There is a difference between being tough and knowing you're actually in no condition to continue.
Plus, imagine how bad he'd have felt if a fly ball came to him and he couldn't make the appropriate throw. He'd feel guilty even though it would really be the coach's fault.
didnt play much growing up? its much harder to get the kid out than anything else, the pressure is completely natural and part of feeling a sense of comradery with your teammates

With him in the dugout while the team is still at-bat coach could've easily pulled him aside and asked him to make a couple throws and seen he couldn't do it. I guess you're also conveniently forgetting that kid asked for timeout during his injured at-bat. If kiddo really had the rose tinted mentality that you so describe he would've walked up there without making any fuss.
@@ryanshannon7703 kid had a bone bruise probably and had never tried to bat with one hand. I tend to believe they had no subs, then there was some leeway provided. I dont know though they mentioned that in the video. With actionable subs, its hard to believe they WOULDNT pull the kid though? no?

I just toughed it out. Now If I thought something was actually broken or I strained or tore a muscle, I obviously woulda stopped playing lol

If I recall correctly, the strike zone changes based on the batter, correct? So a 4'11" dude doesn't have the same strike zone as someone who's 6'11" because it's based off of their body positioning. In this instance, the batter modified his body positioning so it should have changed his strike zone.

There is a difference between hurt and injured. You can play hurt. If you are injured, you need to come out of the game and go to urgent care. Looks like that kid was injured.

There’s a difference between pain and injury. If something is wrong there is no shame in getting off the field. It’s hard to tell sometimes. I ended up playing a football game on a fractured leg bc I thought it was just pain. I could walk for a few weeks after that. I don’t blame the coach for that tho.

When a kid asks not to play, he's hurt. There's nothing else in the world these kids would rather be doing than playing in the LLWS and if one of them says they can't, they definately cannot.

I feel ya, Braden. I was riding my bike home from school in the 5th grade. First day of baseball practice. Fell and hurt my wrist. Mom got home from work and said “You’re fine. Go to practice.” When it was time to bat and I couldn’t follow through after contact, coach was yelling to follow through on my swing, while my mom realized I wasn’t kidding about being hurt. Next day, I had a cast on. I’m 32 now and my mom still feels bad about it.
I played the rest of the football season with a broken collarbone once... Granted that was just half a quarter and I had no clue I was hurt but still.
In addition to that my brother once got yelled at for dropping a pop fly in little league.... Turned out he had a broken thumb lol

By rule they couldn’t sub for him. The league officials had to make that call an exception for the injury. That one is on the league not the coach

I believe it hit the tip of the bones, which for kids are still “soft” bones and growing.
It’s how bones lengthen during the child’s growth: from the two ends out.
This part is soft and squishy enough, that... where he got hit, may have gotten slightly dented.
I don’t know about “fractured”, that’s more for hardened/fused part of bone that aren’t actively growing.
But yes, he may have gotten a bone damage from that hit.
It was what I suspected when he was on first base asked to do “squeeze your fist” test.

Yes, Cody. Go to your kids' sporting events, by all means. Just don't be "one of those parents" while you're there. I'm a senior citizen now, but 40 years ago, I coached Little League and Senior League (that's ages 13-15), and I got out primarily because a small, but significant segment of the parents became intolerable pains in the ass. That, and the fact that too many of my fellow managers got it in their heads that they were Earl Weaver or Tommy Lasorda, and made it all about them, and not the kids.
I had a mother pull her kid off the team because I pinch hit for her son. He was a pretty good player, but Mom was riding the first base umpire something awful while he was on deck. (He'd been picked off a couple innings previous, and she wouldn't give it a rest.) The ump was a teenage girl (no, we weren't particularly progressive back then....just short of umps, and she wanted the $20 per game), who I know was instructed not to engage the spectators no matter what. So I walked over and told her that if she didn't lay off the ump, I'd take her kid out of the game, and when she said "You wouldn't dare," I pinch hit for him. She came right down to the bench, grabbed him by the arm, and said, "We are leaving and not coming back." The league president called me later that night and said she'd demanded I trade her son, and when I told him I was not trading a good player because his mother couldn't behave herself, he said that she would make him quit. I wouldn't, she did, and the rest of the games were much more enjoyable.
That was the same season I did trade a kid before the season started because his mother told me, "My son doesn't sell raffle tickets," which was a requirement....each kid had to sell one book of 10 tickets. Most of the parents just threw a tenner in the envelope and kept the tickets for themselves, but not her.
It can't have gotten any better. I've seen those youth soccer videos here, and I cannot imagine that youth baseball is immune to the influx of Kens and Karens to the bleachers, either.

