The Total Cost of Emily's Outfits In Emily In Paris - Financial Review | Netflix

  • Hi Luxe Minds community! This week I decided to research the lifestyle of a fictional character to see if it would be sustainable in the real world. Netflix's show Emily in Paris portrays the life of a social media marketer who moves to Paris and lives a very lavish life - filled with endless Chanel bags. I hope this analysis helps you better understand how out of touch directors and TV stylists are with reality when they create these financially illiterate characters. Let me know what you think of Emily's spending habits.

I mean Chanel has gone (for the most part) to crap after Karl Lagerfeld died. Virginie Viard is not the right creative director to get Chanel from. They could have at least gotten vintage Chanel even though that is even more unrealistic. Not sure why they didn't put her in younger, cooler, more obscure designers from Paris (it is one of the fashion capitals after all) that could have used the show to highlight their clothing and not made her clothing so ugly. Half the time she looks like an eccentric Grandma and the other half she looks like Chanel barfed on her.

@@bridgetkane2856 I would've loved for them to use this as an opportunity to highlight some new designers. Like her phone case caused a spike in camera-printed phone cases. They could've done the same with her wardrobe and new designers - missed opportunity.

Luxe Minds Totally! Not only would it have been a really good chance to highlight those younger, up-and-coming designers (who are also more likely to appeal to young people than established brands like Chanel), it makes a lot more sense for her character too.

This show is a perfect example of product placement gone wrong. I imagine a lot of those clothes were borrowed or gifted. They place gratuitous shots of Emily pacing just so we see the clothes. They took the same approach on SATC. It just feels formulaic to, once again, put a woman in clothes she can’t afford (here’s looking at you Carrie Bradshaw) and having her strut around the city. It was fun the first time around, but now feels outdated. Not to mention, one of the biggest criticisms of Carrie and SATC was her financial irresponsibility.

And my job right know is training and studying to get into my country's police. So her being into fashion as a hobbie while working in non fashion related marketing it's fine. I have to agree with you. She doesn't look terrible (Lily Collins could wear a hefty bag and make it look good!), but she looks like a teenager who's trying to emulate other people, rather than dressing appropriately for the type of job Emily does. She definitely needs to refine her look a bit more, to suit her age. Lily Collins is a tiny young woman that designers crawl all over one another to dress. But she is over 30. Her fashion needs to grow up with her, and reflect someone that deserves the respect she demands as a character. A lot of things just don't match up right now, but I hope Lily, as a producer, catches a few of these hints. She's a beautiful young woman (who, in the show, dresses like someone in her twenties, ready to go out to the bars), but she needs to ground this character a bit more, if she wishes to have longevity with it. I'll admit, though...I've never wanted to BE another person more than her, when it comes to getting to experience Paris as this character, and work with such a lovely, diverse and talented cast. I'm old enough to be the mother of Lucas Bravo...but this is one of the dreamiest, most genuine leading men I've ever seen...OH, la la!!

in reality she would have a French salary with French taxes, my best guess is she'd be starting at maybe 45 to 50K Euros for that job and her level of experience, and you can deduct almost a third of that as tax, health insurance etc so she's in fact working with a lot LESS than you say. Not to mention, there is no way anyone is spending less than 60 bucks on the dinners in Paris alone, and you're not counting all her excursions (travel costs - taxis, subway etc), so 'real Life Emily' is already doomed

heres the thing, i would love if there was shows with financially irresponsible protagonists if the show actually reflected it. a character who spends all her money on clothing and has to deal with the ramifications would be really interesting bc that does happen. the problem with emily in Paris is that her spending doesnt have any real impact on the rest of her life. the show would be so interested if many she put herself into debt in order to appear "french" and then realized that 1) its based of a sterotype of the french and 2) she didn't need to do that to be fashionable and respected 3) you can balence things out

  • @TalkingTalie

As a French person that has been living in Paris for +7 years now, the “fashion side” of the show was what I was most excited about.
It was the PERFECT opportunity for the stylists to channel that “french girl look”, very simple and nonchalant.
It blew my mind not only the huge amount of designer clothing/accessories Emily owns, but how she wears them so casually.
In Paris, you usually see young women wearing Zara/Mango to work everyday, and same their more “luxury” pieces for when they go out in the evening, to dinner, or in the weekends.
Also, Paris is FILLED with thrift stores, and although they can be expensive sometimes still, I found it crazy that for someone who claims to be so into fashion, not to go dive into the treasure chest that Parisian thrift stores can be.

The show in general seems weirdly outdated to me. This kind of spending was semi-acceptable in Sex and the City because it was done well (and Carrie was in fact called out on her spending habits by friends), but this was also in the 90s-early 2000s. Emily in Paris goes for the same kind of vibe and simply comes across as being 20 years behind the trend, out-of-touch and generally a lazy copy of shows/films we've seen dozens of times already.

I feel like Emily dresses much "older" than her age. I know that in recent years Chanel, Dior, Givenchy etc. became very "mainstream", in the sense that younger women/girls save up to buy that stuff. I see 20something years old women with Chanel bags now, when I was 20 it was not a thing. Chanel was for the chic 40-something woman who could afford it because she had a great career or a rich husband. When I was 20, women my age wouldn't be caught dead wearing that famous Chanel-style blazer because that was considered "mum's clothes", it was "older women style". Things have changed of course, I think it's nice to see younger people looking into European brands, however a lot of the times I wonder if they actually appreciate the craftsmanship and the true cost behind designer stuff, or if they just do it because "it's fashionable and everyone is doing it".

A couple things... as an American who lived abroad, you don’t get taxed on your income until you make 105,000 USD a year and depending on your company, you might not be able to have a Roth IRA. _as an American who lived abroad, you don’t get taxed on your income until you make 105,000 USD a year _
That sunds really weird, which country was that?
In Europe, generally speaking, it doesn't matter what your nationality is, you pay income tax in the country where you live, just like everybody else, and you don't get a $105,000 tax deduction.
Are you sure you weren't evading local taxes?

    • @somecherryblossom2757
      @somecherryblossom2757 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Jacob_Junge I mean you don’t pay taxes on your income to the US. Every year you still have to declare to the US that you have foreign income but until that amount exceeds 105,000 USD, you do not pay taxes to the US. You only pay taxes to the US for the amount above 105,000. So if you made 110,000 a year you would only pay taxes to the US for 5,000 USD. The maximum amount changes on a yearly basis, it keeps increasing.
Local taxes are a different story. I lived in Dubai, where there were no local taxes until 2018 and even that was just a 5% VAT but no taxes on income. I’m 100% sure I was not evading local taxes lol 😂 there just weren’t any to begin with hahaha

What's still weird is that you guys have to keep paying US taxes when you don't live there anymore, but that's a different issue.

Also 243$ has to cover transport too. maybe her company covers some idk. and maybe it's not much per se, but quite a sum when you have less than 250$ left. Add some minor everyday expenses - soap, toilet paper, laundry (or in her case I guess it's dryclean. LOADS of money for dryclean), etc. Add visiting museums, theatres, events...
