This is one of the movies I have purchased / owned in every format it has been released. It has looked never better. The "Blue Mars" issue isn't really an issue for me. When I look at it, it's still a red planet with a blue tint. I can certainly live with it as everything else is far superior.
Once I heard about the color timing issue, coupled with Paramount's refusal to correct it, and then the revelation that When Worlds Collide is a muddied mess when compared to a prior international release, I cancelled my preorder and will stick to the Criterion I have.
Viewers sometimes complain about the wires (some electric) being visible suspending the Martian war machines. This is because the film used the Technicolor process (which fuzzed out the cords), but released in Eastman Color, which rendered them visible. I don't know about this new release, but I've yet to see a print (and I have it on DVD, laserdisc and VHS) where the wires aren't visible. I'm sure producer George Pal and his fabulous FX crew would not mind those cords optically removed today.

Great review Adam! The War Of The Worlds, 1953 version, is my favourite sci-fi film of all time. I just think it's so well done. The special effects still look good and impress today. The scene were the alien cylinder unscrews and the heat ray is unleashed is stunning. Great film.
The colour issue isn't a big deal to me, especially considering how brief both of the shot are. The lack of the original mono theatrical audio track however is a big problem. I was not a fan of the updated 5.1 audio mix on the criterion release, which included some pretty drastic changes to the sound effects. I was constantly being pulled out of the film by sound effects that simply did not gel with the rest of the audio being presented, they immediately stood out to my ears as *new*.

Fantastic quality and I already had the Criterion. I thought the sound was better than I expected with use of overheads giving a good surround feeling.
Thank you for the review. My Criterion copy recently got scratched and skips and I was thinking of upgrading to this version. After hearing about Paramount dropping the ball on the Mars color, I'm probably just going to buy another copy of the Criterion release.
I got this for 35$ at barnes and noble and love it!
I didn't like the color transfer in Criterion version is too purple. So I sold it and ordered this.
Looks great, but I'm going to keep my Criterion.
If I recall, in the original release you could see wires suspending the alien ships in certain scenes. Did they digitize those out in this release?
I was hoping he'd say something about that. Actually, it was filmed in Technicolor, wherein the wires weren't very noticeable at all, but released in Eastman color, and of course, rendered very visible. I don't know what this new release looks like, but I don't think George Pal would mind those wires being optically removed.
I wasn't sure I wanted to double dip this title after I already purchased Criterion's blu ray, but you convinced me. Course I was always certain that-- now that Criterion has started releasing (and re-releasing) titles in 4K-- sooner or later they'd be issuing a 4K upgrade of War of the Worlds. Is it possible they still might?
I’d be very surprised if they did. Criterion probably only had the rights to the Blu-ray.
Wait is the 5.1 a surround mix of the original mono or did they add sound effects?

Would you say that the over all color grading is as good as the Criterion except for the Mars glitch?
It looks to be very similar, plus the hdr/DV of course.
Which laptop should I buy to watch HDR or DV content? So that colors look accurate as intended for HDR screen? 100% sRGB or 100% DCI-P3 or 45% NTSC

No I haven’t, I don’t own that version unfortunately.

You didn’t answer the biggest Q , did they do a wire removal of the wires used to suspend the war machines? Or are they visible in higher quality.
A very good and important question for us major fans of the film! With every release, I keep hoping they will, and I own 2 VHS, 2 DVD, and one laserdisc of the thing. Pal would have wanted that, as it was not his fault they printed his Technicolor film on Eastman Color, which really brought out those previously invisible wires.
I like the packaging on paramount presents it feels premium. Adam will you be getting Invaders From Mars toO?
Maybe down the line. Their is just too much coming right now.

I have a ps 4 so I can't watch 4k. Does it have a blu ray option for War of the Worlds, as this and when worlds collide are 2 of my favourite sci to films and would love to buy it.
No it just comes with the 4K disc and a Blu-ray for When worlds collide. If you want the Blu-ray, grab the criterion or imprint release.

I hated this movie when I first saw it my Uncle had it on 8mm film. As I'd just read the book but the more I watched I really got to love it for what it was.
This is the rare release that resulted in both a triple dip (dvd, criterion, 4K of War of the Worlds) and a double dip (dvd and blu-ray of When Worlds collide). A bit disappointed about the blue mars, but otherwise happy to own this release.
The laserdisc looked great.

According to the DVD Beaver reviews, both The War of the Worlds 4K UHD and When Worlds Collide BRD discs in this set are region free.
Arrived today and BRD works fine.
I hope that those who were offended by this Mars red/blue business we're able to pick up the shattered pieces of their lives and somehow find a way to carry on. Maybe even forget about what color Mars was 2 seconds after they showed it and then enjoy the rest of the picture.
Mars is populated thus an atmosphere, water etc. You cannot instigate an attack on Earth from a desert. I prefer the original colouring of Mars...
Maybe we should have Team Negative1 or Harmy fix this properly. All these years, and paramount still sucks.
I picked this one up on day one. It looks excellent except for that blue mars of course. Paramount's response is purely political. The trailer for the 4k release actually shows a red mars! Paramount simply doesn't want to invest the money to correct the discs.
This sounds very plausible, indeed!