@@Stepbrorob “Knife to the throat” is obviously what that coach says when he isn’t mic’d up - that’s where the kid learned that phrase. Coach was trying to make a “nice guy” speech to a national audience but the kid showed coaches true colors.

Man this gave me a flashback to when I was 12 playing travel ball and literally got a broken right hand from a line drive at 3rd base and nobody believed me for like 2 innings until it swelled up. Listen to the damn kids when they say they're hurt...
Hell yeah. I was pitching at age 14. My team sucked so damn bad, I think there were at LEAST 5 errors in one inning, causing me to throw a trillion pitches. My shoulder was shot to hell, hurt like crazy and I couldn't throw any more, but my coach screams at me to "stop throwing lolipops out there". I never fully recovered from the injury, never took the mound again in any game. Had to quit HS baseball two years later. Later on I played two seasons in an adult fast pitch league and some softball leagues, but eventually had surgery, the pain was so great. It all goes back to that one game.

Depends on the kids, I know a kid who says somethings more serious than it is, told us his ankle is broken or sprained, he went to the doctors and it’s nothing, the next day he’s running around, I’ve seen way more than this, kids actually have no idea about their body yet and haven’t experienced certain pains yet

Reminds me of when I was playing little league and a kid slid into a base and was complaining about hurting their foot. Their dad was the coach and told them to suck it up. I think they finished up the rest of the game and then they went to the hospital and the dude tore his Achilles. His dad felt so bad about it afterwards.

I can speak from experience about this. I had an injury from pitching that hurt in the exact same spot as this kid, and trust me, he is not overreacting. For the first like 2 weeks I could barely throw the ball 10 yards with a crow hop, and like a week later I was barely able to throw from first to second (80 feet). I was also incredibly painful to throw, meaning I couldn’t do it more than a couple times before having to rest for a couple days. I ended up missing a month of baseball, and spent another with limited throwing. Couldn’t imagine having to play a position like outfield with this, though (I played 1st base when I was hurt). This kid is a warrior

There's a rule in a lot of leagues where you are allowed one extra substitution but only in the event of an injury to an active player. It seems that's what the official was confirming.

If the substitution rule is the same as I remember it, ‘if you’re out of eligible substitutes the other teams manager gets to pick which player comes off the bench.’
I had this situation many times, usually the opposing manager says “use whoever you want”, but I have had opposing managers pick the least talented player.
There's only 10 players
Different leagues have different variations on how to deal with this situation. The main issue is that you want to get everyone into the game, so you are out of substitutes and re-entries by the closing innings. For regular season games we would generally just put whoever the injured player came in for. If they were unavailable due to being hurt themselves, it was whoever had the least amount of plate appearances in the game, or the most recent one for ties. For playoff or tournament games, you just fofitted if you couldn't field a team. It was the managers fault for burning his bench.

I've had the same injury to my elbow. Nothing to scoff at! I still can't use my left hand and it's been 24 years since it happened. Stay strong kid!
Keep working it. It will come around. Mine took about thirty years before I could throw without the elbow pain. I am still hoping to make the majors one of these years.

I had the same injury which led to not being able to use my left hand ring and pinky fingers for over two years. That exposed area of the elbow has a crucial bundle of nerves, evolutionary defect lol

Hey - I actually had a similar issue, glad I'm not alone. I slipped on a boat and just cranked the inside of my elbow. Laughed at it at the time - not laughing now (15+ years later) - still weaker / pain / can't do some stuff. Luckily fingers still work, but f***, that is a no joke stupid injury / weak point - I honestly hate how fragile it is there.

I find it crazy how I am in my mid 20's.. I have never understood baseball and I'm watching these kids all know exactly what to do, how to play, where to throw it to.. it's just mental to me XD And I know the world doesn't revolve around me lol, I just find it mental that they know so much! I’m telling you this right now, this is not the last time you will see that kid. How tough he is at such a young age and how he figured out how to get around his injury. His parents and cough taught him right
My brother took a similar hit when he was playing at 14, entire elbow was bruised, couldn't play for over a month and then he became ball shy ending his days of playing.
I'm not a doctor, but I suspect his medial epicondyle is fractured. It doesn't take much to break one when you're young and unless you break it off completely it's hard to detect without x-rays.
Its probably a bruise and the kid is a ween.
