  • Read about the making of 1984 Karateka in Jordan's old journals: jordanmechner.com/journals
    In this video, Jordan Mechner, creator of Karateka and Prince of Persia, explains the rotoscoping method he pioneered in 1982 to create Karateka's distinctively fluid animation -- a predecessor of the technique he adapted 4 years later for Prince of Persia.
    More about the original Karateka and the 2012 remake at jordanmechner.com/projects/ka...
    Video produced by Earl Newton (dot com).

    That game has been in the hearts and minds of so many people. Thanks for making that funny animation of falling off the cliff.

    The very first animation in Karateka, when he climbs up from the mountain, was the best story element of the game for me. It seemed useless to waste probably a few days rotoscoping an animation like that, but the fact the protagonist didn't just appear on screen but climbed from somewhere, suggested a background story that ignited my imagination. So it was worth it. Thanks and can't wait to play K2.

    These are really neat videos, Jordan. Thanks so much for uploading them. The stories about how the original made and then the stories about how the remake are being made are really interesting to hear!!

    Thanks for sharing! I remember Karateka was one of the first game I've ever seen on the commodore as a child, and the animation was absolutely outstanding, I was always wondering how was it even possible to make it that good. Of course later I was learning about rotoscope animation but still it was an amazing achievement back then to make it happen with 8 bit computers! Definitely a milestone in computer history. Thanks again for sharing this little documentary.

    It'd be really cool if the fighting movements in the remake were created with a real martial arts instructor, as the original had its movements copied from a real Karate teacher. But even with fights looking cartoon-ish, the game is still such a lovely reimagining with new additions so elegantly implemented. Thank you so much for creating this remake! :)

    Very interesting. I think original Karateka and Prince of Persia are seamless combination of old and new technology to create something very innovative. Rotoscoping was old method, but combining it with new medium (computer games) was a stroke of genius.

    I knew there had to be some sort of human movement behind Karateka. Loved it in the 80s!

    Why didn't you use the super 8 camera to capture your brother for Prince of Persia? (my all-time fav game, btw.)

    • @anyonebacon8387
      @anyonebacon8387 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think this is a joke, but he did that for Prince of Persia only it was VHS

    • @allluckyseven
      @allluckyseven 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I'm not joking. The thing is that, because he captured it in VHS, he had to go buy the best VHS player he could find (though he managed to return it later) so that he could get clear still images while he advanced the video frame by frame.
      Sure, with a VHS camera he could record it more than once using the same tape. And in the end he got his money back from the VHS player, but still.
      I'm guessing VHS was good enough for what he wanted and less expensive... unless he'd have to keep the player, then he would've been screwed!

      Oh yeah I know about that,I watched a video where he explained it. I also read his Journal. I just thought you were kidding because you pretty much got it spot on in your first comment XD
