When you paused and said that the intro sounded like honey, I thought to myself, just you wait a few seconds. Ella will melt you. My daughter and I both love to sing, and Ella is pretty much a goddess at our house. Lots of albums, dedicated Spotify and Pandora channels. And, well, Louis's voice is what it is. Ella's last note is like a benediction.

From the Canadian Prairies (Alberta) and with our church youth group went on Easter holidays to Vancouver and ended up in Victoria in B.C. at the Cave for our last day. Miss Ella was singing there, l was 17 and it was 1968 and I had never hear anything like her. BUT I knew I was in the presence of GREATNESS!!!! (By then I had tapped into Miss Aretha, so that helped me appreciated what I was seeing)

Louis was so amazing, and most people don't know that he had split his lip back in the late '20s, so most of his recorded music was during the declining years of his abilities! He always had to hold back so as not to do even greater damage.

They are one of the most gorgeous pairings in jazz and the boxed set of all 3 albums is a treasure trove. Another pairing I always love hearing is Billie Holiday and saxophonist Lester Young. They are like musical soul-mates. They were often known as Lady Day and Pres respectively, nicknames they gave each other. If you want to check them out, there is a live version of "Fine and Mellow" from the last stages of her life when her voice is all but gone but strangely beautiful in spite of it. The contrast between her croaking speaking voice during the intro and when she starts to sing is amazing. The long version has a solo from each of a spectacular line-up of musicians between verses and you can guess which solo is Lester because he plays like she sings. It's one of my favourite jazz recordings and my record collection, heavily weighted towards jazz of all kinds, is in four digits. Not boasting, I've had a *very* long time to accumulate it. In this instance, the face of the reactor reflects exactly what most people would experience with this duet- the reaction to beauty so exquisite that it twists up your insides and makes you want to cry out/laugh/weep all at the same time (while telling yourself to be silent so you can listen to perfection uninterrupted).
This is why I like your reactions. You don't shy away from these tunes and when you experience them, you give them the credit and appreciation they deserve. I wish more reactors would delve deeper into these grand old classics.

My parents had their albums , when I was a very young child. They were born in the 20's, I was born in the mid 50s. They hated my music, firstly with the Beatles in early 60's, but I would play my music any time they were out of the house. My Dad forbid us to touch his hi-fi, so had to be sneaky. My brother's were given their own portable record player, like the ones making a comeback now to play their Elvis records, Ricky Nelson, but nothing more modern or rock n roll. I would sing to Elvis music, having a good ear and picked up words easily. so, it was not a surprise that as soon as I could I wanted out. Music was my way to soothe myself, and I had a younger sister to protect from abuse, but when I was 16 I had friends who practiced in a church across the street from us, and my friend in high school and I would sit outside in summer and listen to them. They were just graduated, themselves, and one day I met a new player in their band who played several instruments. I was quite shy, so was he when it came to girls, but it was Devine intervention that I would meet and marry this talented Sax player and music was in our lives, together. We drove down the Coast Hwy. in 1973 with our then collection of 8 track tapes, guitar, flute, sax, and we sang all the way to California and back. (We married on Feb. 14th btw) My education into jazz began also, though we both loved the rock of our times, or course. We saw some of the best rock, jazz of the 70s in concerts, and I have had a lifetime love of music ever since. Keep on discovering the greatest decades of rock, my friends.

Two of the great jazz artists of their time. I wish there were more vids with sufficient views to meet your requirements for review. that are jazz oriented. Jazz was an acquired taste for me. It happened when I attended Berklee College of Music in the early eighties. I have an old friend from those days (we also came from the same county in our state ) who went to school at the same time that I did who is a world class jazz pianist. Maybe one day you can review his music....

I'm glad this was composed in the 1930s (and this particular recording made in 1958). Gershwin wouldn't have a chance today, being accused of cultural appropriation and a stereotypical depiction of African American culture. Wokes would probably cancel Ella and Louis as "traitors", too. Maybe "Porgy and Bess" really was all of that, but once it starts playing, it's sublime! And Ella is on a league of her own. Whenever she opened her mouth, the harmonies of the heavenly spheres started flowing out of it. She was never anything less than PERFECT!

