I miss my old G&L Legacy Special like it was my child. Due to hard times I had to sell it and now own a cheaper (but still great) Squier Classic Vibe Strat.
I recently had an ASAT Classic S (alnico) made to order through Music Store Live and I am blown away by everything. It looks, plays, and sounds fantastic. And the best part is that this custom guitar cost about the same as an American Professional Tele.
Currently waiting for my second custom M-2500, this one fretless. The are incredible instruments, and mine have replaced several other basses costing many times more. The only drawback is the wait. Ordered mine in beginning of February, and not due to delivering until another 8 weeks!
I bought my G&L Legacy used, but ever since I played that guitar for the first time, I thought there was something different about it. It's still sitting next to my chair and is the guitar I reach for now.
I could not agree more. My Legacy USA is the best playing guitar I have ever had my hands on. I consider G&L guitars works of art and well worth the money.
Made in California by Californians, many of whom trace their roots to Spanish speaking countries. The greatest vintage necks ever made were made by Tadeo Gomez in the 1950s. His children and grandchildren, Californians all, are proud that his name brings such honor to their family. Great players prize hand craftsmanship. Californians are particularly talented at this.
I have a G&L ASAT Classic-S its a 3 pickup Tele, In my 35 years of playing guitar, and I have owned hundreds of guitars all the way from the original 50's guitars to brand new, custom built PRS's. The G&L ASAT Classic-S is my "ALL TIME" favorite guitar EVER. I have owned 59 Gibson Melody Makers, 60's and 70's Gibson SG's, 60's and 70's Stratocaster's, custom shop Les Pauls, and Stratocasters, and custom built PRS's. To be better then all those guitars really is saying something. I know alot of it is a subjective thing. But some guitars, just become an extension of your body, and your soul. My G&L does that in spades. To clarify though I have done some custom work to it, I have shielded the whole body cavity, and added Joe Barden pickups and deluxe locking tuners. This guitar will SMOKE any Tele that I have EVER played, and I've played hundreds of them.
Mark Maxon I bought a 50watt Music Man combo in 1979/80. It's served me well over the years and continues to do so. Sounds SO sweet with new tubes! I run a 1990 G&L ASAT through it.... what a great match. I'd originally bought a brand new Fender American Standard Tele, but traded it for the ASAT within a week of buying it. Big difference! :0)
i agree, I bought a traditional plus les paul for the same reason, it has the 50's style chunkier neck, but when I used that & then the mexi, it was a bit weird.. it was a tapered style? not sure if that is the term but it was flat /wide, prob good for tapping, but I am not a tapper, I am more classic rock, jazz, funk, & blues ..and I had a 91 usa strat I loved but was forced to sell , so now I have the 2001 and I was like ok this is cool.thanx I will def check them out, they sound like a deal.
@@tonypoore440 North American Swamp Ash that's been seasoned and dried properly at A5 quality is incredibly expensive. It is far more expensive than pine. remember the wood is worth nothing if it isn't properly kiln dried and seasoned for at least a decade for it to stabilize properly. You can do it yourself, but good luck building a large enough kiln to bake the wood and then finding the time to have it dry for a decade before you start your project.
@@arthurwilliams3479 Sorry, I should've put a smiley or sarcastic emoji after my comment. 🙄 I own a honey burst USA Legacy that shows off that beautiful one piece swamp ash body, and it did cost a pretty little penny.
Take a trip to your local guitar shop and check out the Classic Vibes to make sure you'll be happy with the necks because at least on the CV Strats they are a bit on the thin side. I personally prefer a beefer neck on my guitars so this was my one gripe.
If you ever get the chance to compare an off the rack Fender next to a G&L it's so obvious how much nicer the G&L is. Fenders are great no doubt and of Leo's designs I own 4 of them sadly not one is a G&L. I'm fairly certain a current Fender can be as good as a G&L but it'll need a proper setup. The guitars coming out of the old Fullerton plant are the shit. I'm fairly certain a Legacy is in my future.
jack orion I had bought a Fender American Standard Tele; within a week I traded (upgraded) it for a G&L ASAT. The MFD p'ups, having a choice in the neck radius, the bridge with a hex key to tighten/lock it, all the attention to detail just make it such a better instrument. Also had a custom see through blue finish on the ash body. Absolute beauty in looks, sound, and playability.
Get the Legacy. They are great guitars. The only thing I would change on mine if I could go back and custom build it would be to change it from S/S/S to H/H. But that's just me liking the sound of a humbucker at the neck. There is nothing wrong with S/S/S at all. Certainly a classic look providing a classic sound.
the way fender wanted it lol! ever since the first fender factories in the 4os, Mexican's have always built fender guitars, it's unavoidable in south california...
