I've been taking scrap metal to the scrap yard for years, one thing I've been doing to make my buckets last in the sun is spray painting them with metallic paint, I can paint about 4 buckets with one can, it gives them a much longer life span
The mylar bags reminded me of my silver and gold buckets, I'm sure it would be a good way to jazz up the garden buckets and block out the light at the same time.

Yay!!! Happy Friday!!! I've seen these at Target. Pretty nice size.
I'm having trouble getting seeds to start. don't know if it's the weather or the tides of the moon. But I'm a bit behind. Thank goodness we have a long growing season so I can start some more. Query, how close together do you allow your seeds when growing microgreens? I put a tablespoon of bok choi seeds on a starting mat ( container with paper towel) and I instead of most of them starting like usual, it seems that they rotted in place except on the edges. I wondered if I had too many seeds, but i see peopl with a whole layer of seeds and they come up like thick carpeting. I am going to go back and watch some of your seed starting videos to see if I did something wrong. It's been so easy with these seeds in the past so I'm a bit worried that they didn't germinate like normal.
Thanks for all of these experiements. I know a few people who are afraid to get started because they don't have everything just right ( I am often guilty of that) and I wish more people would watch your vids to see how they can start with pretty much anything. The Living plant part of it is the hardest , i just found a plastice contianer in the office break room that held walnuts. Heck , That could be a grow box! LOL ( I took it home)
    Cheers!

I had lettuce that wouldn’t germinate. I finally bought another bag from different mfg and they sprouted in 3 days inside under grow lights in Rockwool cubes.

Mike, I love your content. Keep it up! I’ve been growing squash for 3 years now in Kratky buckets. They grow so well. However, once they are to fruiting stage, the plants are drinking so much H2O daily, I can’t keep up with the smaller buckets. I switch the plants to 20 gallons trash cans (About $20 at walmart, doubt they are food grade though…) so that I can go closer to a week before I have to add more water and nutrients. Just wanted to share, that’s what works for me. And I’m usually harvesting a zucchini+ everyday from each plant through the summer!

I got 5 food grade 5 gal buckets, one 6 inch bucket grow basket lid, and expanded clay pebbles. I can sit the bucket in the sun but under the edge of my camper roof. But here in Louisiana we have squash vine borers that will chew through six feet of lead to kill a squash plant so I`m thinking of trying Sugar Baby melons, cantaloupe, or cucumbers. I have lights to boost growth but I think the white buckets will have to be wrapped with cardboard and duct tape to keep light out. I`ve had some much stress from my control freak relatives nearby that most of my energy is wasted trying to recover. "HE BOUGHT SOLAR PANELS! WE OPENED HIS PACKAGE AND IT WAS A GIANT BAG OF RICE! HE`S CRAZY!"

Apologies if this is too obvious, but whenever I see yellow leaves, I check... water levels, temp, lighting, mold, bugs. Usually it's the water getting way lower than I expected, or I filled up too high and drowned an air root.
