Love, love, love this track!!! A #1 Pop and #1 R&B hit in 1976. Sold 2.5M singles. (BTW, perhaps the greatest and most distinctive falsetto/soprano voice of that era belonged to Russell Tompkins of the Stylistics, who had a mess of dynamite hits in the mid-'70s, including "Stoned in Love with You" and "Betcha By Golly Wow." And another stellar cheating song from that time was "Me and Mrs. Jones" by Billy Paul.)
The simplicity of the choreography, the smoothness of the music all showcased the excellent vocals. We who grew up in the 70's took all these outstanding groups for granted because they were everywhere. I miss them.
I'm an old guy, and I'd never heard the word "trifling" until I started listening to young reactors. Sometimes I'm amazed at how language changes from generation to generation 😊🙃
I'm a old Southern lady and I have heard and used the word trifle for years- (trifle is a thing of little importance). But not trifling. Did trifling come from trifle?
This brings me back to my 4 year old self. That talking intro was so memorable! This song went to #1 in 1976. They don't write songs like this anymore, which is sad.
Born in 1950!! Got to experience all the good music 50's, 60's, and 70's!!!! Then played music in a Blues and Southern rock band with my brother for 30 years!!!
I always knew this was about an affair, still so sad. Love the 70’s groups. They all had similar dance moves. Another great song about a similar subject is Me and Mrs.Jones by Billy Paul.
Four years later The Manhattans had another big hit called 'Shining Star' (1980) It wasnt big as the worldwide hit 'Kiss and Say Goodbye' but 'Shining Star' was another soulful ballad that won them a Grammy Award. And Britt, your reactions are entertaining 😆😆😆
I think just about everybody liked the Manhattans, they were so great. I mean, how can can you not? Are you deaf? the lead vocalist alone is out of this world!

There was nothing like seeing The Manhattans in concert. I got to do so twice - in 1976 and 1980. The harmonies, the choreography, and the lead vocals by Gerald Alston (the last living member). Brings back good memories.
I just think so much of the older music had a focus on….ability. Can you sing? Bring it. Don’t stand on a stage grind and talk…..sing. Can you sing. Love it. Respect.
Unfortunately the gentleman singing lead (Gerald Alston) is the only one still with us. Check out Shining Star by the Manhattans , and Do it Baby by the Miracles ( Smokey Robinson's group led by Billy Griffin in matching pink outfits)
You can tell this song is building to something. The string sound is awesome. The mix of voices is special. Each one of these guys could probably crank out hit records in today's music scene. This song reminds me a lot of "I Wish It Would Rain".
Another GREAT 70's song from my high school years. I don't know if I even know another Manhattans song, but this song is one of my all time favorite songs. The song was written by the bass player and was released in 1976.
The Manhattans are great R&B vocal group who started in the 60's. Their 2 biggest hits are "Kiss & Say Goodbye" & "Shining Star". But they had other good songs such as "There's No Me Without You", "Am I Losing You", "Forever By Your Side", "Just The Lonely Talking Again" etc.

More like no talent. Music died around 93

Yep, I was born in 62 and had a ball living my teens in the 70s
1966 here, and the 70s was music's best decade.
Same. 1963 here, too. I got the 60s, 70s, and 80s growing up. I could not have lived in three better decades for music.

Delfonics/ Temprees/ Black Ivory/ Dynamic Superiors/ The Moments/ Intruders/ Dramatics/ Skip Mahoney etc!!
Rose Royce's Car Wash album was a favorite of mine. Thank God I had older siblings that listened to the best music in the 60's & 70's.

Totally agree we took this stuff for granted. This is perfection...the vocal talent is off the charts.
Gerald Alston is the lead singer. The Manhattans are from New Jersey and are named after the cocktail drink not the city.
it is really amazing how timeless the music of the 70s is. This brings back so many wonderful memories, cleaning the house and listening to oldies.
Sophomore year in high school (1980) The Manhattans came out with Shining Star - was one of the slow dance favorites and a great song!
I became a metalhead about 1970 and was never a huge R&B fan. But I will always love certain R&B songs and this one most of all.

Love those 70's harmony groups. This song is awesome. BTW, you are just the cutest...
