  • DreamWorks Animation had a much better year than Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar in movie theaters. The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish heavily outperformed Lightyear and Strange World. How did DreamWorks defeat Disney at their own game? What happens now?
    DreamWorks Animation kicked off a new era with The Bad Guys, continuing what their new techniques in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Meanwhile, Disney has been falling from the competition and has no immediate way to recover. Will Universal (who owns DreamWorks Animation and Illumination) ultimately reach the top spot in the future of animated movies?

    It's crazy how a animated kids movie in 2023 resonated so much with audiences of ALL AGES. Puss in Boots went back to what made the older movies great

      I feel too that this film fit perfectly where it is now because if DreamWorks attempted a spinoff with Puss before his first actual film in 2011, they'd probably overdo the comedy and the story probably couldn't be this good.

    DreamWorks deserves this win. The animation quality speaks for itself, and the stories are charming and relatable and classic.
    Disney meanwhile, is almost afraid to innovate, and I honestly blame Chapek for this. His whole idea of animation being for kids, is why we have gotten less than memorable projects in the last couple of years, aside from Turning Red. Iger needs to pick someone to be at the helm within two years, since that's how long his contract is, who isn't afraid to take chances, because that's exactly what he did with some of the stories and companies he bought.

  • @dustytailstudios
    @dustytailstudios ปีที่แล้ว +383

    I think the one thing Disney does HORRIBLY WRONG is trying to stay to "the Disney brand":
    The reason owl house was cancelled and reduced was because it didn't fit the company's brand...even though it was literally it's MOST POPULAR SHOW. Their branding has been the same for literally almost 100 YEARS. They are not willing to put their foot out into new territory anymore. They turned the Disney brand into the Disney limitation. They just want the same stories we've seen as kids, doing the same schtick we seen them do,just with a new coat of paint. And yet they never get better. ..
    However, companies that are more willing to step OUTSIDE their comfort zone for the sake of pleasing an audience is finding it easier to grapple with the audiences Disney is neglecting. Remember the Don Bluth era? One of the whole reason he made his own company in the first place, was because he was sick and tired of how Disney movies didn't take risks! I would DESPISE a Disney's "An American tail" or "land before time" because they don't rely solely on sweet cuteness of main characters chasing dreams and never getting hurt. Don Bluth was one of the first animation companies I know that not only challenged Disney on a technical level, but he outright challenged Disney on an ideals level. And in my mind, Don Bluth won. Land before time,An American tail, and Anastasia are still remembered EXTREMELY fondly, while movies at the same time with Disney made okay money but not as beloved. Land before time vs Oliver and company, but only land before time is a household name now.
    I'm seeing it again here: Disney's ideals being what is crippling the company. Don't forget, this company is almost 100 years old by this point, and we lost Walt a long time ago. The ideals on what is a good movie in the 1920's is VASTLY different than 2020. Back then, people where alot more conservative, they wanted to see movies to escape depression and they where made to make people go "awe"... Well in 2022, we still wanna go "awe', but simply drawing cute bunnies or making adorable sidekicks is not working anymore.while the old Disney movies are super sweet and good watches for kids, it doesn't stick as hard. Its why Don Bluth said a kid will watch the most depressing things as long as there is a happy ending. Because that's exactly what fairytails, the things Disney banded themselves on, are known for; they're tragedies with happy endings!
    DreamWorks is doing it here, giving us REAL fairytails! Even 'the bad guy's is more of a modern fairytale! The story of a bad guy, who's done all bad things, finally feeling love and praise and actually tries to turn his life around. That's compelling and tells emotional story's without sacrificing anything! Are they're cute side characters? Yes, Webs is adorable and I love piranha and shark, but at the same time, they're *functional*. They aren't thumper and flower who are just cute for the sake of cute, they are ACTIVE parts of the story! And puss in boots challenges the audience by finally giving puss in boots something different; making him scared of his own mortality. If it was handled by Disney, puss in boots would just be fighting a highly villainised wolf. But no, it's a story about anxiety and living life to it's fullest.
    So yeah, I think we're seeing the decline of Disney animation. Not just because of overworked staff, a very insane legacy to live up to,and a lot of new bright competition, but because the Disney brand as a whole has created a creative bottleneck for Disney. They trapped themselves in the Disney brand. The only way to break it,is to achnoledge and go *against* their branding some. To explore new territory that the audiences *want*

      The thing is that Disney thinks it doesn’t have to try, I mean they were around for literally 100 years. They think they don’t need to freaking try is because they own everything and that people will watch there movies, regardless of how bad and soft they can be.
      And they won’t bother listening to fans. because why should they, they can’t tell Disney what to do, because they’re Disney. And having they have fans who would literally drop everything they’re doing just to see their movies, and are practically begging them to act how they used to be. Like you said, being dark but still make it for not only kids, but for adults too. But Disney doesn’t care what their fans think, and they know they can’t be killed because animation wouldn’t be around without them.
      This is why loathe Disney, every small company, every single one that worked so hard to make their movies fantastic, like Star Wars and marvel, Disney bought them, and they slowly dragged them down hill.
      It happened to Star Wars, marvel, and fox. All three of these companies are being ruined because of Disney.

    Honestly Disney needs to think about taking more risks and not just producing sequel after sequel after sequel because that’s really not what the viewers want to see. The more risks that are taken, the more experimental films will become and also Disney will have to force itself into advertising movies that deserve more exposure than advertising them right before they get released to theaters.
    I’m extremely tired of seeing repetitive remakes and sequels of movie franchises that clearly don’t need to be expanded more than they already have, such as Toy Story. There needs to be more variety as that’s really what the viewers want. So seeing DreamWorks take the throne out of Disney’s possession is a good thing as it means that viewers will follow what they really want to see. I honestly have hopes that this trend will continue.
