  • In the latest Five-minute Friday (OK OK I know it's not five minutes!) I examine the Basotho Gun War of 1880-1881. It is a conflict almost forgotten by history but it is an incredibly important war as it is the reason that the small Kingdom of Lesotho is not part of South Africa.
If you are on Instagram and like looking at photos of the world's battlefields then check me out

His descendants are the Principal Chiefs of Ha Maama or Roma, where the National University of Lesotho is situated, my home town. He was a great patriot.

Thanks so much!!! My Great Grandfather served in the Cape Yeomanry and was killed in the battle of Kalibani. My Grandfather who served in the Cape Mounted Rifles in the Boer War always maintained that prior to embarking on the ill fated Basuto Gun War campaign the Cape Yeomanry troopers had begged for swords or pistols to be issued in addition to their outdated single shot Snyder rifles but their request was denied and as the saying goes "The Rest is his History"

There is no where in the world where the British did anything that benefited the local people. The Aristocratic British Government sent their excess subjects to subdue the people of the lands captured all over the world so the wealth of those lands could be taken.
