Visiting zeekr in 2 weeks. Cool. The best I can do is a rental EV out of Kunming while holidaying there for the next 3 weeks. 🤣 I hope to rent a range of Chinese EVs as available 😎
I am Chinese American, I travel to and from China a lot, and I think Geely, BYD, Great Wall, Chery, these brands are reliable and I see the most models in China!
I live in Beijing. A friend, who’s very well acquainted w/the EV market as an investor, recently bought a Li Mega, which competes directly with the Zeekr 009 in the high end EV MPV market. He compared both, among others, and felt the Li was the better car. To my eye, it’s also much better looking (I find the Zeekr ugly, but there’s no accounting for taste). The deal sealer, if it was my choice, would be the way the interior can be modified to suit different uses, on the fly, from passenger, to cargo, to camper. The Zerkr is far less versatile. Performance wise, both are insanely quick & have impressive driving range, but Li also has much faster supercharging.
It’s a golden battery because in Chinese culture gold is associated with power, wealth, longevity and happiness. In Box Hill, Melbourne, we’ve got a skyscraper with glass that appears gold at certain times of day (it is bronze at other times) and named ‘Golden Age’ for that reason. I don’t think the person who named that battery is losing their job anytime soon!
It is a good thing Australia accepts EVs from the PRC. All the best technology will be available in Australia. All that is missing is abundant L3 charging at 500 kWh. Mad Max won't be happening in Australia because electricity is affordable & plentiful in Australia.
"Electricity is affordable and plentiful in Australia". You have to be kidding! According to the energy market operator, we are at deep risk of blackouts during summer. Why? We have inadequate baseload generation to power our needs.
I’ve been saying for a year now that Geely is going to be the New VW group. I bought the Geely/Mercedes/Smart/Brabus #1 in October last year, it’s epic and I will never sell it. 428hp 543 Nm torque 0-60 3.7 seconds 9.8 seconds 0-100 mph 12.1 seconds quarter mile. At £43,450 it’s not cheap but it’s a luxury fully loaded B section small crossover SUV.😻
Owning world-famous car brands and companies really made Geely looks much better than other (if not all) Chinese car companies. Rumored that a Chinese company is trying to buy a Stellantis car brand (or more than one brand). BYD SHOULD do this. But I guess that company is Geely again and again.
Geely has already made a deal to product/design their future EV-cars with NIO for BaaS (battery swapping). Sam does not want to mention this but the deal has been done. You cannot find any information about this from Sam's channel.
It’s great to hear that you’re returning to China. I hope you have enough time to notice how much things have changed since your last stay. I also hope you get to open some dialogue with new people. Dialogue is such an important thing for international cooperation.

I’ve watched as battery pack cost have reduced and their efficiency, and motor and systems efficiency have improved (particularly noticeable with the key Chinese brands, that exterior car designs evolve to having less efficiency, to provide more design variations. Tesla started all of this, and to achieve efficiency at the outset their designs had to be focused on aerodynamic efficiency , which has limited design and body configurations, creating a “sameness” that has gotten a little boring. So, will Tesla follow the more recent trend and be able to expand their design variety? I think the consumer wants that, and Tesla needs that to continue their sales growth.
Hi Sam, I was not listening 100% to your video, but I seemed to hear, I got the impression, that you did not think Volvo was a great brand? In the UK the hallmark of being Middle Class was to be able to tell people you had a Volvo. No-one looked down on people who owned a Volvo. Any way ti does not detract from your point that Geely via Volvo etc are coming and new ICE vehicles will be history by 2030.
I'm with you there in your analysis. Only, the market is still growing so much that there isn't a fight like that. Tesla will sell every car they make. The main Chinese brands will too. If Us-European-&-our-asian companie washout it is because they have bet on sandbagging the EV & SWB conversion banking on ICE and bailouts their sponsored politicians will craft for them. If ford & gm had follow through in good faith with their public declarations even beginning 5-6 years ago, they'd be in there adding to the expansion of the market. As it was, they outright lied. I like that 007! The 009? bit ig and boxy for me, though wow!
If you are amazed by the 009 you should know that Geely regards this as what we call a pre-alpha in gaming.
