It’s all started when Khris Middleton started getting hurt. It caused Jrue to get elevated to a higher scoring option, exposing his flaws and it made him seem more expendable to the Bucks FO. They should’ve traded Khris in addition to Jrue if they were gonna bring Dame in bc they essentially tried to plug Dame into Jrue’s role. They need to facelift that roster around Dame and Giannis.
@ I agree that the optics on that series were terrible, but Miami smoked Boston that same postseason who was fully healthy unlike MIL was. Those guys in the FO are paid millions to see players/situations for what they are separate from the heat of the moment, no pun intended lol. Despite that performance, Jrue is an all timer on the defensive end, and remains the best defender at the position which has become a rarity while also being a 40% 3pt shooter. If you bring in Dame, you have to go get a guy like Caruso who can offset that defensive gap while Dame increases the offensive firepower. There’s a huge lack of athleticism, shooting and youth on this team that has come to a head, 3 things that become more apparent when you trade away the best on ball defender in the league without recourse.
@@Hoodie-HasThe Celtics getting him for cheap made it even worse. To OP, they wouldn’t get much for Khris anyway so trading him would be a negligible difference. No young players and a core that is aged and sacrificed everything they had for a player that was meant to be a floor raiser. Coaching wise, Doc hasn’t been great in this era. This team looks awfully like the late 00’s Cavs.
Jrue didn’t get “exposed”, the Bucks front office just didn’t understand what they had and gave him away, that trade was egregious considering the fact that Lillard was the ONLY thing they got
They fired bud the same year his brother died in the playoffs. Ridiculous. It wasn’t him. The bucks blew it and Gianni’s was hurt most of the time. I think ownership bought into the narrative that series cause jrue was getting cooked by butler. Maybe they couldn’t move Middleton…but dame with jrue would have been a lot better
everything revolves around making giannis happy in order to try to keep him (it won't) and we know often letting a star hold your team hostage works (rarely if ever, the lakers mickey mouse championship excepted--if you even want to count that)
I am so glad someone else has pointed out the drafting and player development. It's been ass for years. I still haven't forgiven them on the Divincenzo trade. Looking like another 50 years till the next title!
Giannis doesn’t hire the coach. A competent organisation listens to the input of the star player, makes a choice, and then convinces the star player to believe in their vision. It’s why all the ‘LeGM’ shit was so annoying. Lebron was that way because Gilbert is a fucking moron and Lebron never believed in what they had going on. He ‘tried to get rid’ of Spo as well and Reilly looked him off and convinced them to buy in.
Nobody is mentioning the fact that Giannis led the movement to hire AND fire Adrian griffin as well as the Jrue trade. He made his bed now he has to deal with it.
A competent organisation convinces their star player to buy into the vision. If Giannis is advocating for dumb shit it’s on the org to counterbalance it and sell him on something superior.
The thing that doesn’t get brought up near enough is that Mike Budenholzer may be one of the most unfairly shit talked figures going around. He took over the Bucks, won them 50+ games in every season he coached, got fired because Giannis got injured and Jimmy Butler went Super Saiyan for two weeks. Bud obviously has issues coaching playoff series, but he’s a top 5 basketball coach who ensures that you make the playoffs with a good seed every year, and it gets way undervalued in lazy media narratives
Brook Lopez for sure he’s BEEN getting old, and maybe Middleton just the issue is he’s always hurt now so it would be hard to get any value for him he’s just a negative contract. It’s just crazy they traded Jrue and picks for dame when they already traded a bunch of picks to get him in the first place
Doc Rivers has been coasting on carrying a bad Orlando team to a .500 record in '99-2000. That's what earned him his COTY and later the Celtics job. Then the first superteam in league history carried him to a championship. His tenure with Boston should be looked at as a minor failure considering that team should have won at least two championships. From there it's just been let down after let down, blown series lead after blown series lead. AKA Doc Rivers was always an overrated coach. How he's still getting jobs is astounding.
I think what this season so far is exposing, is the Giannis might be a bit of a diva. He keeps talking about wanting to win and potential trades so as to scare the front office into doing something, the front office does something. He doesn’t like it and continues to talk like he wants out. Not to mention the Gianni’s Dame pair should work, if Dame is the one leading the office but for whatever reason Gianni’s won’t adapt to that. Like a Gianni’s Dame pick and roll should be dealt but Gianni’s doesn’t set screens that often and would rather just ask for the ball and barrel to the rim. Like there has to be better strategy and I get that Doc rivers is not good, but Giannis Dame should know better but they don’t somehow? As for Doc Rivers, everyone knew that was a bad move. But in also wondering who was available that they could bring in? Aside from the coaches Milwaukee already fired. Probably not much. They really should’ve gutted out the last season.
i think giannis tend to follow the coaches plans and strategies to a fault. i remember in 2021 as the dpoy people were questioning why he is not defending jimmy butler but rather playing help defense, and his response was that he just follows what mike budenholzer wanted. I am not saying its right or wrong but this has been a thing.
this is on giannis. His faliure to expand his game has a ceiling ultimately. His faliure to expand in the pick n roll game. This team is old on top of that. They panicked with the first round exits. they dont have enough shooting, they pushed all their chips in on the table on the dame trade. Lost their perimeter defense. Lost their identity.
