You all are great! I go to your channel before I shop for kitchen“upgrades.” Even if I spend more than I’m use to on items; I know I’m buying VALUE and most likely won’t have to replace most of these items for YEARS! Thank you all for your detail scrutinizing of these vast products.
Me too. This is why I enjoy America's Test Kitchen. They are very thorough with their reviews and explaining also the science behind the recipes they present. Love it!
A month ago I bought the 20 piece set of those Rubbermaid brilliance containers after moving into my new place. I almost bought the knockoffs, but saw the Rubbermaids were similar in price. I'm super happy with my purchase, and this video just reinforces that feeling.
I have to disagree. I bought some less than a year ago, and two have cracked (never even dropped them, I don’t know how it happened), and the lids leaked. One also melted in the microwave. I’m very disappointed.
I miss these longer format test videos. The short ones are nice if you just want to get to the recommendation, but the longer ones are nice because you get to learn more about the process and also make more informed purchasing decisions for similar products down the line.
The very first time I have 100% agreement with your Rubbermaid. They were the best I’ve ever had. I have even given sets to my two daughters and they agree. Thank you
Great episode. One test you haven’t covered though, which is important for a lot of people due to limited storage cupboard space and it is stackability. No good if these perfect containers take up a huge amount of storage space in kitchen cupboards. Perfect if they stack inside each other taking up way less space. Thanks
I have the Brilliance collection (plastic winner) and they stack/nest better than most. The little hinged clips on the lids can be annoying in the cupboard but I tuck the lids end-down into the bigger tubs and can get all the pieces of the set in a fairly small space.
Nesting any brand of glass container increases risk of damaging them. Even small scratches and chips can ruin their integrity. That’s a major safety issue.

I love my canning jars. Durable glass, easy to clean, standard sizes, the lids all fit perfectly. I don't want more petroleum products in my life. If you leave an inch of headspace, they freeze well too.
Same. That’s what I mainly use but when I have left overs, I don’t wanna put them in a mason jar. So I’ve been looking at Pyrex storage containers. You can bake in them. Put them in the freezer. And use them as food storage containers.
I agree about the Pyrex. I guess any heavy glass works well. I have lots of Pyrex, and a set of Snapware that I use all the time. Trying to avoid plastic - especially single use plastic! I found out recently that of all recycled plastic, only 10% is actually recycled. The rest is floating in our oceans (we ingest it in seafood), breaking down in dumps, being made into mountains in huge warehouses.
i can't imagine how difficult it was to make this video!!! thanks for all the effort! i have those korean glasslock containers and i find the lids hard to close and the silicone channels are too thin to wash easily
Excellent review. My mom had a phrase, "I'm tired just watching you." That is so true watching all those tests. My patience would have failed at the third open and close of the lid.
I love ATK's thoroughness when testing everything, and I now have a huge equipment wish list based on ATK's best recommendations. Thanks ATK for your dedication to making us better cooks and consumers.
Finally! I've been waiting for you guys to release the test results from a storage containers study. Thanks so much for sharing the information. I recently purchased a large set of Rubbermaid Brilliance storage containers from Bed Bath & Beyond. I haven't tried them out yet. After this shining review, I can't wait to give them a go :D Have a great weekend.
I actually bought the winning plastic container 2years prior to when I watch this video. I knew this was good and I agree with your conclusion Rubbermaid container is a very solid product. I was confident that it won’t capture odder and won’t leak, and the moment I saw the lid has 2 holes I knew this container is for me. Whoever designed this container was very thoughtful!
I wish you had tested nesting, which is so important to many of us. Thank you for the review, I trust your testing and reporting. you guys do a great job!
Your folks are just wonderful. Thank you for all you do making cooking so enjoyable and helping us curate solid equipment. And you do it all with so much enthusiasm and care for your audience. Bravo!
Thank you. WOW This was an exhaustive test. I appreciate that you took the time to do this for everyone. As others have already mentioned, now I know which ones I can rely on the most and get a better value for my money.
My thoughts on Plastic Containers..I use them rarely but when I do I, -only use them with cold foods. I bought them from a good company like 'Xeonic'. Looked for that "PP for plastic" on the bottom of the container. The best is to use glass, it is safe and will last forever. can be shoved in oven and freezed. Plastic is mostly great if you sell it. *just remember the best use for plastic is to use it with dry condiments in room temp in closet. freezing or microwaving, do it at your own risk*
Thank you for taking what I assumed would be the boringest thing I'd ever research and making it genuinely interesting haha! You also tested for many important things I never would have thought about until a use-case scenario.
