Dude, every time I see a Sylvanian Families playset in stores, I'm immediately reminded of Maple Town, the aesthetics are so similar. Looked up Sylvanian Families tho and I'm surprised that it predated that anime and the playsets that followed!
It's a bit more complicated then that, but yes the two lines are similar and funnily enough like the whole Gobots/Transformers thing, both of these lines were Japanese to begin with. Sylvanian Families (Calico Critters in Canada) were first created by Epoch in 1985, a year later (1986) Maple Town was created by Bandai and unlike the former, Maple Town had an anime by Toei Animation, which was then dubbed into English to help promote their toy line by Tonka (no doubt working with Bandai again after the success they had with Gobots/Machine Robo). There was a second series produced afterwards in 1987, but that series wasn't dubbed. Sylvanian Families wouldn't have any adaptations made till with DiC's animated series in 1987 and short stories made in the UK and Japan using the figures themselves. But Maple Town only lasted for a couple of years, while Sylvanian Families continues to be sold to this day, even having it's own dedicated shop in London.
