Indeed - an older version than the 1997 film and thank goodness. A silk smooth feast of Henry James, morally compelling in his usual psychological and nuanced treatment of an impossible situation. As it happens, I'm very fond of many in the cast and relish their performances. John Castle, Suzanne Bertish, Elizabeth Spriggs. This is literary and period television adaptation when they knew what they were doing and had an audience that appreciated it. Thank you for the posting.

An impressive condensation, does a good job of keeping the flavor of James. The wordplay is exquisite although it often doesn't feel natural; yet there are moments that stand out as poignantly true.

I enjoyed this version but I already understood the plot and reasoning behind the characters. it might have helped to emphasise how Kate wanted money and had a plan to use her wealthy friend's illness and the fact she was also in love with Mr Denture to achieve her own ends. She encourages her fiance to romance and marry her friend so that following her death he inherits a fortune and then they can marry and enjoy it after. She starts out feeling in control but her own guilt and love for her friend begin to cause her anxiety and she knows this is the same for Mr Denture to whom she is secretly engaged. By the time her friend dies and selflessly gives everything to the two people she is closest to, their love has become tainted and guilt ridden. Kate has achieved her ambition but paid the price for a Pyrrhic victory. I'm not sure if this version clearly puts that across if you don't already know the story. Henry James has a beautiful writing style but you may prefer to read it in bite sized pieces because it is richly laden and dense in its imagery and context. The first few pages of "The Portrait of a Lady" feel like a feast of English literature and blow you away!

Chaim: It certainly is! It has been said that this is probably the most complex of James' novels. I managed to get through 4 chapters before giving up. Apparently, Helena Bonham Carter who played in a later version of Wings of the Dove had to give up too. However, I will try again, (sometime). Best of luck and I agree Wonder Gal's English seems fine to me. Cheers.

Great production & acting, but - and it's not its fault - doesn't even come close to James' novel. This to the novel WINGS is as a trailer is to an entire movie. (The last scene alone is a mutilating mash of two crucial & entirely separate episodes!)

when someone steeps so low to go on a mission for money of course they won't go back to where they were. One is, coz they need the money two is they have lost their soul. Maybe they loved each other deeply to do such a heinous thing in order to be together, but when the other realizes the truth then there is no future for that couple. The guy is guilty they manipulated a sick woman and girl is heart broken coz her man fell in love with someone else.

Made no sense to me....it was like : what really happened ? Vanity of vanities ....a chasing after the wind... Lord Mark was the only honest person but that foolish dying girl refused him ! What could be sadder than refusing someone's love and worse still - to love someone who doesn't love you, actually. It is better to be loved than to love.... that is proven thoroughly here.