This is a very moving song for me. The original play was based on a early 20th century book by a Mr Dubois set in the DeepnSouth . To get the atmosphere right George Gersgwin went there and took a long stay living with the community there. This informed his composition . It was not as well liked as some of his other shows but has since been recognised as one of the great American works. Another good one from is ,"It Aint t necessarily so ' where hustler Sporting Life scandalised the Sunday School picnic by singing "The things you are liable to read in the Bible, it ain't necessarily so. I fully understand and support the voices who would know, who say P&B is ultimately a problematically racist enterprise. Both Belafonte and Poitier turned down the lead role despite the potential payoff for them. (Poitier did it eventually to protect his appearance in the classic Defiant Ones, my favorite role of his so I selfishly am glad for it. He regretted if not his choice the situation that forced it.) But man that’s some piece of songwriting, and I saw the all-Black Houston Grand Opera perform it proudly and true, and it was magnificence personified.

so had to be sneaky. My brother's were given their own portable record player, like the ones making a comeback now to play their Elvis records, Ricky Nelson, but nothing more modern or rock n roll. I would sing to Elvis music, having a good ear and picked up words easily. so, it was not a surprise that as soon as I could I wanted out. Music was my way to soothe myself, and I had a younger sister to protect from
abuse, but when I was 16 I had friends who practiced in a church across the street from us, and my friend in high school and I would sit outside in summer and listen to them. They were just graduated, themselves, and one day I met a new player in their band who played several instruments. I was quite shy, so was he when it came to girls, but it was Devine intervention that I would meet and marry this talented Sax player and music was in our lives, together. We drove down the Coast Hwy. in 1973
with our then collection of 8 track tapes, guitar, flute, sax, and we sang all the way to California and back. (We married on Feb. 14th btw)
My education into jazz began also, though we both loved the rock of our times, or course. We saw some of the best rock, jazz of the 70s in concerts, and I have had a lifetime love of music ever since. Keep on discovering the greatest decades of rock, my friends.
Some forget how innovative and powerful Satchmo was in his time. And Ella , we’ll what a voice and what expression.

Jazz was an acquired taste for me. It happened when I attended Berklee College of Music in the early eighties.
I have an old friend from those days (we also came from the same county in our state ) who went to school at the same time that I did who is a world class jazz pianist. Maybe one day you can review his music....

Louis Armstrong was one of the most powerful artists of the 20th century, but everyone had to work their ass off to keep up with Ella Fitzgerald.
I'm glad this was composed in the 1930s (and this particular recording made in 1958). Gershwin wouldn't have a chance today, being accused of cultural appropriation and a stereotypical depiction of African American culture. Wokes would probably cancel Ella and Louis as "traitors", too. Maybe "Porgy and Bess" really was all of that, but once it starts playing, it's sublime! And Ella is on a league of her own. Whenever she opened her mouth, the harmonies of the heavenly spheres started flowing out of it. She was never anything less than PERFECT!

This is a very moving song for me. The original play was based on a early 20th century book by a Mr Dubois set in the DeepnSouth . To get the atmosphere right George Gersgwin went there and took a long stay living with the community there. This informed his composition . It was not as well liked as some of his other shows but has since been recognised as one of the great American works. Another good one from is ,"It Aint t necessarily so ' where hustler Sporting Life scandalised the Sunday School picnic by singing "The things you are liable to read in the Bible, it ain't necessarily so. So beautiful - and so many memories. I'm old, and this was old when I was young - but Ella (and this song) was top of the list on my late evening "seduction tapes" LOL....nice way to set the mood, and it still would be today. Just gorgeous.
IIRC, in the original context (i.e., of the opera), the line "Your daddy's rich", etc., is kind of a fantasy.

I fully understand and support the voices who would know, who say P&B is ultimately a problematically racist enterprise. Both Belafonte and Poitier turned down the lead role despite the potential payoff for them. (Poitier did it eventually to protect his appearance in the classic Defiant Ones, my favorite role of his so I selfishly am glad for it. He regretted if not his choice the situation that forced it.) But man that’s some piece of songwriting, and I saw the all-Black Houston Grand Opera perform it proudly and true, and it was magnificence personified.
