Tamiya DT01 Fighter Buggy RX vs Rising Fighter Track Run Comparison - Hopper vs Hopper!

  • Hello friends! In this video we take the Tamiya DT-01 Fighter Buggy RX Memorial and run it around the same track as we ran the Tamiya Rising Fighter a couple of weeks ago. The idea was to get a feel for the DT-01 around the track and compare the running and handling to the Rising Fighter. Both RC buggies share a similar chassis design, with swing-arm front suspension and a rigid rear axle and motor assembly - commonly referred to as "Hoppers" due to their similarity with the Tamiya Grasshopper, and also their tendency to "hop" the rear end up and down over the bumps!
    You will hear commentary on both buggies from me, and I have included some of the Rising Fighter footage as a direct lap comparison - Plus - I timed the laps! Which Tamiya RC buggy is fastest?
    The Fighter Buggy RX Memorial is totally stock apart from bearings.
    The Rising Fighter is heavily modified, including bearings, oil shocks, a gearbox brace, Narrow ribbed front wheels + tyres and a faster 21 turn Absima Eco Thrust motor.
    Many thanks to my good friend, Rob, @Rob Brennan RC - for the filming and additional comments in this video.

    Hiya matey. Good to see you chaps out having some RC related fun. The Fighter buggy does look like it has pretty decent handling for a hopper. Looks better than my Hornet for sure. Also they did a great job on the looks of that memorial edition too. Anyway I hope your Friday is shaping up ok. I've just got a beer on the go and there is a takeaway ordered so all good. Just sorting out a video to put up tomorrow. Best wishes to you for a smashing weekend. Cheers for now 😁

      Hello Pete me mukka! Yeah, it was one of those spur of the moment things when Rob and I were playing at the park, I just threw the camera at him and said " let's film this doing a few laps". Came out OK , considering! I genuinely do enjoy driving the RX, it's better than it should be!!! Friday was OK, ta, just that I'm feeling very tired again these days - must be the warm weather! Going to look at your new vid now - if you don't see my comment, you'll know why! Cheers, matey! 👍😎

    Rising Fighter - I've put in oil shocks, the Eco Thrust 21 turn motor, the trans brace and front tower support that you two fellas have recommended. And it's still the silliest handling car in my fleet. But I have a soft spot for it, and I've thought about decommissioning it... But I can't. The Holiday Buggy on a DT01 is so much more competent. As is the Neo Fighter on the DT03 (but does have some understeer that I'm hoping a lump of lead at the front will improve). I've just run my Lunchbox for the first time today (down by the Dusty Trees!) On a standard silver can it was tame. The Eco Thrust 15 turn was overheating. The Eco 21 turn was the sweet spot. I could do some drifts. Though, in a drift, if I applied more throttle the Lunchie straighten up. After running two batteries through it I was getting the hang. What a hobby, learning the different handling of 2WD and 4WD and, in top of tgat, getting to grips with the handling of different chassis. I'm sure this pleasure isn't apparent to an observer, but when you're in control, it's tangible and real. I'm still having a blast!!! Thanks for this comparison. The memorial kit was very tempting at Time Tunnel when I saw it a while back.

      Hiya, Lee! Sounds like your RF is very similar to mine, and I completely agree, the silliest handling car ever (great choice of adjectives!) But yeah, still makes me smile, and that's what it's all about for me. Yes, the Lunchie is underwhelming with a silver can, needs a power boost! Cool you found the sweet spot. If at first you don't succeed... :D
      Yeah, great thing about the hobby, trying the different drive configurations and learning how to drive them. Sure, to a bystander it won't be apparent, but I know how different they feel! You really spoke from the heart about this experience, I can tell! You really got the RC bug like me! Great comment mate - have a great weekend! 😎👍

    Hi Mark, yeah even before the timings came up on screen you could see the DT-02 was a lot more stable and ground hugging. Maybe because the chassis is lower to the ground it helps this. Having said that - as you pointed out in the video, the Memorial still maintains those 'hoppy' characteristics. Probably a good thing as it just makes driving these sweet buggies all the more fun. I've said it before, there is just something beautiful about hearing the squeal of a Tamiya motor / gearbox combo. So distinctive. Great stuff..😁, and have a great weekend - it's gonna be a hot one.......allegedly...👍🏻👍🏻.

