Just as an FYI for those who are wondering, this show was one of the fiddlers last shows with the band due to an unknown illness. Stuart is a great fiddler, but he was tired and in pain. So, yes, please give him a chance.
I am a performing Irish Ballad singer this past 23 years and I agree that this is the best version I have heard. Great song. I did support gigs to The Dubliners and The Wolfe Tones and Just last weekend I did the Barrowlands in Glasgow with The Tones in front of 2000 people , best gig of my life.
Best version of this song I've ever heard. That's what makes folk songs so wonderful. No one owns the rights to them. That's why most of the christmas songs are free reign, the Irish folk tunes like Suil A Run and Raggle Taggle Gypsys and Caledonia and Danny Boy those no one owns and no copyright infringement. That is what I love.
There were three auld gypsies came to our hall door, They came brave and boldly-o! And-a one sang high and the other sang low, The other sang a raggle-taggle gypsy-o It was upstairs downstairs the ladies went, Put on her suit of leather-o! And there was a cry, up around the door, "She's away with the raggle-taggle gypsy-o!" It was late that night when the lord came in, Inquirin' for his lady-o! And the servant girl, she says to the lord, "She's away with the raggle-taggle gypsy-o" Oh saddle for me my milk-white steed, My big horse is-a-not speedy-o! I'll ride 'til I seek my bride Who's away with the raggle-taggle gypsy-o! (yyYEEEH) And he rode east and he rode west, He rode north and south also! Until he came, to the wide open plain, There that he spied his lady-o Tell me how could you leave your goose-feather bed? Your blankets drewn so comely-o? How could you leave your newly-wedded lord, All for the raggle-taggle gypsy-o? "Arra what care have I for a goose-feather bed? My blankets drewn so comely-o? Tonight I'll lie in a wide-open field in the arms of a raggle-taggle gypsy-o" [EPIC tin whistle solo] HEY!!!!!!! How could you leave a house and your land? How could you leave your money-o? How could you leave your newly-wedded lord, All for the raggle-taggle gypsy-o? (x3 with an "ARGH!!!" after the second round) "ARRA what care have I for a goose-feather bed? My blankets drewn so comely-o? I'd rather have a kiss, from the yellow gypsy lips In the arms of a raggle-taggle gypsy-o" HEEEY!!!!!!
Im from scotland but a regular performer and visitor at the dungloe festival, loved these guys there, the last year i saw them there was the year their bus got stuck out in the sands and the tide came in!!!
BRILLIANT!! i have scoured youtube and video.google for a better version of this song, and am honored to report that it is, by far, the most jamming, best sounding, most talented version in easily accessible existence! Keep up the awesome work. Bloody, Freakin, Incredible! (btw: for some reason it really helps with the break-up blues)
Mad Dog are awsome. So lucky that they are my cities little treasure. If you guys ever can go to thier gigs! My word I have never danced so much. They are awsome sauce live!
We use a number of fiddle players, the one on this video is Stuart Wyatt, current player is Karl Arnold and in the past we have used Seth Lakeman (yes him), Aaron Catlow from Sheenlanagig and on Away with The Fairies the talented Misha Law.
WOW!!! This is wonderful! I have known this song since I was a kid, and it was running through my head, so I googled it and found this video. Thanks for sharing it!
This is definitely my new favorite (non-metal) band! These guys (and gal) are just fun! Really wish they'd come to the St. Louis area - they'd have a huge following in NO TIME!
