    tips 6: get a pc that can actually run your designed map. i designed a map with multiple biomes and stuff, but then because my pc is potato, it is now just a massive snowy mountain.

    Regarding the mistake in the first 20 seconds: text adventures (of the parser kind) definitely have maps, which are also usually designed/mocked up on paper first before the areas and their contents are written into the game.

    i been making a Farm Sim 19 map for 1 year now, i restarted the project multiple times, every time a better map, with more details and content.
    It's a map that tries to represent the center - north of my country, Uruguay, it mostly based in the rice farms that are here, i started without knowing nothing, and now, the map is looking like real life, every day is getting better with new content even to the game.
    it's a 64km2 map and with your tips it will improve a lot more!.
    btw it's the first map about my country for the game, hope one day i release it!.

      @BenderWaffles  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Jonaelize I actually have a lot of example maps on my channel already (The "Speed Development" series) and a couple mapping tutorials as part of my RPG Maker tutorial series. Wouldn't have hurt to include something here though you are correct. :)

      While I like your Speed Development series, I would like it more, if you were talking in those videos instead of playing music. You know, explaining the reasoning behind how and why you mapped it this way. This is why I like your Critical Development series.

    I can appreciate the short video. I'd add the following from the top of my head:
    * have chill and intense zones with reward in mind (fighting / protected zones) so players can go between them and have that relief feeling when they are safe, for example you could have a big treasure chest in an area where a boss is, to reach the boss you need to fight some enemies that get stronger and stronger, after you loot the chest the enemies shouldn't respawn on you
    * make point of interest locations visible from afar, somewhere in the distant, blurred if possible (the mountain you must pass through, a tower with the end boss, the doomed castle up on the biggest hill you can make, or have stuff happening deeper and deeper in a valley from which the player can see as he starts on the top of a mountain)
    * have path guiding elements: signs, roads, torches lighting the way - the player is more likely to follow these than wander around aimlessly, and if he does, add thick forest and brush to deter him

    I ended up here because I want to learn how to level design landscapes with an emphasis on a topological but logistically sound routing through it. A lot of openest world type games have redundant dead space in them that can technically serve as travel wastes, but I want to sort of avoid that unless it's becoming of the set pieced area/environment, and not have it be a transitive property for the whole world I want to build. Your first point I feel is the strongest towards that, because my imaged memory of certain places I have experienced have certainly inspired me a great deal in idealizing the vertical harmony I want to achieve. Not to say I haven't seen this in a game before, but it is exceptionally rare to find, and is usually through layers of abstraction such as a mod, or fanmade level, stuff like that. Older games that have to use simple geometry in order to -fill- feel* large and grand are the highest volume of success in that category, so I am finding it hopeful I can probably both get into this, and perhaps even stick with it.

    Another tip is to have people test play your levels. Hand them the controller and ask them to verbalize their thoughts. Only explain the basic controls. Don’t tell them anything while they play. Observe their behavior in the level and take notes.

    I was expecting some examples of tiled maps (whether it'd be platformers or adventure games with a topdown view) and the reasoning behind their design (usually in a show-don't-tell way). Out of the 5 tips, I found 3 of them a little vague. I liked the tip of using real world references and making it as non-linear as possible though.

    Do you have any tips on how would a top down real time strategy horror game should be?

    • @BenderWaffles
      @BenderWaffles  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, that is a hell of a genre combo ya got there...
      My advice when dealing with something like that would be to simply look at what has come before. There are plenty of RTS games out there you can take a look at (I recommend basically any of the Command & Conquer games. Personal favorites of mine) to see how they do things. You could also look at something like Sweet Home for the famicom. While that game is a survival RPG, it's top down perspective is still applicable. Sorry I don't have any specific tips, but I hope this helps!

