James Mcenanly that actually has a explanation, Strax is a new version of these people, the older ones were smarter but they soon realized cloning made the newer ones dumber, of course they fixed it but the intelligence stayed the same as the dumb ones. So yea

I'm going to be honest. While scarier than the modern Sontarans, the classic ones look even more like a potato with limbs!
The mask from The Time Warrior was a lot better though

For those wondering why the mask looks so rubbery and expressionless (compared to The Time Warrior): Kevin Lindsey had been diagnosed with a heart condition shortly after (if not while) playing Linx, so the Styre was made looser and easier to breath inside of. But Lindsey had lost so much weight that the mask didn't fit him properly, so the effect is even worse in the end result.
That's just staggering, that he died only about two months after this episode was released. RIP Kevin Lindsay, for going out doing what you love.

I think this mask is somewhat smiley and humpty-dumptyish but actually looks pretty real and decent (my favourite classic series Sontaran facially, in fact) - pretty impressive and articulate mask all round - whereas Linx's face looked terribly fake. The seams around his eyes were very obvious too.
I think the constant smile works in the sense he’s constantly looking for a good brawl. The Sontarans truly are the saiyans of the Whoniverse.
Still better than the sissy Sontarans in New Who.

If I wrote for the Sontarans I would write them with Styre's cruelty, Staal's pride and Strax's enthusiasm.
That is a perfect amalgamation of what a Sontaran should be like. But I'd add Lynx's determination and Kaagh's sense of honor to the mix.
Who Cares About User Names? 1 Thank you for acknowledging that Strax has purpose as a sontaran; so many cast him off as embarrassing comic relief (which he tends to be) and forget that this is the exact kind of tactical enthusiasm you would expect in a race of warmongerers.
I want that mix.

The Sontarans were one of the best aliens created for Doctor Who. Their bizarre appearance is startling. Yes--they were bombastic warmongers, but they seemed to have had a rudimentary soldier's code of honor.

Ah, back when Sontarans could scare audiences simply by taking off their helmet.
Did they ever scare audiences, though? I don't remember anyone being literally afraid of them back in the day, to be honest. We saw them as good villains, stand-ins for right-wing warmongers we despised but not literally scary in the same way as the Fendahl or the Cybermen. But, of course, this is just anecdotal!
Elisabeth Sladen ad libbed "Lynx" in this scene, and reacted as she felt Sarah Jane realistically would have, given Sarah's past experience with Sontarans.
New producer Philip Hinchcliffe watching on TV monitors in the production vans, a 1/4 mile down the hill, was so impressed by Lis Sladen's reaction that he ran all the way up the hill to compliment her.
This is what Sontarans should be like, cruel and war-like. Not like in the new series with Strax where he is just there for comedy, that is not how you handle the Sontarans, that's why I really like this and The Time Warrior as the Sontarans are seen as threatening

Not always, the new series still has the episodes ‘Blink’ and ‘Midnight’.
Yeah there’s a lot more build up and the makeup is so bad it’s scary.

Strax is not an ordinary Sontaran. If you want to see ordinary Sontarans in the New Who go watch the two parter from Series 4 The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky. Strax failed and was given the worst punishment for a Sontaran to restore the honour of his clone batch, which was to become a nurse and help the weak. At some point he met The Doctor and was in his debt. That is the reason Strax is a little different from your average Sontaran. I agree its about time we had a normal Sontaran episode

@@MaskedMan66 I am pretty sure they are not meant to be literally creepy either. They are a humanoid stand-in for aggressive fascists, things you might be intimated by and definitely despise but don't feel ''creeped out by'' in the way that you do with Cybermen, Fendahl etc.
@@edward4840 No, it is just due to Holmes's description in his scripts. They are pretty much described as shown here, except actually short and squat and not just average.

When the Sontarans were actually menacing. Strax is the worst thing that could have happened to the show. The Sontarans will never be able to return.
This was my first Episode of Doctor Who ever. Still have the double VHS of this and Genesis of the Daleks! As well as Revenge of the Cyberman and Terror of the Zygons in separate videos
Really impressive how they got the articulation of the mouth given the era and their budget. When it comes to resourcefulness and creativity in make-up and costume effects, the British don't have many peers.

Modern Sci fi stories rely too much on special effects. Granted, classic Dr Who had wobbly special effects, but the stories were very good and well told.
I wish the sontarans were taken seriously like in the old series and not a joke like they are in the new series

The Sontaran Experiment was one of my favourite episodes from the Tom Baker era. It's pre Battlefield Earth.
Why were all the Dr Who monsters scarier in the 1900s
The 1900's? Dr. Who didn't come out until 1963. There are actually two Doctor Who series: the "classic" series are the episodes produced from 1963 to 1989. There was a Dr. Who movie produced in 1996, and then there is a "modern" or "reboot" series that lasted from 2005 to present day.

It's odd that the Doctor didn't tell Sarah Jane that The Sontarans are a clone race after she first met one of them in an earlier adventure,when The Doctor was in his 3rd incarnation.
That's because it hadn't been retroactively added in yet. A large amount of the things the doctor "forgets to explain" are due to changes being made later. I.E gaining the ability to regenerate so the actor can change, gaining the ability to change gender when regenerating, etc.
Strax ain't scary but he certaintly is a warrior :D

How come "The Sontaran Experiment" was recorded entirely on videotape? They usually shot the location scenes on film.

Framerate. Video = 60 fps, film = 25 - 30 fps.

There is an aesthetic difference between the two mediums. Video tends to look harsher and film tends to look more rich and smooth in its colors and textures.
It was probably cheaper.

I am curious as to the physical appearance of the Sontarans, and what it might tell us about the conditions on their native planet. From their blocky and squat looks, it seems to indicate they come from a planet with a greater gravity and denser atmosphere than Earth's.

The high gravity of Sontar means they are shorter than humans, but gain increased strength on other planets.
Shorter than humans but taller than Sarah Jane LOL. Sarah Jane was average height, and the Sontaran is taller than her. The only reason new Sontarans are short is because they looked at a Sontaran standing next to Tom Baker and just assumed they were short heh heh. Tom Baker was nearly 7ft tall

Planet Of Giants from season two was three parts. This story would be excellent at that length for a filler as it is quite good but far to brief.

The Sontarans should have stayed like these scary Warrior Clones in the new series.
But they should have been valuable allies in the Time War against the Daleks.
I doubt they would’ve wanted to work alongside the Timelords, they tried invading Gallifrey back in the classic series and so there’s probably still some tensions between the two species.
i remember seeing the concept art for that robot thing (which was so cool) and then watching the episode and it's a dressed up grocery cart. -_-
