  • This is my 2nd video in the series I'm doing over everything to do with frog fishing. I talk about some of the improvements we've done to the Popping Perch, some modifications do's and dont's, how to put together the perfect setup for frog fishing. I also show how the popping perch can work in the water with the new improvement we've made, you don' want to miss this one.

    The first video was 🔥🔥🔥🔥 this one will be a force to be reckoned with. Dropping nukes man dropping 💥💥💥. People watching listen to this best info on frog fishing. Been frogging for 9 years the last video the 3 things he mentions is all true. It's taken me years to have the confidence I have with a frog last summer I dedicated to frogging everyday went out and that's all I threw besides a 1 ,2 punch lure stick bait to throw if a bass missed my frog some days I was averaging 8 bass caught out of 10. I know this is long but once you get confidence with a frog a whole new door opens.Sorry for this being long like a sailors note saying goodbye. Todd you do an awesome job explaining things. Tightlines brotha.

    So glad someone on youtube finally addressed this hook bending bs. I suck at frog fishing but I've always been sceptical about that. Not to mention the fact that more often than not you only get em with one hook, and with frog gear your just begging to straighten that already bent hook out.

    Agreed on the "realistic color" bit. Usually, I can't see how it made any difference as to color because with most frogs/fish imitators (shoot, topwaters in general), the bottom side of the bait that faced the bass were all one damn color anyway. Glad to see this innovation.
    Normally, I absolutely hate click-bait style titles, but in this case dawg, you need to go back and re-title/add something like "When killer bees attack", or something. That was comedy gold. Especially with the splash at the end. IF the click bait style tag lines REALLY work (and, apparently most/many TH-camrs at least THINK they do, as so many add them. Even Mikey Ballz has gotten on that band wagon, sad to say, but I digress), I haven't seen any fishing video on TH-cam that it would be more appropriate for than this one. Hillarious and great B-roll. homie.
    As to the eternal "hook bending" debate, I think you made an excellent demonstration of why it is probably a bad idea to bend your hooks "UP", as shown in your illustration. Very convincing. My question would be, what about bending them "OUT" as in AWAY from the body of the frog, without bending them "UP"? It would SEEM to me that might have advantages as you get some separation (a few millimetres) from the barb and the body of the frog WITHOUT changing the plane of the bend between the shank and the barb. Also, what are your thoughts on the thickness/thinness of the plastic on the frog. The reason I bring it up is two fold. One, you mention about the overall compressibility of the frog and I would think the thicker it is, the less easy it is to compress. On the other hand, I realize there would be a point of diminishing returns if it got too thin. An example of this would be like on the Megabass Big Gabot Frog. It is TOO thin because you can't catch more than a few (or get a bad hang up) on it without the plastic tearing, which sucks because they're expensive. Two, I saw a video of Jacob Wheelers. The intent of Wheeler's video wasn't about frogs, intentionally. He just happened to be in a tackle store looking at another bait when he saw some frogs and started taking them out of the packages. He said he always does that to check to see if the plastic is thin enough and he also said that the density/"compressibility" of frogs even varies from the same manufacture, not just between different companies. What would be your thoughts on all of this?
    Again, another excellent installment of the series. Look forward to the next one. I really hope you continue this format with other baits/tackle/supplies/etc because its the best format I've seen out there.

      In depth comment BIG C I like it. I don't really ever touch my frogs we built them that way so you'd never have to alter them. It's why we built over 10 prototypes until we got it right. We fish that frog in too many situations where I want it weedless. I wanted a frog that matched the hooks and if not we should have designed it different. We checked how soft they were and how thick the walls were, I think we hit every spot, its why they brought me on for that project. I'm with Wheeler you can usually tell right off the bat just by looks if the frog was built with those details in mind. The action is where its hard to see unless you throw it. After that it might take a year to see the durability of one. I'll let you in on "our" thoughts, guys around me and how we view baits and durability of baits. We understand that certain baits are gonna tear up. I've seen guys that complain about a crankbait catching over 100 fish and mad at the paint job or this or that. If a bait is "GOOD" and catches fish better than others in my job I want it and don't care how long they last. If a frog catches 15 fish and tears up but catches them better than everything else I'm buying it. 15 fish on average with some GIANTS and you win a tournament what's 8 dollars in the scheme of things. I know not everyone thinks like that but we do.

