For many years my father worked on one of these machines until the wee hours in the morning. He passed away in 1995 and I have no idea what happened to his machine. I still have 2 boxes of the pens/needles. I tried to explain this lost "art" to my husband and now he is able to see how it works. Thank you for sharing.

I operated one of these during my apprenticeship as a Binder Cutter and Ruler in Wales between 1969-1974.
Happy memories.I can hear the clickety clack of the cams as the pens rose and fall even now.

So glad you put this out there! I nearly bought one in 1983, but found a printer to buy it that would keep it in use.
It was in the garage of my first home. Watched the owner run out a job an it!

Used to run a ruling machine for Palfrey- Rodd -Purcell back in the 70's. This video brings back lots of memories. Thanks!

our Shaw penruler ended up as bookshelves. Lovely timber that most threw out. We beat the WA Government Printer to it by one hour after it came out of storage in London. It was one of the last that Shaw made. The rollers are mainly beechwood

This machine looks like the Hickok that I ran near the end of the last century. It had a mechanical feeder.

How do the pens stop at the heading? Is there a cam which lifts them, because there's no registration to trigger it.

The pens drop at the headline with curved steel inserts which are thumbscrewed into a slot in a gear that is timed to a gate that stops the paper as it enters the blanket. The cam inserts are various lengths and heights. The low lift inserts are toward the operator and the higher cam inserts are in a deeper slot directly behind. By adjusting the cam inserts you can adjust the lift and drop of the beam. You also can adjust the drop by the pressure on the pens. If you add more pressure it will make the pens drop higher on the page. This works for fine tuning. The lift is more sensitive to pen pressure than the drop.
Pen ruling can be dangerous some of the old guys had missing fingers.
