about how dangerous the climate has become and where they see it going ... And it's not good.
