The Virgin Atlantic Fleet In 2022: Just Three Aircraft Types

  • Especially when compared with fellow UK carrier British Airways, the fleet of Virgin Atlantic is a much simpler and smaller collection of aircraft. Indeed, the fleet of British Airways is nearly eight times larger than the subject of today's video. Having shrunk drastically due to the pandemic, let's take a deep dive into the fleet of Virgin Atlantic.

    Some of the a340s now fly out of Bournemouth as cargo jets for European Cargo. They still have the distinctive red engines and tails, although the virgin branding has been removed. Beautiful jets.

    747 is a special plane. Evolution means we must move on but the 747 really lead the way as a great example. Recently flew in a virgin a330 and it was a smooth 2 engine experience. Superb. Planes always amaze me in how is it even possible to do what they do.

    I flew on Virgin Atlantic A330-300 Premium Economy from Heathrow to New Delhi back in 2019, one of my favourite flights to record. I just really love Virgin Atlantic I find it a very young person airline compared to British Airways which to me feels stuck in the past. I love the mood lighting on Virgin Atlantic as well as the mini afternoon tea that they serve you on arrival to your destination, I also love the fact that they give out mini menu's even on Standard Economy which is lovely I wish more airlines did this. My favourite plane used by Virgin is either the late B747 or the late A340. My next flight on Virgin Atlantic will be on an A330-300 Economy from Heathrow to Miami and on an A330-900neo Economy from Miami to Heathrow which I'm thoroughly looking forward to.

      The silver, blue and red livery were one of my all time favourites. It was a very elegant combination on a superbly majestic looking aircraft. For a time the A340-600 was the longest commercial aircraft in the world, superseded I think by the 747-8i. What a classic machine those Virgin A340-600s were 😳 👏

    Very informative and great to see Virgin Atlantic investing in such a fleet.
    I am curious as to why they operate three completely different aircraft trpes.
    For example the A330neo and 787-9 have similar passenger numbers and range, with both types capable of operating all of Virgins route network.
    Also they could have simplified their fleet with just one aircraft family type for example an all 787 fleet of maybe 787-9 and 787-10’’s or an all A350-900 and A360-1000 fleet.
    While the 797-10 has a more limited range it’s still capable of operating routes like like London to west coast of USA, like United already do.
    Its just quite a few aircraft types for a small airline like Virgin!

    • @lactoese
      @lactoese ปีที่แล้ว

      Well… I guess the reason why they have the 787s, was because they are efficient and possibly an aircraft that would be able to do a330 jobs considering similar size and capacity, while being more efficient. Also a fleet consisting of only 787s would not really work as the capacity of the 787-10 is still much lower than that of the a350-1000 and would not cater to high capacity routes such as LHR-JFK. It makes more sense to have a very flexible fleet with varying capacities.

      Airlines use third party providers for baggage handling, the airport itself for the infrastructure and baggage screening, combine that with airports being understaffed and things like that happen.
      Not really Virgin's fault.

      I flew "upper class" on their 787 from LHR-JFK and thought that seat was crap too. The diagonal seat configuration means you have to twist your neck painfully to see out the window. The lie flat beds have a footboard that is only designed for people under 6ft. If you're taller than that, like me, you won't fit in the bed. Also one arm rest is in front, the other arm rest behind you so using them twists you weirdly. It's a crap layout and I wouldn't fly them again because of it
