Hey guys in this video I check out the new offering from Donner, a Strat style guitar with a coil split in the bridge humbucking pickup. Let me know what you guys think. I think with a new set of strings and a minor setup, if any this thing is totally gigable. I put it up a against my MIM strat in the video. These Donner guitars keep getting better. I was surprised.

Hi Rich after watching your video, I just got a blue DS-152 package. I have built a few guitars from scratch myself and I understand build quality and what goes into it. I was amazed by the overall build at around $140 AUD brand new and it comes with a little rechargeable amp! For $140AUD, I can't even buy all the wood I need to build a guitar! Then there is the hardware, electronics, all the manual labour and that amazing paintwork! The metallic blue is so nice and has a really nice depth.
I have no idea how Donner is going to make any profit or stay in business if they keep practically giving away these for the price of an average sneaker.

I have the Donner DST-200 in black with a dark "Perilla" fretboard, it looks very close to Ebony.
The frets are medium jumbo and the back of the neck is a smooth satin finish.
For their price they are great guitars, i have upgraded the cheap feeling tuners to locking vintage ones
and is now far easier to change and tune up new strings.
Compared to my MIM and USA Strats, it holds up well, with only a slight lack of mid range which could
be improved by upgrading the pickups.
For the price you pay, and for a beginner once setup they are highly recommended.
Thanks for your excellent review, i have subscribed to your channel.🙂👍

I've done TH-cam reviews on all three DST guitars from Donner, as well as a post-setup playthrough loaded up with my favorite strings (Super Slinky Cobalts). The 152 and 400 are in my regular gig and recording rotation (the 100 still has some "beginner guitar" hiccups, but I'm working those out), even using just the stock hardware. I can't figure out how they got these instruments at the sub-$250 price point, unless the name of the game is to flood them out and then bump up the prices once they become more standard, because these are phenomenal instruments in that range.

I plan on purchasing the DST 152. This will be my 4th Donner, and I must admit that they all are excellent guitars. Even my good friend, who is a guitar player and teacher for many years, finds the quality much better than one would expect. IMO, a high price tag doesn’t always mean quality.

We've done a review of this guitar, and I really enjoyed listening to Dan play it. It was kind of weird that it sounded like a whole other instrument (I can't recall what). Great job as always Rich, I noticed you used Elevated Jam Tracks. Dan loves their stuff 😉👍!
I went back and checked, and it sounds like the fiddle from Black Water by the Doobie Brothers.

Great review.. And most of all thanks for playing clean sounds. A lot of younger reviewers (I'm 73 ) don't think a guitar sounds good unless it sounds like a chain saw, I just ordered the Donner DST200. Do I need it .? No. I got 3 other guitars. But,! Amazon had it for $179 with a $70 off coupon. $109. and it was screaming BUY ME. Hope I get a good one cause buying online can be a hit or miss. Stay safe my friend

It just came a couple of hours ago and there's NOTHING to adjust or mod!!! I just stretched and tuned the strings then played for an hour and a half with no tuning issues whatsoever. Frets are fabulous. Neck is fabulous. I'll never use tremelo. I'm kinda in shock at everything being ready to go. String height is fine. That part shocked me.
Thanks again for doing this vid

The 'vintage' style used by Donner are pretty good, but I've now fitted a better make of locking tuners for ease of stringing. It really is a great guitar for the money.

I built a Strat from cheap parts this days. I found a loaded Pickguard with really original looking Single coils and good Switch for 29€ and a neck for same price. I change the saddles to brass ones - and that was it. But how great is the influence of the modeling ? The real Strat has a longer staying fuller tone, this was something I notice and will be better for the donner to change the saddles, too.

The amazing thing is if you jump between frame number 7:43 with the neck pickup on the Donner, and frame 13:48 on the Fender neck pickup with Texas Specials, they both sound EXACTLY the same. That is saying something when it comes to Texas Specials, the Stevie Ray Vaughn favorite.

Fender(and the others) must be surely getting worried about the quality of these guitars.. in the UK that Donner is £179.. and I've seen it in videos outclass a £2,000 Strat. A bit of modding and you could have a real beast. Really is food for thought, and great news for kids wanting to get into guitar. You really can't go wrong at that price.. Amazing.

I honestly don’t know the make it for that price! I bought a squire strat because I loved the way it played! The trem was so cheap it wouldn’t stay in tune, at all! Long story short I turned it in to the nicest guitar I own. The Floyd, the Seymour’s, the pickgaurds $580, plus I did about a $200 neck dressing. I wanrted all the hardware black and gold, satin not gloss. I got a Floyd rose special black and gold, replace he block with solid brass and the bridges with chrome with German made saddles. This one sharp instrument!

I prefer the pickups on the Donner!
The bridge was much smoother and Hendrix-ey, the middle was punchy but smooth.
Those texas singles on yours sounded too bright, to plucky for me especially the bridge.
Of course the Donner might have crap strings on it which give less highs, so that might account for some of the smoothness

I've had 3 different Strats with the Texas Specials, and they're good sounding pickups. However, being overwound, they don't sound like a vintage styles Strat pickup, which to my ears, the Donner comes closer to. I'm curious as to whether the Donners are ceramic or alnico. Also, I'd be curious as to the neck specs like thickness at the first and twelth frets, and just how round or thin the neck feels. THANK YOU for not playing a 20 minute video of LOUD, DISTORTED BULLSHIT. The gain stuff was very well done, as was the clean. I LOVE cheap guitars despite a collection of Vintage Gibson, Fender, and Hagstrom guitars. Great job on the video.