    What if I want to make a map that is the inside of a house of an otaku that is in love with a specific anime girl? The house would be split into 3 models (one of which, is already done, as it was simply an inspiration-less attic, though, I, think I need to redesign it since it looks nothing like an actual attic) The 3 models would be the otaku's room (which I'm planning to be a creepily accurate recreation of the anime girl's actual room from her show), the attic, and the entire rest of the house with all the room, and everything within the house (likely except for the attic) being themed after this specific anime girl...
    Some of my issues are that I'm kind of, uh, unable to come up with original layouts, like, I don't know where to put the rooms, or how to make it take a decent chunk of time within a sort of linear but house shaped 3D stage to reach the otaku's room, or what obstacles to place, or even how to theme much obstacles after a single anime girl. Other than the idea of bouncy life size body pillows of her to reach higher areas to do jump from leg to leg (of the anime girl, there would be sitting life size statues of her placed on high pedestals that the player would have to grab onto her legs and jump from leg to leg) challenges to avoid touching life size statues of her in her Magical Girl form pointing her bow and arrow upward creating a sharp point that'd be painful to land on. I was also thinking there'd be posters of her everywhere as well edited pictures of stereotypical couples with her head photoshopped on the woman and the otaku's head photoshopped on the man, and one singular poster that is a life size picture of her placed in the first room in the house upon enter (the Girl is 152cm, the player would be able to pull off jumping from leg to leg because the player character is only 67.5cm, so a meter is pretty large compared to him) even then, I'm not sure if I'd have enough polygon space for a whole bunch of statues since my limit is 4500 (or 4800) tristrips for both the collision map and normal map as a whole, so 2250 tristrips for each map (or 2400 tristrips for each map) though I could simplify the collision maps, though I can't by much... May you please help me with my creative block? Like, any advice to how I could go about with designing this stage or doing obstacles based entirely off of one specific anime girl? I'd think the stage be pretty fortress like as well, just, extremely themed after this anime girl...

    here is another piece of advice.. dont overplan things give creativity some space dont be afraid to start with something idiotic like a 800x800x800 meter cube thats kinda underground no sky no window nothing and place your first thing you want in your map dont think too much about its position you might even end up deleting it later on or moving it who knows at this point. keep evolving from this point maybe jump to a totaly strange point like 200 meter in the air and build a platform who knows how to get there will it even stay a platform later on ? maybe it will become a room that you are going "down" to even tho its 200 meter in the air right now maybe it will be filled with water some time who knows. just dont worry your brain will think of things like .. wouldnt it be nice to be able to go there if you are down and you keep building staircases that you are wondering why they are soo long other games have like 4-5 steps and you just build your first staircase with like 100 steps just to get up ther... dont worry keep building keep molding and forming at some point you cut the stairs i n half or they disapera totaly because you build something else around. feel free and dont feel limited by what has to be its not like you are wasting materials so grab the tool you wanna work with and start fiddeling around rule number 1 ... everything is exactly as you want it to be there is no wrong. the rest will grow on you overtime dont worry too much :)

    The problem with the 'go outside' advice is that the real world isn't really... designed - and even the parts that are aren't really designed anything like a game. For instance, once of Rockstar's earliest titles, Oni, hired architects as level designers, to make the buildings in the game realistic. They ended up with a lot of pointless rooms that contributed nothing to the game-play, that were there solely for verisimilitude. I wouldn't recommend that.

    • @BenderWaffles
      @BenderWaffles  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Going outside is largely meant to teach you the idea of "designed randomness" as it were. Yes, the world isn't really designed, but there are certain patterns that people can start to notice if they look at the world around them. Like how close trees grow to water, how cities tend to clump around those bodies of water etc

    I can sort of see value in the first advice, but it's just for aesthetics. Gameplay is priority in games and for that purpose the first step in level design is building raw level layout, that excludes any details irrevelant to gameplay.
    Btw where is fifth advice?

      BenderWaffles randomness is very hard for me, but even harder is the overflow of ideas. I'm like "I could put this in and this in and this would fit the story and this and...." And then, I don't even know, what I was intended to do first. And when I'm creating something like a script or a list of ideas, I feel claustrophobic. like I can't use my full creativity, which leads back to my lack of randomness... /:
