It's from the rock opera Tommy. If you ever get the chance, definitely listen to it and watch the movie. Absolutely worth the couple hours if time and a lot more.
TOMMY was turned into a Broadway musical in the 90’s by Pete and it is FIRE onstage! And now it’s back on Broadway being revived for the second time, and it is a big hit again! I just saw it last month in NYC. Very popular. Pinball Wizard is the big song that closed Act One. ☝️
Thank you very much; Elton turned the Who 3' version into a musically fantastic masterpiece, a top ten single in Europe. Tip: Elton and John Lennon 1974 MSG live with 3 songs Whatever Gets You Through The Night (J.L. US Top Ten)+Lucy In the Sky/Beatles (US no1)+I Saw Your Standing There/Beatles. I don't know how it is with the rights. Keep up going!!!
Indeed, "Tommy" started life as The Who's rock opera, then in 1972 it was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra with a chamber choir, then in 1975 it became an outrageous movie, and finally in 1993 it ended up on the Broadway stage! What a journey! Elton John is great in the film, wearing 4ft high boots, huge glasses, and a wool beanie with a pinball on top. He gets defeated by the deaf-dumb-and-blind kid Tommy, played by Roger Daltrey in his film debut, and it's a blast. Great reaction Shawn!
A friend and I were in NY City in the summer of 1975 and saw the film, Tommy, at a theater in Times Square that had a quadrophonic sound system. First time ever being in a theater like that. The film was incredible. I like both versions of the song.
This is from the movie Tommy, and Elton is the Pinball Wizard in the movie and he sings this song in it while battling Tommy for the crown. It's his song even though The Who wrote it. This was the radio hit as well.
Pete Townsend asked Rod Stewart to do this song and appear in the movie originally. Rod told Elton and Elton said “don’t do it”. So Rod turned Pete down. Pete then approached Elton some time later and Elton said “yes.”
Both are great with your personal styles though of course I do love the Tommy album version when I’m listening to it in its entirety. My older brother at 11 years took me into NYC to see TheNew York City Ballet perform their version of Tommy a year or so after the album came out. I have loved this album ever since!
NOBODYYYYYYYYY COULD PLAY LIKE ELTON COULD SHAWN, THE SLAMMING AND POUNDING OF THOSE KEYS IS OUTRAGEOUS, AND ALWAYS WAS!!! 👍😊 AND SO TOMMY WAS THE DEAF, DUMB AND BLIND KID, GREAT EITHER WAY SHAWN, ( THE WHO ) ALBUM OR THE FILM! 💯😊
Aside from a few actual movie actors, this one features Roger Daltrey as Tommy, Elton John as The Pinball Wizard, Tina Turner as The Acid Queen, Eric Clapton as The Preacher, and also Keith Moon as uncle Ernie. A very weird, but also very entertaining surrealist musical film... When viewing, I recommend using whatever recreational enhancements are legally available in your state. Cheers! ;-] ---- Btw, it's film adap-TA-tion, Man The word you are actually _seeing_ in that Wiki article is adaptation, NOT adaption. The album and movie by The WHO was called "Tommy", and it was the very first Rock Opera. This version is a little different from the movie version, where Sir Elton John plays the Pinball Wizard character. The movie, Directed by Ken Russell is very cool and has a ton of MOVIE STARS in it, including Ann Margaret, Jack Nicholson and Oliver Reed and also a bunch of ROCK STARS, including Tina Turner, Eric Clapton and of course Elton John, plus The WHO. Check It Out!!!
People do full album reviews one song at a time in order. Not in one sitting. You can still mix other requests in. All separate videos. Not that complicated or anymore tome consuming.
Concept album my tush. The worlds very first rock opera. The Who put it on an album first then it took years to finally put it all together. The movie was done starring the Who, and a large number of musicians and a good sprinkling of actors ( famous and semi famous on the way to Famous). All singing. Not all well, and that was on purpose. TH-cam has some snipits. And from time to time somebody will cut the movie into pieces to watch whole. Spent th whole opening day going back for more tickets because they cleared everyone out for each packed house. Went back next paycheck and did it again. After watching the acid queen you must find the movie. Then consider your mind blown.
It's Tommy the rock opera. I was hoping for the performance from the movie.he wears a costume that has like six foot doc martens. I think the costume ended up in a museum or on show somewhere? Tina turner has a cameo as the heroin queen.
Shawn, great reaction! I think this is Elton's last good album of songwriting. If you get a chance, I recommend a really beautiful song off this album, "Pinky". Also great songs are "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me" and " The Bitch is Back"!
You are showing the Caribou album. Its not from that album. Its from the “Tommy” movie soundtrack. Lots of reactors have shown the movie clip, so I don’t know if you coukd show it and get past the copyright. At least view the video for yourself. Its outrageous.
I have always preferred Elton Johns version.
Me too!
Hard to believe this would beat out The Who, but I couldn’t agree more. Elton just kills it and the piano is so cool.

Lots of love for Elton!! 🤩❤️

The best track on this album is Ticking.
In the movie "Tommy" Elton played the Pinball Wizard. You should check out the wild video from that movie.
💖💖💖
Don’t you love how Elton beats the hell out of the piano keys, the movie version is the best

A bit of The Who's Cant Explain in there at the end, very nice.

❤❤❤
Elton during the peak of his glam rock era.

First, listen to the album, then watch the movie. That would be best. Enjoy.
The movie is amazing
Great request and reaction♥
Rod Stewart also has a version of “Pinball Wizard” which is slightly different from The Who and Elton John.
It was a "Rock Opera".
You should see the movie "Tommy" that this song is from.

Should’ve reacted to the video to see The Who preforming with Elton John on the background.
I prefer the Who version released in 1969. But the passage in the film where Elton John plays "Pinball Wizard" with the Who is grandiose.
I am so lucky to been able to watch the start of all this great music starting in the late 50's onward.
It's Tommy the rock opera.

This album is a rock operam. This version is from the movie.........
Which version do you prefer, Shawn?

It's not on my Caribou album from 1974, but was added on as an additional track some years later.
