  • Jumbo hut is a serviced 20-bunk hut in the eastern Tararua Ranges. Its a popular overnight stay for people tramping the Holdsworth-Jumbo circuit and it has some incredible views over the Wairarapa region. It comes with most features you'd expect including 3 gas cookers, 2 longdrops and roof-filled water tanks. Built in 1982 it replaced the old Angle Knob hut which was located a kilometre north-west down an exposed spur, until screaming winds ripped it from its piles and sent it flying 200 metres down the mountain. Jumbo hut is located below Jumbo peak on a less exposed spur and it has been renovated and extended many times over the years. Today the hut is definitely quite dated, especially when compared to the brand new Powell hut a few kilometres south. But unlike Powell hut, Jumbo hut has retained its classic backcountry charm and character. It has a rustic and retro feel to it which makes it more interesting and leaves a lasting impression. Its also cozy and communal and overall a very awesome hut.

"Huts of New Zealand" is a new video series I'm creating, in which I travel to backcountry huts all around NZ to record, review and rate my experiences to give you a better idea of what to expect when you go hiking around our beautiful country.

A mate, could you use the word 'Tramping' not 'hiking' . It's sad how our culture is changing using 'Americanisms' . We have tramping clubs not hiking clubs. Cheers.

      I use them both interchangeably
