Since being back in the UK following my recent trip to the states, I've really been struggling with motivation. The weather here hasn't been great which certainly isn't helping, but also I talk about some traumatic news that happened to me recently that's been playing on my mind. I head out in search for some fun and I do this by going without a plan or route in mind, well I do have a plan... and that is simply to just go enjoy myself out on my bike. Unfortunately, things as they quite often do, turn a turn for the worst... this wasn't what I had in mind.

Oh my Thomas. You are indeed such a special soul. We never know what life may throw at us. We all have our own struggles and demons to contend with. I think as we try our best to navigate though all the ups and downs we learn things along the way that prepare us for the unknown. You were prepared even though at that specific moment you thought you weren’t. Life is short. And unfortunately many don’t realize this until it’s too late. But it’s never too late to make a difference. I’ve come to realize that it isn’t what you GET in life it’s what you GIVE that truly matters. Just the smallest insignificant things at times are the most profound pleasures. For example I always keep a tin of candy in my drawer at work. Every now and then I randomly leave one on a coworkers desk. Just seeing them smile upon its discovery is so heartwarming. I know it’s “just a candy” but it brings such joy. One day at a time my friend. Keep smiling and keep discovering. Not every ride is meant to be epic but every opportunity to ride is a blessing 🤗🇨🇦🚴‍♂️

I lost my grandad 2 years ago and still can’t get my head round the fact he’s gone. I still drive to his house and remember him and my grandma. Was the only constant in my life. Weirdly I remember them a lot when I’m out on the bike. Feels like there with me pushing me up the climbs. Love the idea of compass riding

Sorry to hear about your granda choking, that must have been horrible mate. You've inspired me to take a first aid course, my Dad almost choked to death a few years back and someone that knew first aid saved him. It's been on my mind to take a course since then but hearing you say that today had been the kick I need. Cheers mate and all the best.

Lack of Motivation...... leading to what your talking about feeling down is called Avolition (i think) and is a very real condition. Especially prevalent after traumatic events such as you describe with your Grandad. Well done for getting deep and getting the message out there.
    Normal lack of motivation.
I first came accross it in another sport after huge competitive events. Normal life and work on a Monday were a nightmare after the huge high's of competing internationally.
This is when you need a plan - a mini goal as such. Probably several of them.

  • @andrew30m
    @andrew30m ปีที่แล้ว

I did the same yesterday 😂 struggling to motivate for a route, so simply went off and turned as the mood took me to explore the area on my bike. Then followed my nose back which was in Leeds rush hour traffic, not something I’ve done before and whilst not pleasant gained some confidence that it’s not the end of the world.

Basically the same ugly af weather rn in Poland - 16-20 degres, grey, pouring. Those up & downs are quite hard to manage especially if you were riding in such nice places, with full sun, etc. I'm always struggling during rain - checking the weather app and seeing that this gonna continue for several days - not helping :D. Best of wishes for your grandpa. First aid is like a helmet/lid basically. Gotta have it, don't wanna use it/check it. :) Keep up the good job with both keeping ur beloved ones alive and putting that riding content up.

That is pretty much how i do most of my 'exploring' rides. I just use my sense of direction, the sun and other visual clues to work out where I am. Sometimes its good to detach yourself from the tech. Hope your grandfather makes a speedy recovery.

    Well done fella 👏👏

Very common - set yourself some mini goals to achieve. Goals that your can tick off on your way to your next event. Even of they are just PB's on the indoor trainer. Maybe even just "complete" all routes in that popular indoor app.

It's those moments on the bike, especially when you are not in a great headspace that you can just say sod this and pack it in. Or you can actively make the choice to embrace the suck and turn a shit day into an epic one. What a great cycling story you have now for that day out... Great job!

thanks for sharing your experience with your grandpa Thomas. I had to do CPR on a guy at work who was found unconscious in the toilets; it's a flurry of panic, wonder, adrenaline, etc. He never came 'round unofrtunately. You and your grandpa (and family) are very lucky he came through and you are bang on, with how quickly things can change, so cherish every moment. Even though you don't want it, many will consider you a hero, for taking action. That's the important part buddy! (even better when your 'skilled' sister can help ya too)

I have been in a similar situation. I was fine just after but on my way home I had to pull over because I was shaking and went into some kind of shock. It takes ages to get over it and on reflection I think I may have needed some kind of professional counselling. I like you hated the fact that people thought I had done some big heroic thing when all I did was a human thing that I luckily had training for. For you its got to be worse as it was a loved one mine was a stranger. Even describing the situation has brought it back so be prepared for it to stay with you mate ... sorry !

Nice one Thomas! the joys of British weather! I remember one time I had to shelter in a old phone box because it was thunder and lightning and persisting it down with rain and another time on a country road one part was completely soaked and then suddenly like someone had drawn a line it was totally dry..... 😁

Good to see you back out on the bike fella. Glad to here that your grandad is recovering, I would 100% recommend people doing some form of first aid training, you never wish to have to use it but if you do your actions could make a huge difference to a loved one, cycling buddy or complete stranger 👍

Thx Thomas for the refreshing video. I enjoyed the whole thing. I hope talking through your recent family experience helps you to process the stress and ptsd of the event. Regarding your recent lack of motivation, I think you are going through a recurring process for avid UK cyclists and youtube creators. Basically a combination of the strain of the sustained effort to produce quality youtube content, plus coming down from the highs of many outstanding recent trips abroad. Best to be patient, the lull will not last too long. Motivation will return given your passion for the bike and for expressing your creativity. Some suggestions for the next month or so: share some of your experiences with structured training; train for some hill climbing events; pick some of your favorite coffee shops 50-80k away and take us on rides to each of them; ride with some new people - you are a very strong rider, reach out to to some local racers and go out with them on their recovery or endurance rides; find a local velodrome and give that a try. Free your cycling mind!

Always best to have a break or holiday after a big event.
As you have built up and built up.than you do the event everything feels flat.
    Week off fixes that
Just like a boxer training for a fight
He wound rest after the big event
Same as pro cyclist after Tour de France
A massive high brings a low
