- In this candid (and hilarious) interview, actor Joe Flanigan sits down with the Salty Nerds to talk about his career and his friendship with Jason Momoa and David Hewlett.
Joe was a blast to speak with as he discusses his time playing John Sheppard on Stargate Atlantis, how he was responsible for getting Jason Momoa cast on the show, some of the pranks he played on David Hewlett, and how he actually tried to buy the Stargate from MGM. The Salty Nerds also grill him about his time working with Jean-Claude Van Damme in the film Six Bullets!
But most of all, the Nerds just really wanted to spend time with Joe's dog, Newman, who makes a special guest appearance in the interview. (You know, when they aren't talking about Joe Flanigan's role of The Military in seasons 2 & 3 of AppleTV's SEE.)

@metalzonemt-2 Initially, they moved the city to Luna. Due to the Pegasus Gates overriding the Milky Way Gates as the primary, it became the de facto SGC.
The plans for season 6 were for Atlantis to be forced to return to the Pegasus Galaxy. I'd imagine with a fleet of puddle jumpers as well as multiple BC-304 able to lend support, they could build auxiliary facilities near the Atlantis site for things like water and energy production.
When Atlantis left, they could have moved the gate up there. This would have provided extra layers of security for Earth and limit the amount of damage by incidents. Example: The Prior plague could have been isolated quicker due to the travel time between Luna and Earth.
I just found this interview after rewatching SG:A. I can’t believe that they just buried a gold mine such as this franchise. It has a lot of fans around the world, rebooting SG would be a hit. Imagine what they would accomplish with todays SFX and technology. I really hope that I get to see a new Stargate series during my lifetime. However, please make sure it doesn’t end up in the hands of Alex Kurtzman.
Yeah, MGM was really stupid not to realize what they had.
it seems to be in the hands of Amazon, so that gives me zero hope it will be good. If we get more it won't be the in the style of the old shows. It will be an 8 episode season with a stupid story and little to none of the great character stuff we always got from longer 22 episode seasons.
I know right? it is an extremely tragically underrated show and because it is set in the present I think it makes everything so much more interesting (and imagine the political intrigue they could add today, would be so much more intricate and complicated even)
No reboot. There is positive proof that it would not be a good thing. We need someone that respects and loves this franchise to carry it forward. Not backwards into the real of WOKEGATE
I still can’t decide which series I like more, SG1 or Atlantis. It’s so rare that a spin-off is as precious to me as the original, and it’s because of the amazing cast, crew, and writers. You could tell that they all loved what they were doing and because of that I loved watching them do it.

None....Universe. JK.....I did love Universe though, cause it was more serious and dark (got deeper too with "Signal"). Hate it got canceled.

This was a great interview! Just last year watched the Atlantis for the first time. In the early episodes (or the first?) they were in the chopper, Jack and John and they both like grunted something short and looked at each other, I thought it was like subtle nod to them being very like minded (or like passing the torch). Joe telling about the advice he got on the airplane from Richard makes the scene all the more hilarious, imo.

I sure hope amazon picks up stargate franchise again and hopefully cast and even make joe flanigan series producer as well. I would definitely want jason momoa and david hewlett comeback and cameo with their characters, maybe even be on recurring roles.

This was awesome! Joe Flanigan's Shepard was tops on Stargate Atlantis and totally agree the episodes The Storm/The Eye were awesome, but I never thought of them as Die Hard style. But I totally get it, I always just saw Shepard as going full Big Boss/Solid Snake personally just for all the stealth tactics, less quippy than Mclain than I remember, damnit Im going to watch Stargate Atlantis now.

Awesome interview!!! Great questions and Joe was so engaging and open, He definitely was having a great time too! Love, love love SGA-even now so many years later! I haven’t found another show that has the level of chemistry Joe and the other cast members had together and the sets/special effects were superb. i’m still rewatching over and over. It says something special when so many people are still fans , fifteen years out!! My only wish is Joe would find another series to grace us with his talent for bringing another great character alive! Thanks again for this great interview!!

What a great interview! Great questions and what a fun person to listen to! So much was covered and he is a great story teller. Joe Flanigan is one of those fantastic instances where I like the actor as much, or maybe even more than the character he’s known for. And I am a huge fan of a John Sheppard! It would be absolutely amazing if he could be a part of SGA again. He’s really got a good sense for what the fans love about the the stories and characters of the show. tptb should listen to his insights!

Retrospectively, i would like to see SGA played out differently, to explore Classical Elements, and using a combination and extention of other Episodes Tech in the franshise
Season 1 byside some of the orginal runs episodes mostly of the surface would focus on being mostly deep underwater itself, still with ticking clock, but months instead of hours
Season 2 mostly the same as the orginal run, altough instead of shield/cloak ending being City itself being teleported within dormant volcano
Season 3 would involved being initally resposible of causing the death of the native people and for bringing the wraith to them, add some drama reputation towards the Expedition Teams
During this season, it would have shown landlocked cityships are not uncommon prior the war, and even incorporate several land vehicles garage within piers
Season 3 end / season 4 beginning would have seen the volcano becoming active as response from season 3, however the City is able to hold up the shields long enough to cool down the lava
At the end of season 4, they are been doxed by said native people, causing again the Wraith to find them, retrying the wormholedrive -> Space Stargates,
Season 5 would be similair to "Space:1999", with adrift but with enough power for shields and limited subspace thrust to reach their intended Planet, dramatically drop into the ocean once more
Teleporting of the entire City-Ship would primarly done through the WormholeDrive requires both enormous energy and precision to a remote jump,
The latter could be bypassed by using active wormhole connected through 2 stargates, and using MorganLefay's Ancient Transporter obelisk on larger scale
The former would be that each valid site would have its own power source, Lantea/Tarantis had Geothermals, perphaps a 'Trinity'-episode within a space station/gate
Additionally, the S01E02-3 would have early acquisition of 3-5 fully charged ZPMS, but combination of SG1 ''Zero Hour' & SGA 'Hide and Seek', would reduce this to 4 tainted ZPM, unable to use
The tainting itself was more visible and acts more like a plastic wrapper around a candy bar for the ghost, only patically licking the contents, but also make the ZPM uselss, unless fully cleaned up
We'd just be happy if Stargate came back. lol.
both shows ended so badly, like to see more of the Atlantis tech explored... more exploration without other race trying to kill you.
