Out of all Emperors in history, Carolus Rex is only among few that I respect the most.
Imagine being 15, an entire continent is against your rule, and beat 3 of its great powers, and being the first to invade Russia in centuries. Not only that, your men swore loyalty to you, and is highly respected because of your actions, and dies epically in battle. This is the definition of badass.

Charles XII is the last king in history to die in battle. Not only did he find it paramount to participate in person but he often fought in the front lines too. That seems like a good principle for a monarch to have, to avoid any Kim Jong Un type situation where the ruler's world is completely detached from real life.

You will absolutely cover WW1 and WW2 in high school. But to be honest, I learned much more about those conflicts by playing wargames.

Used this video to capture the interest of my students during a course on Russian history. It meshed perfectly with the topic of Russia's Varangian/Viking origins and their later battles with Sweden during the reign of Peter the Great, and completely caught the attention of the metalheads (which was most of the class). One of the greatest kings of my dear Sweden. We are proud to have had such a king.
I was playing this while battling as Sweden in Empire Total War last night. It was epic. Starting a Great Northern War against Denmark, Russia, and Poland all at once and generally winning is pretty cool. I started a new game, in my previous playthrough I never ended up going to war with Poland so I focused on Russia and actually had a sizable battle near "Poltava" on the map except I easily thrashed the Russians lol.

Well, the Russians wanted peace because they had poorly trained soldiers, they had the manpower tho and a good leader. I guess Charles got a bit delusional after winning 6 battles straight against the Russians, he wanted more and went pretty much suicide march straight into Russia, no food, burnt down villages (by the Russians themselves) all the way to Poltava while soldiers died, out numbered and tired and hungry soldiers. He should have just went back.
Interesting how the same thing happened with Napoleon too; the Russians burned down everything in their retreat and by the time Napoleon got to Moscow it was worthless and the army failed.
Actually, what happened was this.
The russians had signed a continued peace treaty with Sweden, just prior to the war. They were planning a war against Sweden, drawing up plans together with their allies while they were simultaneously involved in negotiations of peace with Sweden.
Then they all attacked Sweden, and Karl XII responded by first beating the russians at Narva, knocking them out of the war temporarily, then taking on his other enemies. But while doing so, the russians put up a new army and took Nöteborg (which is now known as St Petersburg, after Tsar Peter, who was the one commanding the russians against Karl XII).
After doing so, they offered a peace treaty with Sweden, based of course on them keeping what they had just conquered. Unsurprisingly, Karl XII didn't take this offer of peace very seriously, since they had already shown just how much they care about peace treaties and had no qualms about breaking them whenever it suited them.
He didn't do a suicide march into Russia, he actually marched into southern Russia, where he was going to spend the winter with his allies among the Cossacks, led by Ivan Mazepa. Unfortunately, when he reached his planned winter quarters, he found out that the russians had got there first and had burned the supplies that had been stored there.
Look up where Poltava is located, and you might be surprised to find that it isn't on the way between Sweden and Moscow....

I'm Dutch and I needed to learn about all wars we were involved in, the great northern were one of them, we were allies, and all absolute monarchies, but I did highest level of school so I don't know if everyone needed to learn about him

problem is in present day sweden and europe the mentaltity of our people. For the Muslims its important to expand and conquer meaning they have many children! 100 years ago Sweden had 5 mil people, the same as Morroco/Algeria/Sudan and more then Iraq/Syria/Kenya but al these countries have now 3-4 times more people then sweden.

A epic song from a epic band. I myself as a Norwegian admire Sweden for having Sabaton, Im a big fan of Swedish metal and of course history. Rex is of course a royal title used in Norway aswell, but Karl the 12'th really wanted to break trough in Norway, but I am proud of the few Norwegians holding him back time after time, and of course the ledgendary Tordenskjold sinking the Swedish supply fleet line. All in all great history but it's just silly for us Nordic people fighting, we have fought before and we have united and I think unity is the soulution! Awesome video man!

Charles XII was not perfect, but he deserves respect for his principles, being very digilent and leading by example. Contrary to popular belief, he never started any wars. He spent half his life (litterally) in an 18 year long defensive war against an overwhelming coalition of enemies. Sweden never really had an ally in this war, exept for partisan Ukranians but they were small in numbers and could accomplish very little. In the battle of Narva he alongside his soldiers defeated a 10 times (!) larger Russian force which became a legend. He made strategic mistakes and was stubborn and refused to listen to his advisors, that I think became his fall.