ATK...you guys ROCK. I've bought products based on your testing. And everything you said about the ones I purchased worked. Most assume because it's more expensive the better. Nope. I purchased a bread knife at 12 bucks and it's the best edge bread knife I've ever had. I bought one for over 50 bucks and was never happy with it.
I just recently purchased a set of the Rubbermaid Brilliance containers and I can attest they are a winner! I stored chicken Tikka Masala over the weekend and warmed it up for lunch. After a wash, the container looks brand new!
I have been inspired to "Marie Komo" my kitchen. When it comes to wise choices for how to get a grip on the randomness, America's Test Kitchen comes through again, this time with a scientific examination of storage containers. For a person who has trouble opening various kinds of containers, Rubbermaid Brilliance makes my life simpler. After watching this ATK review, I was off the fence and all in for Rubbermaid brilliance. As a member of BB&B and a careful Target shopper, the price of this makeover was lessened. They look fabulous in my cupboard. Each dry food is perfectly visible and even beautiful in stacks of threes or fours with the 9.6 cup 11" deep container as my main size, followed by the 4.7 C and 3.2 C sizes. I have them organized by categories. Gone are the partially full spill-prone store packages and the bulk bags.. Every food has its own air-tight container. No one mentioned how satisfying it is to gently press down on lid, listen to the air escape, and snap down the "wings" that plug the holes and lock the lid in place. I use the smaller sizes in my fridge and freezer where I can quickly ID what is inside. Target sells MBD clear plastic bins in three long sizes that have turned all my fridge shelves into organized "file" drawers of similar foods. Within these bins the Rubbermaid Brilliance containers keep everything fresher longer. The two products used together are durable, clean, and make even a deep fridge accessible with a pull on the "drawer". The investment in all these two products has meant no more lost, rotting food.or wasted time searching for ingredients. I let go of all the mismatched containers. I'm left with a tidy kitchen that "sparks joy".
I have found the plastic container that passed all your tests to be the best for storing food. I recommend it. I also use lock lock brand which works for all types of storage. Love your t Utube channel which keeps me informed.
I have Glasslock, one of the ones, she noted as being difficult to close, or I might be guessing at that, since they don't note the manufactures they are showing that they don't like... They are tight, a bit hard to close, but I've had mine for a couple a years, running fine. I haven't put them in the oven. I use them for lunches, or anything that could stain. I only use plastic with salad. I avoid using plastic with liquid items.
There are reviews on their website. Cole & Mason Derwent Gourmet Precision Pepper Mill (www.amazon.com/dp/B003OICYZO/?tag=cioequippilot-20) is their pick. Peugeot is the runner up.
I used the previous version of expensive Rubbermaid containers the last few years. I think the microwave at hubby's work is too high a wattage, they appear to melt in areas & crack. He has a hard side lunchbox too, so I know they aren't getting broken/crushed in there. I have a few left, but saw the new line and bought two full sets last year. I love these new ones, especially how they seal, stack, store and don't stain. We also hand wash, as we don't have a dishwasher. Regarding durability, a year later, they are melting & cracking the same as the ones I replaced, I've had to throw out some already. So disappointing! I'll be buying the square glass brands with locking lids, OXO & Ikea. I hope they will be a better long term solution.
I've been reading recent reviews on the sleak & stackable clear Rubbermaid ones. They said were good in the video above....but I've seen a lot of complaints about breaking easy. Also that they get a white film you cant get rid of. Also that they do not hold up when microwaved. So- it sounds like they are great for food storage but you should hand wash (as you do). But also, if you want them to last, don't use them in the microwave. There are newer versions that are glass and the lids is the same as the older version. I'm debating on getting the plastic for food storage and size of each glass for reheating & cooking.
I love your work! Thank you so much for all the testings you guys do : ) this one is so great because who doesn't use containers all the time? Thank you thank you thank you : )
Thank-you. Also, knowing which options are USA made would be helpful. I feel like in theory, USA mfgs use less toxic materials - at least in recent years.
I've noticed that many of my favorite containers with latch lids have gotten harder and harder to latch over time. Great to see the exhaustive testing here because many people wouldn't even think of things like that.
Pyrex glass with the glass lids with the silicon gasket edge has been wonderful for me. The problem is I can't find them, only found them once at Sam's club.
They’re available on Amazon, but there are mixed reviews. They outsourced their manufacturing to China which has resulted in quality and safety issues. They’re not the same reliable Pyrex of the old days.