    @kevingrace5295 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with you on bending the hooks up or out. If you have to bring the hooks up or out on your frog then it's a poor design. I live in South Florida when the water's low certain times of the year and the Glades 30lb stringers are common in our weekend tournaments and local opens. I've weighed several 25 lb plus stringers and never had to bend the hooks out on my frogs, I've snapped a few frog rods though. When a 7-pound plus hits you at the very end of a long cast it happens. Most Lewis reels are 20lb drag or better and I have them all lockdown. I don't want them to have a chance,I can always get another rod. Todd I really like this series I like what you and Hallman are doing and Upshaw too keep up the good work guys I appreciate all of you.

    Good stuff Todd, bending hooks weaken them, they also get tangled up in stems, slop, scum easier. When I was a younger man. my profession was glassblower. First guy bass fishing to have sst balls in glass tubes, stuffed in worms. I did just a little butt kicking with that. Rick Clunn and his brother Randy Fite, used them for a couple years before anyone else started making them. Now I put them in frogs, that little subtle noise will get me a few extras a day. Can you put a glass rattle in the Strike King frog, up his drain hole? Do they have a rattle built in?

    Great video on another brand of frog to try out. However I would like someone in any of these videos tell me why a baitcaster combo is better then spinner combo or vice versa.

    • @toddcastledinefishing5924
      @toddcastledinefishing5924  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its all about the rod, there is not a spinning rod out there made that is designed to be strong enough to set the hook. The spinning rods that are designed to fight giant fish are built for fighting the fish and the reel is designed for drag, the strength is all in the middle not in the tip. Frog rods with a bait caster are designed to set the hook when they eat and have no drag, almost the exact opposite of a spinning rod. Spinning rods are designed for drag and bait casters used for frog fishing aren't they have a good anti reverse to stop drag. Most spinning rods (offshore fishing) so we are talking about heavy spinning rods usually the fish are so big they set the hook when they run, bass you have to use all your power and none of the fish to set the hook. Thats the difference.

    • @chrisbelloli637

If air comes out then it has to let it come back in, I'm sure it was just that one and you could probably just remove the small object blocking it.

    I don't bend them up, I bend them out just a tad. Yes, I also will not buy a frog if the hooks are pointing up Scum, Tekel and Reactions to name a few... I agree set the hook as hard as you can.. No wonder my popping perch sinks, I have Rev 0 with the hole on top.

    What color poppin perch do you recommend for this time of year? For Texas reservoirs in shallow pads for late summer early fall

      The water is usually clearer now so natural is better, any of the perch colors because thats the only reason they are up there, that and big gizzards. Pad fishing you can't go wrong with white or black. If you watch my next video about pads you'll understand why.

    I have the Cara T7 Amistad and the tip is not right for frog placement... can't get an accurate at all. I use it for spinnerbaits at this point. Question for you. Is the New Cara XH tip softer for more precise placement ?

      To each his own I’ve been using the cara “swimbait” rod which is now the cara 7’3 XH for over 7 years frog fishing it’s all I throw. I’m with Lews now and I’m working with them to build a rod more like it if that tells you how much I like it.Not sure how you skip a frog but it’s perfect for me.

      @@toddcastledinefishing5924 I've always used Barracks rod, but that's a thing of the past now... just wondering if the tip on the Amistad XH is softer then the regular Amistad... Thanks

      Softer than the amistad no. I don’t like a soft tip and the old cara amistad has to soft a tip for me. Try to get your hands on the xh and check it out

    Bought me a couple PP. I see why you don't bend the hooks. They lay in the proper position. Body is nice and soft, collapses easily.

      Its one of those rods that does everything great I talk about it constantly. Sometimes you find a rod that loads perfect and thats it.

    Noooooo!! You never cut the tail on the popping perch!! I thought it was designed to keep the profile!! And Hallman said your rod is too stiff. Haha! JK if you didn't watch his most recent video yet.

    Well if you bend a hook that far on a frog is wrong. You supposed to just bend the hook JUST enough to change the trajectory upwards just enough where the bite is coming down on you hook point. 🎣👊🏿

    • @toddcastledinefishing5924
      @toddcastledinefishing5924  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea but why, why would a frog be so different than every other bait. Why don't you have to bend the hook out on anything else just the frog, every other hook that is designed that way is fine. I believe that the hook is fine, I've never had an issue ever with hooking fish and I believe that the setup for most is wrong. I'm not compromising one thing to make another right. I'll change the one problem that way I don't create another.

      Maybe it's a confidence thing in frog fishing we get from certain pros as tips. So you are a pro and now I gotta take that into consideration if I lose a Big one and my hook comes back straighten out.🤷Keep the🎣tips coming TC.👊🏿
