Of course I was shocked and the kids trembled but we knew we had to behave as naturally as possible so we just continued walking as if he hadn't been there... We were hoping that he would leave our way at some point but he just kept on following our route.

It is on Katmai right? The bears are used to tourists. It's the safest place to watch bear up close. They are more interested in salmon. I wish to visit this place someday. For now I just watch them fishing salmon live on youtube
It's quite possible that the bear was using you as a shield from a nearby male, biologists have noted that some grizzly moms with cubs walk close to area frequented by humans because the know the smell will unnerve adult male bears, which are the main cause of death for cubs, it may also explain why she is constantly glancing back, looking for a predatory male.

I was on a similar trail in Katmai several years ago when a mom and two cubs came close....my friend and I stepped off the trail, into the tall grass, and stood silently while the three bears went on by, not paying any attention to us. It seemed the smartest thing to do rather than continue on down the trail with them behind us.
Yeah, I see you as smarter than this guy. You're supposed to back up and stay still. But I guess this guy chose to be comfortable and not go inside some bushes, instead waiting for the bears to do so (which they never did). 🙂

You obviously forgot the safety session where they tell you to step off the path and give the bears space.
Bears are much much much more likely to attack something with it's back turned to it. That's why he was walking backwards. It obviously worked. It's the same thing with big cats. Much less likely to come at you if they can see you're facing them.

According to the park rangers apparently he did NOT: This is at Brooks camp, that bear is actually well known and called Molly, she is used to human presence and the rules of the campground gives bears the right of way. What he should've done is slowly walk off the trail and let the bears pass.
If only Molly had hd the decency to introduce herself, he would have known that and not bothered walking backwards like an idiot. Thank you for your insight.

It supposedly helps if you make constant low noise so the bears don't have the chance to be startled by any movement of yours they didn't anticipate.

Mhm. Because usually momma isn't too far behind. The young of many species are cute, making it difficult to refrain from approaching. But it usually just ends up causing problems. Feed deer? Attract predators that hunt deer. Approach baby bear? Attract momma bear. Interacting with wildlife gets so sticky. I love the cute videos where humans and wild animals seem to work in harmony, but some of the negative consequences are just heartbreaking.
They were going to the beach, this is Brooks. The man recording the video is a fucktard who ignored the Park's rule, he's suppose to get off the trail as the bears have right of way. If a ranger saw this he would have kicked him outta the camp immediately.

This is bear 435 known as Holly and her cubs that use the trail daily. The sow was on her way to the shore. The man was not following protocol, but decided to continue to walk backward instead of retreating off the trail as instructed jeopardizing the safety not only for himself but for the sow too. If he would have stumbled and fallen it could have spooked the cubs --- upsetting the sow --- turning this into a very dangerous situation. If the sow would have attacked, the sow would have been put down for sure just doing what she does everyday. End of story --- Holly and her cubs made it to the shore --- and this man got his video.

He did just the right thing. He stayed calm, didn't turn his back on them, kept talking softly to keep himself and them calm. If he had turned off they still may have followed him except he wouldn't be headed to the shelter he was using AND could have gotten lost. Usually when people hike alone they let someone know their route and expected time of return or post it on the log at the trail head. If he had taken another route and got injured it would have been harder to find him. If he stepped off the trail and stood still hoping they would pass, the curious cubs would have examined him and any motion of his might have been seen as a possible threat and inspired a warning or attack by mom. I hope I hold it together and take the best course of action as well as he did if I'm ever in a similar situation. Very well done sir !
This video is a slap in the face of Katmai National Park and all the Rangers that do an amazing job keeping everyone safe including the bears. Everyone is sent to Bear School immediately getting off the plane. VISITORS are taught, bears have THE RIGHT OF WAY ALWAYS. This person that shared this video showing his total lack of respect for Katmai and the bears. (by the way he's very lucky this was Holly, one of the sweetest well known bears there) He should be made an example for his ignorance and FINED big. This angers me as I know how hard the Rangers work to keep everyone safe. Katmai National Park is a safe place but there are rules for everyone to follow.

Thanks for your comment which actually adds something to the debate! However, I think anyone can be forgiven for forgetting that advice in a situation like this. It truly would take serious guts and presence of mind to step off the trail and let the bears come closer, if you seem to be doing a good job of keeping them at a reasonable distance. I guess none of use know how we'd react. Anything that isn't curling into a shivering ball on the ground, or running is to be admired in my opinion!

The bears are not very aggressive unless they feel threatened and since it was the peek of summer they were likely pretty full on fish so good job staying calm mate and hope to see you again in this state

other than getting his bear spray ready, he handled this encounter absolutely perfectly.
I've seen an instance where bear spray buys you time, but then the bear is pissed and will find you later at some other point in the woods. If you use bear spray, don't hang around for round two.

A. Never hike alone.
B. Don't camp near a natural food and water source.
C. Always look for signs (tree markings, smells, scat) of apex predator habitation of an area bwfore setting up a camp.
D. Never have food IN a camping area. I wouldn't even cook near where I sleep.
E. Always keep non lethal means of deterrence on your person. (ie bear mace)

It was pretty thick brush. And he's an older guy. It might have been difficult for him to move easily off the path. It would have been risky if he started fumbling around off the path they might have got excited. At least on the path he could move calmly and consistently. I mean chances are if he did they would have just walked by and you're right but if he tripped or if he had trouble moving you never know
I don’t think anyone can argue that he could have done anything better. I’d have ran full sprint while shitting diarrhea out of my asshole, gotten mauled, and died. So I think he did better than most would have.

Bears travel on the trails for the same reason we do; it’s easy walking. Moving out of the bear’s way is the safest action he could have taken. I’ve had similar situations multiple times and simply moving off the trail worked. Bears are generally more interested in finding salmon than stalking a human at Katmai. The man filming should have paid attention in the mandatory safety class at the park