I use round and rectangular glass containers. Fill it. Cover it with saran wrap. Snap the silicone or plastic lid over that. The lid is never in the microwave. The lid is rarely exposed directly to food without saran wrap blocking it.
I was most interested in the chemicals used to make the non glass containers, gaskets, and lids. The reliability and functionality are important but are all secondary to the toxicity and and possible off gassing of the “plastics”.
Thats right, These plastics give off chemicals that desroy mens ability to make testosterone. If you want your mans pencil to lose it's lead keep using these plastic containers, especially to reheat foods.
I agree that this is important, but in my opinion I don't think anyone can really attest to any particular plastic being safe at this point. Only in the last decade we've learned that phthalates and bpa are toxic hormone disrupters and they were certainly in plastics that were previously dubbed microwave, dishwasher, freezer safe. Glass is nonreactive in contact with acidic foods and doesn't leach chemicals into foods. It's heavy for sure, but I've been meaning to get more exercise anyway.
Bought Rubbermaid brilliance on your recommendation in this video. Have had them over a year. They are awesome. I have thrown the way everything else. They are everything you said about them and more
For the price you can’t beat the (plastic) Rubbermaid easy find lid containers. 10 bucks and you get 12 containers of various sizes. Sometimes you can find them with vents that you snap open/close in the lids. They’re very durable and the stack very nicely for organization. I highly recommend them. The only thing is I wouldn’t microwave chili or anything with high levels of oil in the containers, but honestly I wouldn’t do that to any plastic container. Try them, you won’t be disappointed! I spend a lot of time in my kitchen.
For plastic I'll stick with Tupperware, you can't beat the lifetime warranty. I recently had to finally replace some containers from the 70's they charged me $5.00 to ship 10 items. Also some of my plastic from Tupperware is oven safe, microwave safe, freezer safe and dishwasher safe.
You shipped back 45 year old Tupperware? That is CHEAP! And I am sure that is NOT the meaning of ‘lifetime warranty’. Since there is no way for readers to ‘verify’ the product failure FOR YOU we will have to presume that the good people at Tupperware just rolled their eyes, took back your crusty vintage and YOU got a bright new, modern set FREE. Now imagine if everyone did that. Tupperware needs to update that policy to 1 year or suffer profit loss that will hurt the business, the employees, etc. when, in fact, they made a brilliant product that CAN last 45 years. I have no respect for you and your crowing about how they stood by their warranty. YOU ARE CHEAP!
nateman10 In the case of Tupperware...they should give you the ‘original’ for your ‘lifetime warranty’. It’s poisonous to use plastic anyway. By the time anyone figures out the meaning of ‘lifetime warranty’, Tupperware, as all container manufacturers, will have switched over to glass. Only numbskulls today would be using 40 year old Tupperware and seeking its ‘lifetime replacement’. earth911.com/living-well-being/the-end-of-the-tupperware-age-choosing-safer-food-storage-containers/
@@Propfaqs No. Wrong. She's not cheap for taking a companies promise as the truth. Tupperware is a stand up company. They treat the consultant's and the customers with respect. They have been around for it seems like forever. They must have everything down to a fine art. You insinuating that this company doesn't know what it's doing is insulting on top of that to shame the customer for taking advantage of the offer a fine company gives it's customers. What is your problem? I love my Tupperware and I will take advantage of the lifetime guarantee and not even feel bad about it. Obviously Tupperware knows what it's doing.
I invested in several Brilliance containers, after watching this recommendation. Within 3 months of use, warming up foods in the microwave, every last piece developed rippled cracks in the sides. The only thing they are good for is shelf storage. I don't even have a big powerful microwave, I have a little tiny one with low power. I was very disappointed.
This host gives excellent presentations. The experiments and recommendations are sooooo thorough and helpful. Thank you for having a TH-cam channel with so much great content, Cooks and ATK!!
I have that set also and really like them. One tip though that a new user should be aware of. When the seal around the lid is damp, you probably won't be able to seal the lid. When you wash them, let the lid sit out for maybe a day so the seal will completely dry out before use. Otherwise, you will go insane trying to lock them in place. Believe me, they will seem to be completely dry but the seal will swell up and you will not be able to close them otherwise. In a pinch, wrap the dish in plastic wrap and aluminum foil and then snap the lid on the next day.
I have GlassLock containers. The oldest are 7 years old and they and the lids (gasket included) are all good as new. The downside to them, which does also make them seal incredibly well, is it takes some effort to latch them, especially the largest rectangular containers. They are not good if you don't have strong hands, have arthritis, etc. The design is quite similar to the OXO glass container, but as with anything, if OXO makes a version of something it's better than the competition. I'd put GlassLock as a less expensive but still quality alternative to the OXO, just with the caveats mentioned above.
