Thank you! Congratulations on the new lathe. There are lots of good videos. Just look up lathe basics or how to use a lathe. You could also see if there is a woodturning club near you. Or possibly a woodturning class.
I like the vase shape. Can these vases hold water to keep a flower fresh? If not, is there a finish that would be waterproof? When you turn a project from a branch, is the wood aged and dry, or do you turn wet wood? Thanks, Jay
Thank you! Yes you can put a test tube into the hole and add water. I turn both green and dry wood. A lot of times with the green wood I will pack it in a paper bag along with the shavings and let it sit for 1 to 3 months or so and then finish turning it. That works pretty well to prevent cracks.
The difference is the depth of the flute. A spindle gouge has a shallower flute and it can work better for details. I use a spindle gouge sometimes when I need to get in tighter spaces.
Birch?! That is unique. I have never really seen birch grain exposed and polished like that. Beautiful.
Thank you! I'm glad you like it.
What a beautiful little vase. Love the look of birch! ♥
Thank you! I'm glad you like it!
Looking good Rus 👍🏴
Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
...nicely done, Rus...👍

You're right, looks good in birth. Really like the new design. Might be one of my favorites, thank you...Dan
Thank you Dan! I appreciate that!
Cool
Thanks!
Nice design, looks easy to do I'm going to try. I have some white Burch never used. I hope it's easy to turn
Thank you! This is the only birch I've turned but it pretty easy to work with.

What do you think about bowl gouge vs spindle gouge? Is there much of a difference when turning spindles? Is it a matter of what feels best?