They are English, from Plymouth with Irish ancestry, they play here all the time often outdoors at Easter or whit outside the magistrates court where they used to put a sheet with the band name obscuring Plymouth Magistrates so the backdrop to the gig would say Maddog Macree Court! I am lucky to live in their home town they are absolutely brilliant live, sound better than on utube, and they are really nice guys they chat with the audience get drunk with everyone and if people are lucky or maybe helped in some way Mike , ( vocalist and last original member) will invite them to go party , ( I always had my kids with me so never was able to help, mostly I see them during afternoon gigs around Plymouth, ) I am sure your town would love them! Why don’t you send them an email invite them? Maybe you could speak to a local venue to book them? In Plymouth they play 200- 2,000 sweeter venues, the gig in spring 2022 at Plymouth pavilion will be amazing, every gig they played here has blown everyone else away, even the Volk festival where they were on early in the afternoon, they had a bigger crowd than the headline act. I met Mike many times over the last 25 years, he is lovely not at all celeb like, when my autistic son ran onto the stage when I went to order food and asked my mate to keep an eye on him Mike asked him to join them, he said who are you storming my stage trying to steal the thunder? My son said I’m Marcus . Hello. Mike Maddog macree said hello ! What’s your favourite song? Jungle book, I wanna be like you oo ooh . Ok can you dance while we play? He tried his best moves bless and the audience were so lovely it’s one of my best memories from my sons childhood. That gig my son and daughter were the only kids, before that they played in bars and that gig was in a bar hard to get to at Plymouth Barbican just round the harbour from where the mayflower sailed. I have so many happy memories watching this band live. I doubt they would have a clue who I am but we ALL know them and the world is so much better for this uplifting happy drunken irish raggletaggle band of brothers. Go hassle them to play your town, I’m pretty sure if yo can help sort a Venue for them to play and can find accommodation or somewhere to park their tour bus they would be happy and probably really really happy that someone across the Atlantic helped them break USA . I reckon they would love Maddog in your town but I think the rest of America would love them too. I swear if they play your town I’m buying tickets and having my next holiday in America! They are worth travelling over the Atlantic to see hear and dance along too! Merry Xmas xxx
Mad Dog are one of my all time fav bands. I've seen them live in and around the Plymouth area so many times I've lost count. Cheers Mike, Dan, Roo and all the others. Take care.
I havent heard this song since my mum sang it to me as a child... and hell that was a while back!!!!! (and clearly she didnt sing it like this)!!.. awesome version made my morning! thanks
Great version of a great song. I've been looking for this ever since I saw the Pirates Adventure show in Mallorca last year. They play a version of this song during the pirates swing sequence.
No that whistle is not a piccolo, sometimes he plays sideways to get the sound hole nearer to the mic, the tin eared engineer has him to low in the mix. It is a six holed tin/penny whistle sometimes called a flageolet, there's posh isn't it?
nah mccrae do it great, the thing is watching it on youtube doesn't really do them justice - see them live with a few pints of guinness and it's spot on. saw them do this last year with a female vocalist - proper good.
LOL, nice. The music scene around here is pretty good, for certain genres. I really wish this particular genre was something that local bands would go for, because I certainly would!
@DarkGallahad I'm sure you did not hear the SCAFELL PIKE version, which is very rare and absolutely the BEST version of this song ever. So unfortunately noone posted it on TH-cam yet. I tell you you, after hearing it, you will reevaluate your opinion. Anyway the second best is the WATERBOYS version !
I've got the newest one. It's a good album, but I really wish I could get Away With the Fairies :( My cousins live near Plymouth so I'm hoping they can send it to me
@levediagyermeke Well brother thanks for the new versions to try and find. Strictly speaking there is no best or worst unless the person singing sounds like shit. Mad Dog McCrea's version is awesome. I like it more than Celtic Thunder and the Chieftains version. I've only heard 4 or 5 versions to date. The worst was this choir singing it..mad was that painful.
I prefer the Waterboys version...This is snappier by Mike of the Waterboys holds the notes longer and flowers better I think. I like this version also though
Who is the lad on the whistle? He is very good, although as usual whistle player too low in the mix, engineers and producers are tubes. Whistle is a lead instrument not just backing or fill. I've yet to meet one that does not have a tin ear, pun intended.
To AnEclecticMusicFan, My sincerest apologies for my incorrect grammar,But my rage and speed blinded my typing skills.i agree with seonidh about the cultured gypies and i repect every tribes traditions and skills, but illegaly entering this country & forcing their kids to beg, polluting our streets does not count as skills in my book,as i said b4 im not a racist, anyone is welcome into any country so long as they make an atempt to work or to educate themselves.saorise

Seems that the Bouzouki player had little troubles at the beginning...
your culture, but you are american, and he is english...
Terrible version!!!
