    First thanks for the excellent firmware. For those interested I have just created a set of mini instructions for this firmware that you can print out, cut and stick back to back and laminate. It is small so will fit inside the original box the TS100 came in. www.dropbox.com/s/31t7fxp48avg14l/TS100%20instructions.pdf?dl=0

    Just updated, thank you so much, I swear this soldering iron just keeps getting better. I have an idea that could be useful for a future revision of the software, I'd really like to see the current temperature of the iron right when you plug it in on the main menu. Sometimes it can be a bit difficult to press both buttons to get it into the cooldown mode so I'll just unplug it and plug it back in and the stock firmware you could press the other button to see current temperature.
    Another improvement is when the iron is heated up could you possibly make a delayed button response, I said before that pressing both buttons to get into cooldown mode can be kind of difficult, so maybe when the iron is heated up there could be a button delay to check if both buttons are pressed so it can go into cool down mode instead of temperature change, either that or a long press of the button closer to the display will go into cool down mode sort of like how you have boost mode.

    • @ralimtek
      @ralimtek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi,
      Can I ask why you want to view the current temperature on the idle screen? I have been thinking about having it as a part of the cycle on the idle screen (when it shows the graphics). However, when people ask about this they dont specify what the use case is for wanting the temp on the main screen? You can press both buttons at once on the main screen to view the temperature from the main screen without heating up the iron?
      I will look into extending the button sense time out even longer,. At one point I had it so that long press could exit soldering mode, but after the number of emails I received about people accidentally exiting all the time, I removed the option.

    • @manbearkremer
      @manbearkremer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is getting both buttons to register at the same time to get into cool down mode, it wants to go into temperature change instead. Its about a 1 in 4 chance it will go into cool down mode when pressing both buttons. Maybe its just a problem with my iron

    • @ralimtek
      @ralimtek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I have found that some users have an issue with the timing requirements (100mS). I agree that this can be hard to get used to, and so I'm probably going to increase this tolerance in 1.17. However, that does come at the cost of buttons feeling less responsive. It's a constant tradeoff between making the double press easier and trying to prevent other button use feeling slow.

    Very nice ... I'm gearing up to (first) modify the stock firmware for the TS80! May I ask which IDE do you use and wether there's any horribly time-consuming gotchas one should be aware of ?

    • @ralimtek
      @ralimtek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The stock firmware requires IAR for building the firmware image.
      I use Atollic as my re-write is from scratch and shares no code.
      Plenty of gotchas in the firmware, but if your modifying from a base these should be handled by the base firmware. It entirely depends on how your planning to modify the firmware.

    How could you input all those features in this New firmware? I dont understand so much about quantity of information is suported in microchips, but in this case, you put a lot more information than de original. How much more information can be add in this ts100 circuit? Congrats for the work.

    • @ralimtek
      @ralimtek  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mostly by removing the feature where you could use a computer to edit a text file over USB to change the settings. I replaced this with the long menu on the iron itself. This allows for changing the settings in the field and also freed up most of the room for adding the extra features. This actually freed a lot of room so there is still around 50% of the space on the microcontroller left for future expansion of features. At this point, there is more than enough room to add as many features as people can think of :)

    • @francopieruccinifaria9454
      @francopieruccinifaria9454 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've updated the ts100 and everything went well. I have some points using this new firmware. Is it my impression or the tip temperature is now more locally concentrated, where is the solder used? In the original firmware it seems that in the part at the beginning of the metal part (next to button A), it used to warmed up more and was even a bit dangerous. And now with almost 430 ° C, this part is not even hot. Has this really been improved?
      Another thing is, if now with the temperature reaching 450 ° C, it can somehow damage the ts100 circuits or this 50°C added in the max temp are safe about that?

    It is possible some lower voltages may cause a failure on the TS-100. I have a yet unverified quibble regarding possible damage by including an almost useless power option of 3 Lipo cells in the menu. I mean what kind of decent heat can 3 half charged cells give anyway? At close to cut-out at around 2.1v per cell, the Vgs of the SOIC dual MOSFET may fall low enough that both FET's can run to destruction (outside SOA in linear mode). Q1's datasheet shows the lowest Vgs should be 3v. Max power to the tip I understand is 3 to 4 amps, so a valid test may be to water cool the tip while varying Vcc to observe any voltage range where heater voltage is under Vcc minus 0.5v while current is over 2amps (IE: any condition where Q1 is >1watt dissipation). I don't own a TS-100 yet, but you may want to test the V-drop across Q1 before including this option on further updates? (or include some warning..)

    • @ralimtek
      @ralimtek  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi,
      Lower voltages do not cause any issues with the MOSFETs as far as I have tested down to 8V (note firmware cuts out at 10V).
      I have run an iron off 8V for an hour when testing this for safety without any noticeable increase in temperature on the MOSFETs.
      Remember the tip has a resistance in the range of 9-10 ohms, so at 10V it can draw a max of 1A (but practically it draws less).
      The gate on the FET's is driven with the incoming dc voltage (so for my tests it was still sitting at around -6-7V at the gate) which resulted in no more heat generation than when running on the full 24V power supply.
      3S is actually a usable option for small joints or in a pinch. Quite a few users use the iron at 3S cells when in the field when running it quickly off a small pack to fix a small wire that came loose. The heat-up time is still bearable for one joint on 3S.
      As of my current testing, I have not found any warning necessary when running the unit with the current cutoff of 10V. This will be lowered to 3V/cell in future which is why I undertook the test on two of my units before I was willing to consider the lower input cutoff.
      Naturally my 2 units could be lucky, but also knowing that there is a large user base using 3S without issue I doubt the majority of units differ from mine.

