@@3smoke During the Great Depression, little credit was extended - that's true - but that was largely in response to stock market crash/ bank failures, due to huge amounts of (eventually unpaid/ defaulted) credit which was extended in late 1920s. Lots of credit was given then, via loans/ installment payments/ "margin buying", which led many to speculate in the stock market/ buy furniture/ houses, etc - with very little down. Contributed to "house of cards".

In 2008 it happened again and nobody ever thought they were going to own homes again and the end of the country was coming. Recessions come and go. it's how it's always been. Just make good choices though it, like you should have saved money, not takin out big auto loans, and running up credit card debt. And don't tell me people can't afford food. Americans own and buy so much shit compared to any other society, they can do without most it. And they eat too much to begin with so lessen the calories.

I have zero CC debt, 820 Credit score… but I don’t own a home. I don’t have a car payment, my car is 14 years old, hoping to keep it going. For now , I’m concentrating my daughter’s full tuition bill to avoid her having loans when she graduates in two years. I plan to help her also pay down the federal loans. I want her to have a clean slate when she graduates. I’m 52 now, I hope I can heavily invest when she is done with school and have a shot at living a simple life at retirement. I can only hope….

I don’t think so. People are holding on to their homes because rent is more expensive. Maybe if student debt is really bad that the government starts garnishing wages. But that’s about it.

It's the lower socioeconomic classes that are taking the pain. Mortgages are healthy (richer) and CC are higher (poorer). Auto loans somewhere in btwn.
When something breaks it's gonna come from problems with those in the lower socioeconomic classes.

    • @deadcell1

It'll effect all classes.. The economy is linked.. If people can't afford your products and services due to stagnant wages and inflation it'll effect the bottom line.

It's because modern banking and lending have given lending steroids, so much that it needs more and more subscribers to stay afloat, and can't just rely on good borrowers to cover losses, because there aren't enough good borrowers after everything requiring some form of debt, to prove you are trustworthy.
