- On his way to invade the North for the first time, Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia faced off with John Pope's Army of Virginia at the Second Battle of Manassas. On August 28, 1862, Rufus King's Division encountered Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's Second Corps and that would begin the Second Battle of Bull Run. It would rage for two more days as Longstreet's Corps tried to link up with Jackson and Pope attempted to defeat Jackson before that junction could be made.

Man, such a vivid description of the Second Battle of Manassas. The Stonewall and Iron Brigades going toe-to-toe with each other for the first time. Each side not giving in to the other. A slugging match.
Should and could of been in gods and generals but they just had to have those John Wilkes booth scenes

Yeah, that is an understated face off. The best of the Union line vs the best of the Confederate line.
Remember,it was the 19th and solely against the Stonewall brigade. 45 minutes, 75 paces apart ,in the barnyard of brawners farm. 14.9% dead for the 19th and Ewell's leg shot off.
My great great uncle served in the 19th Indiana of the Black Hats from its formation until he was killed on the first day at Gettysburg.
My great great Uncle was a sergeant in the Sixth Wisconsin, at all the battles until wounded on the first day of Gettysburg.
@@stevenfidika125 It's a small world isn't it? My uncle had been promoted to Sergeant 10 days before he was killed. I actually have a letter that he wrote to his mother and father that's dated June 25th 1863. In it he talks about how his regiment was in high spirits and just itching for a fight. It's really kind of sad when we know that just 6 days later the entire Brigade was completely decimated while making a hopeless last stand.

Thanks for the reply. My uncle was wounded in the left hand, lost some fingers on July 1, 1863. He refused to go back into combat because of his wound. The Army busted him to private and put him in the Invalid corps until his enlistment expired in 1864. I was able to order the medical records.

Brawners Farm doesn’t seem to be Jackson at his finest, but considering how much his corps had marched in the previous days I don’t suppose peak performance is to be expected.
Thank you so much. Jackson's division commanders were very slow to move, so Jackson took the matter into his own hands, but the first day of Second Bull Run did not go well for him.

I hope your father came through OK! I too am a "cancer thriver"...Leukemia..Regardless of my sometimes contrary views and harsh remarks, I would never wish upon anyone the burden that loved ones must bear when a friend or family member is stricken with this diabolical disease. It is often times much tougher on them then it is on us....prayers...and strength be with you and your father.

@@HistoryGoneWilder You are more than welcome! I'm very glad he is going to be able to continue being your father. I lost mine in 2013...to lung cancer. His father to Leukemia. The disease is rampant on both sides of my family. I've made peace with the fact that it will eventually claim my life...but not w/o a fight! It is much harder on my wife than me. As I said, Even though I say some pretty harsh stuff, this site and the videos you put out have really helped me. It has reignited my passion(which I am going to at least try to temper?) for CW history and I THANK YOU!!

2nd Manassas was so much larger, so much bloodier, and probably at least as important as 1st Manassas, yet yours is about the only animated battle-map I can find on the entire internet. Gods work, says I.
Thank you so much. Yes, Second Manassas does not get the attention it should get. I love animated battle maps and I created this channel to animate battles that need more detail or ones that get looked over.
I would argue that Second Manassas was strategically more important than First Manassas and was the closest Lee ever came to destroying an enemy army in a single battle. It was very close to being the Saratoga of the Civil War.
Having done 26 years plus of just Civil War reenacting it's tough to find new material.Your videos riveting to look at.Combined with having walked all the Virginia battlefields many times and being a native your maps are accurate and perfect for these battles.Great Job!

Can't claim to be a relative of GIbbon but as a civil war buff from the michigan/Wisconsin border I love the Iron Brigade. GIbbon is my favorite civil war general.

My great granduncle we in the 19th IND b co. I was back there for the 130 anniversary reenactment. I can't tell you how sublime it was.
His name was Benjamin B Duke
My great-great grandfather was wounded and died two days later. He was with the 19th Indiana, Co. F. John Goggin was an Irishman from County Kerry.