Great review as always, Rich. Killer demo with backing track as well-some might be flashier, but you just play solid, tuneful, catchy, meaty blues. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the Donner after you’d replaced the strings and done a basic setup. I’m a big fan of cheap guitars that are set up well, to the point where I’ll usually grab my $230 (Aussie dollars!) Artist S-type guitar rather than the ‘85 MIJ Fender Strat. Both have nice pickups, comfy C-shaped necks and immaculate fret ends (came stock on the Strat and took an hour or so on the cheap Artist guitar), but the basswood body of the ‘value’ guitar is lighter and more resonant than the Alder body of the Fender. I just LOVE a nice value Gee-tar! Thanks again and keep up the awesome content.

Definitely get a lot of 'bang for your buck' with these newer guitars. I recently , in the past two years, bought a couple of Firefly LPs that I modded with new , better quality parts, and they're really nice! I usually play Epiphone LPs, and do the same. Thanks for a great, genuine review... I have watched many 'reviews' of the budget guitars and it is obvious the cheap one is going to be SO much worse than the 'real thing' just by little snipes and rolling of the eyes during the review ... with the obvious conclusion you should really pay the extra $1,600 for the real deal instead of this 'bin filler' junk cheap thing haha I like your genuine review, as well as the fact you could probably make a cigar box guitar wail like a champ and sound awesome. The look on your face was priceless, when you realised it was actually quite ok. I am 60yo and only beginning my guitar journey... I have the Donner Bass, an Alpha, Karrera and Ibanez 6 string (Strat style) ... the Donner Bass seems like the best (or at least equal to) the others... but the Donner came packaged best (equal with the Alpha) ... in a bag, in 2 boxes... so, as a beginner, I think Donner is pretty good.
What got me into guitars was a friend makes kit guitars... I found that these budget guitars are far cheaper than kits (here in Australia) ... I bought the Karrera for $AU92 ... a kit of the similar design (Haze?) would be $AU250 and you have to oil or paint it and then put it together... So having short arms and deep pockets, I chose to buy the assembled units haha My friend who does the kits doesn't play... I wasn't going to either... but am up for a challenge. What strings do you think would be good replacements? I have Super Slinky and regular slinky and for the Bass Regular Slinky (Bass 50-105)
New subscriber here... cheers (sorry for the long dribble) haha

@@RichBischoff I researched and found Ernie Ball not a bad word about them... everyone loves them... and 3 packs are relatively cheap ($AU21 - 24) and I decided to get 9's and 10's so I will find out haha. The bass regulars were twice the price for a two pack ($AU59.99) Yikes... they better make me play good! haha. Oh, I forgot... the actual true beginning of my guitar journey was.. my friend building his kits... then, a friend who wrecks cars 9scrap metal) ... had a guitar in a car he picked up... it was/is a 1967 Guyatone semi hollow body... complete with tarnished metalwork, rusty springs... dirty... but nice woodwork (sunburst/tortoishell pick guard) ... he put it on top of the roof of the car and left it... the next day I saw it there and asked... he handed it to me and said "go for it Elvis" ... to which I said "Thankyouverymuch" ... so, I have rescued it,,, new tuners, D'addario 10/56 strings ... and my addiction snowballed from there

    Guitar is such a cool
Market and capitalism rules, you can get guitars super cheap now that are relatively good. No way you could do that in the 90s. We all had hand me down knockoff and the worst squiers ever created

So what are the costs of the 2 guitars... ? That is what matters to most fellows who can barely play a guitar...

Here's what's cool, I put a link in the description of video. It show price and specs. The Fender model in this vid they don't make any more, but I'm sure you can find em used on reverb.com or ebay.

the donner LP copy was my first electric but i just had to have a original strat. (one of my retirement presents to myself ) i just wouldnt have been happy .sad i know

Do you think a strat pick guard will fit this exactly?

  • @stuckinchaselandia6427
    @stuckinchaselandia6427 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Must be me, but I don't think there is any comparison. The Strat had a much more balanced sound and not ice-picky like the Donner.

I think that if you put the original pickups in the fender that the Donner would eat it alive

It’s pretty funny how buying a guitar just to mess around on is cheaper than going out for the night in 2023… everytime I get a bar tab 3 guitars from my Amazon joke list flashes before my eyes…

    Great playing as usual Rich!
The MIM sounds fatter. I bet those Donner guitars are hit and miss; you probably got a good one. I mean for $200 that’s nice 👍

I am surprised and disappointed you didn't have the same strings on the Donner, your whole comparison is negated, rubbish. I'm sorry I wasted my time watching. Find someone professional to do the comparison next time.

I already own 3 Donner guitars. I plan on picking up their superstrat and maybe even a couple of their basses. Definately willing to add ore of their stuff to my collection. Check out their APP...

It amazes me that such a cheap guitar sounds decent. I have ordered a few things on eBay from Donner, and pretty much every listing has best offer option. I usually offer about $25 less than listing price, and every time they except the offer. Seen it with all the extra stuff you got for $127 so will offer $100 and see if they go for it? Great review! By the way to me the made in Mexico did sound better, but the Donner still was impressive for what it cost! How did the playing feel compared to the Mexican one?

    • @RichBischoff
      @RichBischoff  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Both felt pretty good. My Fender is more played in. I've had it for about 15 years.

Very surprised by the Donner guitar.. l have the Harley Benton equivalent had quite a few issues with it machine heads really difficult to turn, input Jack socket loose. Mim Strat sounds good but I would go with the Donner.. cool sounds and video thanks Rich🙂🎸👍
