    SHOW NOTES:
We are a better together family of 6 living in an 800sqft Shed to House Conversion and currently converting a 336sqft shed into a tiny house for our new studio! Oh yea and our chickens provide us with fresh, delicious eggs every day, and we'll show you how we care for them and ensure they're happy and healthy. Our family milk cow is an important part of our homesteading lifestyle, providing us with milk that we use to make our own dairy products, like butter and cheese.
Our pastured pigs are raised humanely, and we'll show you how we provide them with a healthy diet and environment that allows them to thrive. We also have a variety of fruit and productive trees that provide us with fresh, organic produce throughout the year.
In addition to our animals and trees, we have a permaculture fishing pond that's an oasis of biodiversity and a source of fresh fish for our family. We'll show you how we built it and how it fits into our overall homesteading strategy.

The old timers would build a barn first then fencing and live in it while they built a shop and storage buildings. Only then did they fence the property in whole. After that they would build a house a well, outbuildings and expanded gardens and Fruit trees. Thats what my grandfather told me when I was young like 8 yrs old.

We bought land in 2020. Did very little besides make a few trails. It was logged out early 1900's. The swamp wasn't logged so it's still old growth. We moved too fast. The 10 acres on Neebish Island I wanted was sold. Then found the piece we bought. Didn't know then I was gonna go organic berry and orchard. It came with 1000's of wild berries. The spring on the property in the fen was one of the reasons we bought. Our county has a great website and information easily found. We hired a forestry manager to look at the property. We can actually build no permit, but I am pulling permits in case we sell. Even put down 2" well by hand. Bank don't consider it a well unless at least 2 inches. We have been camping on land. I am building our cottage by hand. I dug the foundation by hand. Took about 2 days. I decided on a 24x24 skillion cottage post and beam square notched timber frame.

I died when you said “build the barn!” I was nodding along through the whole video cheering the things we did right and agreeing with the mistakes we made but you got a solid “AMEN!” When you said to build the barn. Oh my goodness the places I’ve had to store chicken food and bedding because I didn’t have the proper storage. 😂 We are clearing the spot now for our barn and it will be a blessed day when we have that to use. Great points-every single one of them

    Idea that worked..
Find an area or zone you want to move.
Find a real estate lawyer and have the county tax records checked.
You will be amazed how many parcels are owned by the tax collectors by default.
Some with existing structures and homes.
When purchasing, you pay off back taxes plus some closing costs.
That lawyer can also check foreclosures.
I wondered watching you build that home. You could build off and move studio..
    Thanks for sharing

Thank you Beau for this highly informative video! I have been working on the how to buy land aspect of my preparedness/homestead plan for a few years now and I’ve thought about many of the things I’d like to do. This video is incredibly helpful because I can see where I would’ve made some of the exact mistakes that you talked about 😂 It’s great to be able to learn things like this from those that’ve been there BEFORE I make my decisions.

Interesting that on Elegment's website, only one of the 55 listings under "agricultural land" was not stamped as, "SOLD".

    • @BetterTogetherLife

Well I believe they are always adding. And you can "homestead" on land that isn't listed as "agricultural".

Any resources in Florida? And what is the minimum monthly income needed to survive?

    • @BetterTogetherLife
      @BetterTogetherLife  ปีที่แล้ว

Great question. We aren’t in FL, so you’d have to ask around about resources. But when it comes to knowing an amount per month to live off of, consider your expenses. Then decide what you need for projects to help develop your property and determine how much you want to have saved as a cushion. Each person will have unique needs. So get this down on paper and take your time.

Florida land is 5-10x more expensive than most of the states. It's also wetlands throughout most of the state, so good land is $$$$$
If you don't make a minimum of about 4k a month per person, good luck here.
The soil is sand. The seasons are wacky. Summer is when most don't plant or grow much. It's too hot, and the rainy season kills almost everything with fungus or pest pressure.
Then there's the notsees. Yes, I misspelled that on purpose. But they're here, and there's a lot of them.
The diverse communities are the only benefit here. That, and the ocean. But if you're close to that, add more $$$$.
Also, with what our governor just did to the undocumented here, people will be lucky to find any good properties because corporations will swoop in and buy them up soon to "rescue floridians" and blame the migrant workers for that, too.
I've been here 10 years. I'm leaving in November. I refuse to add my hard earned money towards the discriminatory practices being done to the people that work the hardest here any longer.

Texas is too unsafe for anyone other than men though. I would never live there as a woman. It's sad so many 'freedom loving' states want to revoke so many of its citizens actual freedoms. Freedom to do what you want on your land isn't enough if you don't have any other freedoms. I'd be terrified to try and start a family there. It's sad what is happening across this country. The places I want to live are being turned into places it is unsafe to live as a woman. I hate how we are losing all of our freedoms in what is supposed to be the best country in the world to live in. As someone who wants to homestead, just finding a state to do it in has become so much harder than it should be due to all that is going on in this country. 😢

      @BetterTogetherLife  ปีที่แล้ว

Hey Kelly! It’s Kelly B. I just saw these and can totally see that you’re concerned. We’ve been in Texas a while, so I just wanted to see if I could be helpful. What freedoms are you afraid of not having?

Yea, that is very much a false concern. Texas is fantastic. Great place to live and to raise a family!!

@Better Together Homestead I have to respectfully disagree. It's far too far right for my tastes. There are so many horrible laws being put into place. I'm well past my childbearing days, but I have children that are entering them, and with the way the R party is going, I would never wish them to live there. If a pregnancy isn't viable or there are complications, they want to charge the woman or delay necessary care. As a healthcare worker, it is a nightmare for patients and providers.
Then there are the rest of the rights they're stripping from women, the LGBTQ+ community, etc. It's horrible to see how they really see us as 2nd class citizens and breed stock.
And then there is the religious nonsense they're pushing in schools. That should be something between parents and their children to decide. It should not be forced upon children. That is indoctrination. But they want to ban books because they're 'woke'. Aka informed.
Anyway, I didn't mean to get political, but you asked, and those are my reasons, to name a few.
If you're not a part of the R party, there's no place for you in their country. The left-leaning want to be inclusive to all, to accept, to educate, and to progress. Texas wants to dig in its heels and go backward in time. Then there's the shootings.
I'm seriously considering leaving this country because it is no longer a country I can be proud to call home.

@Better Together Homestead I believe they meant the part where you said, "You can't just ride out and claim land. Those days are over." Meaning colonization.