Every account I’ve read was hell.
It’s been years since I’ve read on the battle but if memory serves correct I believe when Jackson was interrogating a or some POWs from the regiment he couldn’t believe he was fighting less than a brigade.
Also, for the numbers engaged it was Jackson's worst defeat. Since he couldn't push them off the field.

I used to own a copy of the history of the Iron Brigade by Col. Rufus Dawes of the 6th Wisconsin. Gave me such respect and admiration for the men from the Midwest. I'm a native of Maine myself which we all know has a famous regiment with the Army of the Potomac..

That books been on my list. If you’re interested “The iron brigade” by Alan T. Nolan was a remarkable read on the units history and stories. Also cool pictures from the states archives

The only bad thing about it being a tie is that the next poll was going to include the Battle of Richmond, Kentucky.
What role did Mosby play. Did he help in some way or was he off doing what he supposed to? How common was the rank of 3rd lieutenant in the Confederate armies? I know I should’ve asked when you compared Mosby and Morgan. That day was just off for me.

Yes, I used his book extensively to create the animated battle map. It's a great book.
The mini-battle at Brawner's farm was a mini-disaster for Jackson! He had all the advantages; he should have been able to bag King's whole division. His far superior numbers,18,000 (only getting 6000 into the fight) compared to King's 2500, Concealment, Artillery, and most of all...Surprise! The Union division even payed NO attention to Jackson, sitting on "Little Sorrel," observing them from an open position, as they marched right on by!! Jackson's "piecemeal" uncoordinated attacks allowed acting Div. Cmdr John Hatch to effectively counter the "underwhelming" firepower! Jackson even suffered More casualties:1250 to 1150, decimating 4 of his best regiments; and losing 2 Division Cmdrs- Taliaferro and Ewell (who would not see action again until Gettysburg)!! A heavy price to pay...for what? To keep Pope's attention??

I hate to do this but the ANV didn't have corps until 1863 at the time of 2nd Manassas it would be Jackson's left wing and Longstreet's right wing. I do love the video thought.

Lee said “wing” instead of “corps”, but a wing is a corps.
@@mrsnakesmrnot8499 when the ANV had wings you would see 4-7 divisions under one general with corps you would see 2-4 divisions under one commander.
Maj. King - and the corps “commander” is also technically a “general”. The leader of a wing/corps was called “general”, who is a “commander”. Jackson was a corps commander when he commanded a “wing”, and Lee was both a corps and army commander when he lead his half directly and ordered Jackson....
Yes, if Lee chose to break up his army into three parts instead of two, then there would be less divisions in each part, as you correctly point out. Instead of wings, Bobby could have preferred to call them “halves”, but they are still the first subdivision of his army, which is traditional corps structure. The next subdivision, as you know, is traditionally called “division”, but Bobby reserved the right to call it any pet name he wished, like “barrel”. HYPOTHETICALLY, If a historian in the future chose to talk about Lee’s division commanders, and he did not call them “barrel commanders”, as Bobby referred to them, then that is fine.
So, who was Ewell leading into the fight when he was wounded?
Jackson's brigade against the 19th IND for forty five minutes at 75 paces it ended because of darkness. The 19th suffered 14.4% dead,that's 1 out of 7 !

“Invasion of the United States” ?!?!? Lee was always in the United States.
My great, great grandfather was killed in this engagement. He was in the 26th Georgia Regiment. I'm thankful to still have some of the letters he wrote home prior to his death, and the certificate of death issued by the Confederate War Dept.

You are very welcome. The Confederates won an incredible victory at Second Bull Run and it doesn't get the attention that it should.
Amazing how Pope was so over confident he ignored so much intelligence at the start of this fight. Not to take anything away from Lee or Jackosn, but man did Federal ineptitude pay huge dividends for the Confederate cause here.
So ironic.. that Brawner’s Farm is basically the rematch between the 2nd Wisconsin and the Stonewall Brigade.