    ...I broke mine today because I couldn`t update it.. DFU wasn`t working correctly somehow..
    since we have two TS100 at home, I try`d switching the PCB with the STM32 which is plugged to the main PCB..
    And it worked.. tried the defective one in the one which was working and It doesnt worked..
    so it`s the STM32 PCB which is somehow "broken".. I guess the FW got corrupt, but I cannot Update it bc Windows doesn`t let me acces it ( device is greyed out, cannot be opened )
    but the STM32 PCB has four solder pads.. maybe it can be flashed manually ?

      The plug on that power adapter will not fit the TS100 (TS100 has a 2.5mm barrel jack).
      The specifications for output power are fine but you would need to change the output connector to use it with the iron.
      If it is for your current laptop then you probably dont want to change the plug :D

    I'm loving the newest firmware with auto rotating screen but I was wondering if you could add another feature. I tend to solder at 340C most of the time and I can't find a way to change the working startup temp from the default 300C. It's my understanding you removed the config.txt where we would normally make that change so it would be awesome if we could get it in the menu.

    • @ralimtek
      @ralimtek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The firmware allows you to adjust the setting as you go, and then when you exit the soldering mode it will save the setting. So if you set the temperature, then press both buttons to exit, it will save that temperature for the future.

      Ben, I’ve only had my SainSmart Pro32 Soldering iron for 1 week I’m using the Ralim firmware V2.00a5 (Oct 19 2017) which I think is brilliant. Going by what you said if a 6S battery is used and it’s fully charged the voltage (25.2V) it would be above 24V so it would be safer to use a 5S battery to prolong the life of internals. How often is the Ralim firmware updated? Great video and very informative.

    • @ralimtek
      @ralimtek  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome, 6S does seem to work for most people, but just not guaranteed to work by the manufacturer. The one that we use at my work almost all day has been running on a 6S battery for a few months without issue. Its just I don't officially endorse it as its out of spec :) Generally It updates as fast as I have time to work on it really, and its features are really driven by what the communitiy asks for on github.

      One last question. I saw Eevblog and Marco Reps show that the iron once heated up doesn't draw full power anymore when the temperature drops while soldering. (in fact only 10-12Watts were used) Is this something that is fixed in the Ralim firmware or was this adressed at all at some point? If often got stuck on bigger components and had to turn the temperature up into ranges I wasn't comfortable with. If these measurements from eevblog/Marco Reps affect all stock firmware TS-100 then my problems actually would make sense now.

    • @ralimtek
      @ralimtek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, If you hold down the button as you connect it to usb and it enters DFU mode, then there should be no issue. Just reflash it while its in DFU mode and ensure the file extension changes to .RDY . If that occurs there should be no issue in re-flashing the firmware. If this still fails it is often fixed by trying another computer. Windows 7/8 appear to work the best with the original DFU bootloader at the moment.

    • @ralimtek
      @ralimtek  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi,
      Mac's tend to be hit and miss with the build in uploader, with some users having it just work and others having it never work for them. If the bootloader rejects the update it will just not flash the unit, it won't leave your iron in a broken state. You can try the ts100.hex file in the repository as well and just see if it will work for you. However, if the updater does not want to take the update nicely its a bit of a pest to try and get it to work. One thing would be to try renaming the update files to be in upper case only.
      Let me know if you still have issues and I will try and help further :)

    • @ralimtek
      @ralimtek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      marikgl Which HEX file are you using?
      The most common cause for this is people not using the ts100.hex file from the releases page, or your operating system is not Windows. Some people have luck with Linux and Mac but the DFU code assumes Windows behaviour so it can be problematic.

      Awesome iron, awesome video. Thanks man. I just got my TS-100 a few days ago and while I haven’t had much of a chance to play with it too much, first impressions are amazing.
      I was dreading the inclusion of a token gesture conical tip so I have one on order from China. I was floored to see a proper tip, so I’m effectively going to have two. I think the manufacturer must have received enough “feedback” and decided to just include them.

    • @ralimtek
      @ralimtek  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi,
      For a bench power supply, the iron runs best on 19-24V. I often use an old laptop power supply, (19V 3.4A). Any 60W+ 19V power supply works well. Also, a lot of laptops used the 2.5mm plug. If you're going to use it with a battery, I recommend a 5S battery for most work, and a 6S if you need that extra 'oomph'. Make sure to use a proper battery charger with the lithium batteries so that they are kept balanced.

      Hi,
      It's become very well documented that you basically have to be running windows 7 or 8 for it to work every time. Windows 10 sometimes works but is hit and miss.
      Linux and mac work if you're very lucky. Also ensure you are flashing the latest firmware from the releases page :)

    • @ralimtek
      @ralimtek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Currently, the bootloader (DFU) is closed source. So I cannot do anything to attempt to fix it. I have looked at creating a replacement, still working on that :)
      In windows 10 it appears to work so long as you do not have any antivirus that tries to scan files on the fly. As the dfu expects the file to be written in a specific order, it can't have anything interfering... Well so far that is what has worked for me :)
