My wife and I had planned to visit in September. We live in Denmark not the UK, so the British media has not affected our decision. But the fact of so many people on the street demonstrating against holiday makers has made us change our minds about us visiting. It’s is simple we do not feel comfortable or safe visiting were so many don’t want us.

The impact of these protests will be felt next year… A large percentage of those on holiday now and those coming out this year have already booked and paid in full prior to the protests… it’s virtually impossible to make last minute changes to a booking without further costs, but I bet they are already thinking of somewhere else to go next year…

How can you say the media has blown the protests out of all proportion. All the news showed was the Palma protest, which had thousands of people attend. This level of disaffection with tourism will obviously make tourists think twice. It really didn't need any extra hype from the media, just look at the pictures.

The Daily Express have ran an article every single day, with the same regurgitated comments, just winding people up. They are making out it's a daily occurrence specifically targeting British tourists. The comments that follow are then just lots of people complaing that British tourists are yobs and drunks. It's all nonsense. The more extreme placards likely from the ret a mob protesters, just like we get in cities in the UK every week.

The Locals do have a right to protest democratically about their jobs and housing and livelihood .I've booked for September .However; if we did this in the UK with people coming buying property legally or illegally , we in Britain would be classed as racists by the media and the rest of Europe !. keep up the good work , the Spanish have a lot to put up with drunken brits and lets not forget others ; Germans and Russians and Americans too!

I can fully understand the feelings of the protesters. It is not a problem just confined to Mallorca many areas of England like Cornwall for instance the local community has been pushed out of the property market, it realy is a sad state of affairs, I feel so sorry for allot of the young, in many parts of the world being affected by this growing problem... A lot of this is down to the greed of governments, the wealthy and the entitled holiday maker who think they can do what they want on this beautiful island.

We are so disappointed with Mallorca at the moment. We have been going to Santa Ponsa for the last 25 years. The last 6 years have been at the Senses hotel after it re opened. It was a fantastic adults only hotel. We went in May this year and supposed to have gone again in October. I’ve now cancelled that trip. Apart from how poor the hotel is now, Santa Ponsa was empty. Used to be lots of entertainment etc. when I jokingly asked a local where all the tourists were, he replied that they are staying away and thank god for that. So. I think it’s about time we tried the Algarve. I work hard for a living and enjoy my holidays. I’ll give my money to a welcoming country from now on.

I don't do resort holidays but my wife and I love city breaks. Palma and Malaga are two of our favourites. We have been there numerous times and spend a lot of money in the shops, bars and restaurants. Sadly, these are the places where the protests are targeted. Having watched the protests, it is clear that the local people do not want tourists in their cities. I understand why and that's fair enough. We'll just go elsewhere.

Hello Alex, I have been following these recent developments with some interest.
I think a little history may be relevant here. Spain and the Balearics emerged from under the yolk of Franco around '73 with effectively no economy. By late '70's tour operators and airlines like DanAir were already opening up Spain, when we first arrived to open arms. Buy '86 they had joined the EEC and tourisim really took off. This has been the bread and butter of the island ever since [ supplanting goats, olives and fish😊] A few astute local families realised these opertunities and started buying up large tracts of land, along with us, the Germans and other Northen Europeans.
The root cause I believe of these issues is in fact that Majorca is literally an "island paradise", and the land will, and remain, enomously valuable to the wealthy. How we fix this will be difficult, but focusing on tourists themselves is pointless. The issue of affordable housing is not unique to this island, just look at our own issues in Uk!, and infact rife thoughout all EU countries.
The universal rules of law, supply and demand, and rights of ownership are at play and only the Balearic government can enforce a building program of affordable housing and subsidised rent for residence status. Lest we forget that most "established" local families enjoy the highest standard of living in all of Spain and most wealthy mainland Spainish have holiday homes there.
I agree with you that these protests are superficially shooting themselves in the foot but the issues they face is not fundamentally different than the rest of us.
None of this will prevent me from vacationing there as always.
Yours, Mr. In Love With Majorca.

We have literally just arrived home from a wonderful stay in Palma Nova, we managed to visit Palma and other surrounding areas. We can honestly say that we were embraced by every local we met. We stayed self catering among locals and shared the poolside with them and they were all kind and welcoming to us. We made a point to eat out and support restaurants outwith Palma Nova as well as within. We enjoyed time on the beach as well as embrace the culture of the island. We used the local bus to get around and where even offered to swap seats with a resident so we could sit together on the bus. Honestly do sympathise with the struggle they are experiencing in not being able to afford housing, in the 1970s block we visited a 1 bedroom apartment currently for sale at €275,000. I hope that the government can come up with a solution to help locals buy affordable housing soon.