I personally use glass lock containers that I bought from Amazon that are made by Anchor I find that they are the best at keeping clean and keeps my food fresh for days the rim is very easy to clean doesn’t stain at all and I just love them
I've had trouble with so many different ones I've tried so I stick with a six pack of Rubbermaid take alongs in the rectangular size and just take good care of them, soak them in cool dawn water. Then get more when they're done for.
Thanks! Will go with your recommendations since I recently had a Pyrex glass dish explode in my preheated oven (after baking 20 mins) & absolutely can not trust their cheap soda lime glass anymore. No more untrustworthy, dangerous Pyrex in our household.
I think an important criteria should also be how easily they store in the cabinet when not in use. It really annoys me when I search for good storage containers and don’t have enough space to store them.
My best containers are those Glad and Ziploc lookalikes you get free with lunch meat. They seal and they stack and you can leave them behind no worries. They also clean up easy. Of course they aren't oven or micro safe. But they are free!
Thank you for this revue. I purchased the Rubbermaid 4-piece set for a friend and I'm glad I made the right choice. I'm also Thankful for the Oxo top-choice in the glass category. D
Southern Grammas had the right idea using Cool Whip containers, and margarine tubs. The containers are commercial quality and the lids match. And they come filled with food. AND the containers are labeled to match.
For home storage i use common pyrex bowls with rubber lids that are easily replaceable if they get damaged. No complicated snap locks, just press the lid on. I have 3 sizes and they can nest with the lids on so you don’t lose them or have them falling all over the place. I pan to add a 2qt size yet
America's Test Kitchen should test the limits of both borosilicate glass and soda lime glass! I'm sure everyone would be interested in that. Supposedly, borosilicate can take temperature changes better, but how much better? Do they both explode when reaching certain limits or is one more likely to just crack and crumble safely? (I was told this is what borosilicate does when it is stressed and that soda lime explodes shards of glass everywhere). What is the truth? America's test kitchen- Please solve the mystery once and for all!
Hooray I actually bought this container at Walmart and it does exactly what she says i also put in fish for a few days and it rinsed completely smell free after using a spoon of vinegar with the dish soap
I’ve had a set of the Rubbermaid brilliance that I got as a gift moving into my first apartment. I’ve always thought they were amazing. They manage to squeeze a ton of air out when you press them down and use the clamps. I had guacamole in a small one for about 3 days before it finally started to turn brown, I was shocked.
The problem that I'm having with OXO Good Grips is that the glass around the locking clips is splintering off - one evening I found a glass shard in my dinner - So I'm really glad to learn of the clear plastic ones - thank you for doing this testing.
The plastic locking clips cannot make the glass chip. You must have mishandled them. Plastic containers leech out chemicals that destroy the ability to make testosterone. No thanks. I'll stick with the OXO glass containers.
I bought that rubbermaid container set. It didn't last long, i had to throw away 2 of the bigger containers because they cracked after awhile. I plan on trying the glass containers. Thank you for testing them.
Oh no, I always put glass in the oven before it preheats! I thought the slow rise in temperature would help it not crack. Thanks for the tip and explanation. I'm waiting until the oven is preheated from now on. I want my kitchenware to have a long life.
I agree, plus the lids can be easily and cheaply replaced. I've had a lot of storage containers with lids that crapped out while the container was still good.
Henry - While the jars are good for many things, the 8 cup size they tested here has uses even the larger jars can't fulfill. I have a selection of jars but still have several glass rectangles that I can pre-compose a meal and then heat it. They provide a more uniform thickness to the food which allows more even heating. I can then just store any leftovers in the same container, if I'm in a hurry.
@@Blakehx ......Me, too! But that only means I clean up breakage more often than most other people do. LOL Being klutzy won't stop me from using glass.
Ultimate odor results: Purchased the winner, Rubbermaid Brilliance for storing homemade kimchi batches and my results were super surprising! Note: I didn’t get these with any intentions or notions that they’d ever recover from having kimchi stored in them and they were purchased exclusively for that purpose but after four months storing authentic kimchi made with all the goodness of fish sauce, garlic and salted shrimps- fermenting the entire time, I washed the containers simply in soaps and water. The plastic didn’t retain any scent- blew me away! But the grey seals around the lid held on to it very strongly. I think these would work amazing for everyday storage and use.