      Hiya mate! Yes, I thought you would tell the difference just by eye! The RX just feels faster in all situations, except for tarmac running! just shows how much better the DT-01 chassis is than the Rising Fighter. I agree about the characteristics being part of the charm, and I too love hearing it blasting past at full throttle! You were right about the weather, we are melting here in the Midlands! Hi Mark and Our Rob, i suppose the pull for these types of rc’s is the 🥰 cuteness and comical nature of their driving style, the Grasshopper really is aptly named, what with all it’s hopping around whatever surface it happens to be driving on, lololol but it does give you a happy feeling when driving it. Thanks, Bro! Yeah, in a 20 second lap, 4 seconds is an eternity. Good test, Mark & Rob. Not surprised of the difference but I think it has little to do with the chassis and front arms (Grasshopper II versus DT-01). Pretty much the same system, although the battery placement on the DT-01 might make it more stable (or?). And the Rising Fighter got the same DT-01 gear box and if you fitted the Ampro trans brace they both should be stabilized the same way. I think the mounting position of the gear box (and maybe the shocks do the difference). I lowered my gear box on the Rising Fighter (with the Ampro 'Super Hornet' inspired shock mounts), got rid of the stock RF "friction shocks", - making it almost as low as on a DT-01 and it made a tremendous difference. On tarmac it would flip and roll over every second with the stock position. With the new position it's much more stable and feels quite "DT-01"ish. I think I have an old 'before and after' montage of the stock RF versus the upgraded RF on tarmac on my channel that should support your findings. But I can't remember, didn't you and Rob change the setting of the gear box and shocks on your RF's as well? Looking at the video here, the RF still rides quite high in the rear, like the stock setting? Well, it was fun to see a video where the unit with the shocks more horisontal than vertical, won your heart :-) First time. I know you like your shocks as upright and free-moving as possible .... uhh, sorry about the looong and nerdy Hopper-comment, Mark. Wishing you a pleasant evening.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi mate! I always enjoy a looooong and nerdy comment from you! I think the battery position in the DT-01 does help somewhat with the weight being right over the gearbox pivot. But yes, I clearly remember your Rising Fighter (RF) mods as I watched the videos very carefully! And I remember our conversations about them. Yeah, lowering the rear would definitely help with handling, reducing both the ride height (hence C-of-G) and the amount of bouncy suspension travel available. Agreed, I like an upright shock, and my RF is too high at the back, I can see now. Yeah, I did make my own brace for the RF, very much like the Ampro solution. Need shorter shocks I think, some future tweaking will be done! But the Dt-01 works better even with the almost horizontal shocks, as you say, because it is lower and has less "kick" from the shocks. I really did enjoy the drive, and it looks so cool, too! Wishing you a lovely evening tonight, my mate! :o)

It's a fun buggy for sure but it handles like a skittish kitten. 😁 It's cheap and it's fun so you can forgive it for its weaknesses. Hi Mark, nice to see the dynamic duo out and about on a nice sunny day in Brom! As usual Rob doing a fantastic job on camera. The Fighter RX definitely has the edge over the Rising Fighter, both really working hard over that rough terrain. That rear end looks almost like the Hornet, if I’m not mistaken? I’m sure back in the 80’s when I had a Hornet, that too had the sliding rear gearbox that pivots under power, with springs to tension the load( that’s if my memory serves me correctly or course, going back some years ). Great comparison of these budget RC’s, still so great fun to be had on a tighter purse! Good video of the master in control 😁😉👌take care my friend, hope all is well. 👌👍

Chainring the tyres will correct the understeer , I run Schumacher racing tyres on mine and although I run it in shorter grass they are grass tyres , where ribs on the front are for dirt sand etc. They hop less than the others but the rear gearbox sits low to the ground so if you it a bump it will still pitch the buggy. Hi mark, are you on messenger or something, I would like for you to build a couple of kits for me, a tt01e and a lunchbox, oh and paint a cockpit, and maybe a Renault 5 turbo body, I'd be happy to pay you for doing this. Please let me know if you can.
    Mike