Played a G&L for the first time the other day... sounded great, but not sure what they are talking about "rolled" fret board edges... The edge of the fretboard on the one I played was sharp, and wasnt very comfortable...
I have a 2001 usa strat, but I wanted a few others to compare,i am in the process of buying a G & L legacy , and I had a mexi fender but I did not like it- the neck was a flatter wider more modern type, I guess I like the c-shape on my usa better, but i'm just comparing models, I also hope to get a Suhr classic & a Tom Anderson one day when I have the bucks or if I can find a used one the way I would want one. I just wanted to know how much better is the cv than a reg squire, mostly..thanx
Unless you are set on picking up a USA Fender I would go with the CV line, which can't be beat for the money. And the Classic Vibe's are miles ahead of the standard squiers and even the Mexican made Fenders.
Well, saying the CV’s are “better than a MIM” is a bit of stretch. Saying they are close would be closer to the truth. A MIM Strat or Tele is the standard by which all guitars are measured. The diminishing returns of the higher priced instruments pale in comparison.
Yea I'm the guy in the green shirt. I'm a lefty but started playing my dads r/h guitar when I was a kid....he still has that guitar and I still have the green shirt.
3 years late an all, but the left handed guitar market is trash. A lot of people who think ahead just go righty with guitar, plus being left hand means they have an easier time fretting
how would you compare the squire classic vibe to the rest of the fender line..where does it sit in quality to the usa line, mexi line and standard squiers.any help would be aprec I am thinking of getting a classic vibe..
I don't see how their nationality is a discriminating factor if they display just as much skill and passion, as employees of other ethnic origins. AS the plant is in the USA, they're bound to use high-quality materials. What's the difference besides ignorant prejudice?
G&Ls used to be good. Cost cutting has made them just average. I bought an ASAT classic back in December and within 6 weeks had to replace both the nut and the pickup selector.
You should look at videos of what the original fender factory was like in the 50s...All those classic $50,000 American guitars were also made by Mexicans....
Oh, I don't know about that... when I was in Sweden I kissed a very dark haired girl... a red haired girl and a very blonde, blonde. Lots of different colors. By the way there is only the human "race"
Another guitar company that doesn't shield their electronics. They have really nice guitars why not shield them like even the cheapest mp3 player has. It knocks down the 60 cycle hum and other electronic interference. Not all noise but quite a bit. Especially with non-humbucking pups in use.
G&l instruments, totally surpass, miles ahead, any Fender custom shop master built creation, thoroughly equal, or even surpass any Tom Anderson, Tyler, Suhr (I think former G&L nitro finishing guru, was transferred to Suhr), Grosh, Prs private stock, Thorn, and come too close to D'Pergo, Stevenson, and Gustavsson, guitars. But, there are some museum grade G&l instruments out there, that kill any of the aforementioned makers with the exception of truss rod less D'Pergo, by which they keep hand to hand or extremely close...
Jester Jug NOTHING is what it once was. That's OK. Who ever thought my tube snob since the early 70s self would fall in love with a Quilter amp? G&Ls are still superb guitars!
mixville2 PLay an early 90's G&L and then play a recent G&L and compare your answer will be simple The earlier ones are Superb guitars the recent ones simply are not. I have a large collection of G&L's and it very obvious. They still look good but the newer one have lost there way. Simply don't feel or sound as good.
The best G&L guitars were built between 2003-2008, mostly 2003-2004. I know seriously, what I' m talking about... They are some of the finest electrics of all ages... My 2004 G&L Comanche, sporting 1 piece museum grade birdseye maple neck, only found on Teuffel guitars, surpasses my Tom Anderson Drop Top, with Madagascar rosewood fretboard, any Don Grosh, PRS private stock, Tyler, Detemple or Suhr, and completely exterminates every Fender custom master built, with no mercy, taking no prisoners... Totally equal, night and day to D'pergo and Teuffel guitars.
+bluesboynate Not necessarily a load of shit at all. While these woods aren't all to rare, not all wood is fit to be used on a guitar when it comes to fit and finish.
If you ever see my 1 piece birdseye (out of this world) maple neck 2004 G&L Comanche, which can only be seen at Teuffel guitars necks, and some Don Grosh guitars of the past, you will cry like a baby. Fender in fact, would kill themselves...
I wasn't referring to figured Maple. Though there is still plenty of it to be had out there. Grade is subjective. But a beautiful piece to a certain person can be rare as they are all unique in some way.
I found a pine board a the hardware store on the shelf of cheap 1" xs that was something of an extreme Birdseye effect. One of the more beautiful boards I'd ever seen sitting 10' long and selling with the cheapest building materials for under $10. I of course bought it and used it to fashion a few projects around the house that I display with pride. Point is, great wood can be found in many unsuspecting places. It just takes the right eye to find where to use it