As a frequent visitor to Mallorca I will only say that the protesters need to change the wording on their banners to actually mean what they want, tourists bring money in and boost Mallorca's economy, the banners should read no to Holiday homes and better living wages for the people that live here... Mean what they are trying to say otherwise they're going to drive people away and the economy will go down

We have just arrived home on Sunday 21st July 24 from Alcúdia. It was amazing. There was only one restaurant where we felt a little unwanted but this could have been a misunderstanding.
In regard to the football, it was a great atmosphere and no one rubbed anything in anyone’s faces, it really was a safe space to be in. Myself and my 13 year old son walked the strip, eating an ice cream as Spain scored.
We are looking to come back again next year at either Santa Ponsa or Palma Nova.
I love this island and gutted that the majority of the EU voted to leave as I would love to live there.

Agree. Have been a regular visitor to Mallorca for last ten years or so, one or two trips a year for early season cycling and a summer break too. Since covid the cost of the hotel has increased by €1000 year on year. Combined with local Ryanair flights now costing £800 for two, return flights. Have a trip planned in September and will enjoy it, protests or not. But it might be the last.

I have travelled around the world many times. I’ve lived in the Middle East and Australia.
I’ve been all over SE Asia inc Cambodia, Thailand, Viet Nam, Sri Lanka and India, America, Africa and most of Europe, particularly Italy - which I love !
There’s not many places I haven’t been to, or visited, and there are certainly enough exotic places to visit in this world without going against the wishes of a few upset Spaniards.
So I won’t be going anywhere near Spain in the future, which will keep both them, and I happy

They deserve affordable housing more than developers or wealthy property owners deserve to buy for Air bnb or rental markets.
Holiday makers can help by choosing hotel accommodation rather than Air bnb’s. As holidaymakers we need to be part of the solution.

The people who say "We will take our money where we are welcome" are very Naive. I see the same comments where I live in Yorkshire from people who read social media posts by disgruntled locals about excessive tourism here.
I always think to myself "They are going to have a lifelong search for a place where every person there welcomes them". There is no such place.
There are also people who say "If we didn't spend money in your community you would all be poor", yet they don't understand the Irony of their comments to people being paid a minimum wage or less and unable to buy a home or afford to pay rent in the town they and their ancestors were born in.
Tourism and in particular, "Over-tourism" is only beneficial to millionaire business owners and multi national hotel chains and travel companies.

Hi Alex, I love your videos and Mallorca. I think those who are cancelling their holidays based on what the media here in Britain are telling should look closer to home. If they stopped to think about it realistically the very same problem is happening here. I live very close to the coast in Yorkshire and many of the houses in the coastal villages are holiday lets, and second homes which forces the local people away as they cannot afford the prices.
This situation isn’t exclusive to the coast either is happening in the villages of the dales and moors.
Unfortunately the likes of Sky and GB News do not cover this, so those who are cancelling their holidays need to realise this and have some sympathy with those who are protesting in Palma as the same protests could be happening in Britain shortly.

Watch Steve and Anita's video on the protest as he had interesting comments (like them wanting more industy on the island), as well as the Spain Revealed video on the Mainland protests (How banning Airbnbs won't put property back into the long-term rental market). I've said above, the narrative I've now heard from that protest is the same as that from the Canaries and the Mainland. I guess there's a lot you can complain about when you use the phrase 'Sustainable Tourism'. Let's hope the government crackdown on Airbnbs, illegal rentals, use make use of empty properties, not sure what they'll do about the wages and cost of living though!

This is my humble solution. They need to stop building. Stop building hotels, restaurants, Ban airBNB’s entirely (which would help with the costs of rentals with us the locals.) By doing this they would reach capacity. Driving tourism away is not the answer. the answer is to come up with real viable solutions. The key in my mind is limited the working capacity and by doing so you control the tourism.

This is about corruption, as usual, working class people are being ripped off by their own and have been fed a lie about air bnb's being to blame which just isn't true. What you're failing to mention is that people don't just stay in the resorts, Palma is a magnet for day trippers so there is no way I'd go there with my family.