The Bucks looked cooked vs the Suns in those Finals. They owe that chip to a historically collapse-prone Suns team and an extraterrestrial level of performance from Giannis. Bit of a fluke. Not totally. Just flukey.
I have some energy for Giannis. He got Griffin fired, got Doc hired (implied Giannis consent). He made the team trade for Lillard. Like...this is his bed. He has a significant share of the blame IMO
One thing I've been preaching for post-2021 championship is for Giannis to go for a second DPOY. It's good for his personal legacy as he differentiates his resume from bigs like KG and Hakeem. Imo it's also good for this Bucks team who is now terrible on defense and is lacking identity. That might mean he becomes more of a 1B on offense to Dame, but I think the trade off is worth it.
Jimmy Haslett getting a piece of the Bucks ownership started the bad juju that created the domino effect of doing the Lillard/Holiday trade and all the awful coaching choices the past few years.
Great video man, didn’t realize how bad the Bucks situation was until I was listening to the Dunkers Spot podcast yesterday. In a similar vein, would love to hear your thoughts on the Nuggets, I’ve tried watching a bit of their basketball and it’s starting to feel like some of those KG wolves teams or smth, sad to see.
Lillard should've left like 2-3 years ago tbh, sad to see this not working at all but the Bucks have an old, and shallow roster, and their 3rd best player never plays. They should talk with Giannis at the end of the season and find a mutal trade to recoup assets to start over
People keep saying this is on Giannis...... Giannis doesnt run the FO, FOs have to be able to say no to their stars sometimes. So if the FO totally cratered to whatever Giannis wanted the FO is still 100% responsible IMO
They should have won last night. I say that as a cavs fan everything was stacked in their favor AND giannis and dame both went off for 70+. There's some horrifying roster construction going on if you can't win with that
I’ve been mentally preparing myself for this day for a while, pretty much since 2022. I’ve watched this franchise be horrible at drafts, trades, contracts, FA signings and coaching hires for my entire life and it never really changed even after Giannis arrived. The Bucks lucked into Giannis and Khris panning out, and even then the front office did everything in their power to screw the team. Just look at the rosters the Bucks were trotting out dating back to 2018, it was only Giannis, Khris, 1-2 good role players, and nothing else. How can you expect to win while relying on playoff Drew Bledsoe, Ersan Illyasova, a couple washed vets, and some young bums who can’t play. They saw that 2019 collapse and still decided to pay Bledsoe, which of course led to another playoff exit, and because of that terrible contract they had to pay New Orleans out the ass with draft capital to get Jrue Holiday. We were lucky enough that Bobby and PJ were available mid season since we don’t win in 2021 without them. If we hadn’t won in 2021 we probably don’t win at all in the Jrue era due to the injury luck of an old ass roster. Especially since we don’t hit on any draft picks, trade good players for bums, and over pay for more mid. Bud’s time as head coach had definitely run its course. His faults would screw us over at the worst times. Like deciding to never defend 3 pointers, cost us a few series doing that. But the way they fired him was bad, we were already screwed by injuries plus his brother had just died, there was no way we were beating Miami after that. But if they were consistently going to screw up the following hires, they might as well have kept him. We were cooked the moment Haslem bought the team. It’s over now.
bucks perceived themselves to be in trouble with adrian griffin so they took a "safe" gamble on doc but he is notorious for the lack of adjustments and relying on star power. almost 20 years later his single championship is carrying him to more jobs. the finesse is generational and it actually baffles me that front offices continue to bring him in DESPITE WHAT FORMER PLAYERS OF HIS HAVE TO SAY. bucks front office needs to be looked at, kenny atkinson have the cavs rolling (i understand their schedule isnt that tough so far) winning the games they should
No one talks about it, but Giannis is the same player he was in 2019 if not worse. The fact that Giannis throughout his entire career has only figured out how to get bigger and how to spin to get space is sad. You need to learn to shoot or develop some half court offense. He is a big reason of why they are not winning as well. Stagnation is a killer in the NBA, coaches are on your bad habits so you need to evolve. This is why Denver is less effective, this is why the Bucks are less effective. These old teams are stuck in their ways and need an evolution. As a Spurs fan this is where the Spurs were in 2010, old and unevolved. The only way to get back to contention is to change and be different
The value they gave for Dame is insane. No only did they give multiple picks for Dame, but giving away Jrue, who they also gave away multiple picks for, makes the value they paid for Dame be closer to 6 first round picks for a 33 years old who was already looking on the decline. This is one of the worst overpays in the history of the NBA. The cherry on top of that failure is that they could finish out of the playoffs and start giving super valuable picks to other teams (this year its the Nets cashing in, next Pels, then Portland starts taking their drafts). This is terrible and rushed built that proves you can't rush rebuilds in the NBA
