Santaolalla's Amores Perros theme is a haunting and poignant piece of music. It may appear simple on the surface, but to truly bring out its melancholy and agonized spirit requires special attention a few technical and musical points.
First among these is the importance of a strong vibrato. This is easier said than done, and this piece is a great opportunity to practice this technique. Second is an awareness of and respect for silence, allowing ample space for the notes to slowly fade away and die out. And third is a liberal use of dynamic variation, over-emphasizing both the loudest and quietest notes throughout the piece. These are, in my opinion, the crucial elements that breath life into this piece of music and allow the notes to reflect the heartbreaking reality of the film's storyline.