Awesome presentation! A well-crafted testing process and demonstration video. This is without a doubt the definitive video on food storage containers. Mike ☺
I wonder why you didn’t test Tupperware’s products? Is it because of the limited way you can purchase it? Thank you for sharing all the testers hard work!

I've always loved how you guys test stuff. So awesome.
Would you do a review on pepper mills. Hard to find a good one.
AnAristotelian Thanks.
There are reviews on their website. Cole & Mason Derwent Gourmet Precision Pepper Mill (www.amazon.com/dp/B003OICYZO/?tag=cioequippilot-20) is their pick. Peugeot is the runner up.
Alex beat me to it. That is what is recommended in their 2001-2017 cookbook.
Yes, Cole & Mason that Alex recommends is excellent...best I have ever owned.
keld101 they recommended unicorn brand in previous videos, it's rather expensive, I'm using le crest, it's really good as well
You guys really thought of everything during testing. Love it.
I'm debating on getting the plastic for food storage and size of each glass for reheating & cooking.
the rubbermaid is a champ. good job on being super thorough!
Oxo keeps winning all the competitions ;)
Thanks.I went back to glass along time ago.Better for me and the environment.
Wow, y'all are super thorough! Thanks for all of your great videos!
I've noticed that many of my favorite containers with latch lids have gotten harder and harder to latch over time. Great to see the exhaustive testing here because many people wouldn't even think of things like that.
This video was everything I dreamed and hoped it would be. Thank you!
Pyrex glass with the glass lids with the silicon gasket edge has been wonderful for me. The problem is I can't find them, only found them once at Sam's club.
Costco sells these, they are called Pyrex Snapware. On sale right now in fact.
yep, they are great
They’re available on Amazon, but there are mixed reviews.
Glass is the only safe material. Even if the plastic is bpa, bht, etc.. free there can still be issues.
They are everything you said about them and more
Love your reviews. Every time I need one item for my kitchen, I look for your videos.
Your segments are my favorite. Thank you and your demo team!

If you are ever in need of a consultant, let me know! I'll be more than happy to assist with all of your TW needs.
@@Propfaqs Oh bull. Go do something that matters. Save the world but keep it to yourself.
Imagine being part of the team to smell the tuna and anchovies containers. Thank you for your service, America’s Test Kitchen team members.
So nice to have information to help protect and save my money and time.
Yall are a life saver, honestly, a real hero tbh
I love your testings! Thank you for making them and easy our lives not to mention help us to save money as we purchase our things. Thank you.
This host gives excellent presentations. The experiments and recommendations are sooooo thorough and helpful. Thank you for having a TH-cam channel with so much great content, Cooks and ATK!!
I love my oxo glass containers! I'm happy they made number one here:)
Yes they are awesome. I love the removable gaskets. The rectangular shapes stack wonderfully in the fridge.
Going shopping! My glass containers leak. Now I know what to buy! Thanks!
You know that's a very good point!
YES!!!!!!

Very thorough testing. Love this channel.
You guys are the best! I don't make a move in my kitchen without checking to see if you have info about it!
Thanks so much for this post. I need to purchase some new containers. Now I know which ones to purchase.
Great information. Love this channel. 👍
Now I know what to buy. Thank you from Malaysia!
This testing was so thorough I couldn't believe it
I greatly appreciate all of the testing you did. It will allow me to make a more informed purchase. Thank you.
Hooray I actually bought this container at Walmart and it does exactly what she says i also put in fish for a few days and it rinsed completely smell free after using a spoon of vinegar with the dish soap
This is such good science, as a researcher, it makes me so happy
Thank you for a real test, this obviously took a lot of time and money to produce!
Canning jars will hold most of what you want to save. They are pretty cheap with lots of uses.
Henry Good point... my only problem with them is the fact that they are breakable and I have butterfingers!
@@Blakehx ......Me, too! But that only means I clean up breakage more often than most other people do. LOL Being klutzy won't stop me from using glass.
Ultimate odor results:
Purchased the winner, Rubbermaid Brilliance for storing homemade kimchi batches and my results were super surprising!
Thumbs up for the vid. Thank you. One thing missing that I think is important: how easy are the containers to store?
I use the OXO 1.6 cup glass container as a butter dish. Works great.
Awesome presentation! A well-crafted testing process and demonstration video. This is without a doubt the definitive video on food storage containers. Mike ☺
Thanks for the test. I was expecting Tupperware brand included. 😅
I wonder why you didn’t test Tupperware’s products? Is it because of the limited way you can purchase it? Thank you for sharing all the testers hard work!
Because MLMs are a scam.
