To all of you complaining about 'Clara Who', that complaint is getting a bit old isn't it? The companion is supposed to be the star. Just watch any episode of Season 1-5. Let's take a look at Series 8 so far: 1. Deep Breath - Doctor/Clara 2. Into the Dalek - Doctor 3. Robot of Sherwood - Doctor/Clara 4. Listen - Clara 5. Time Heist - Doctor 6. The Caretaker - Doctor/Clara/Danny 7. Kill the Moon - Clara 8. Mummy on the Orient Express - Doctor 9. Flatline - Clara/Doctor So there have been two episodes so far where Clara was a bigger focus than the Doctor (arguably three). The Doctor is still far more prominent than he was in earlier episodes (he only has about 20 minutes of screen time in the series premiere Rose). So shut up. This is not Clara Who. Stop looking for things to complain about. Series 8 has been fantastic so far!
Thank you! I completely agree with you, and I keep asking to people why they're still watching the show if they don't like Clara? To me, this show is mainly about an old alien's journey and the stories of his companions. And right now it is Clara's story. So why watching it if it's only to hate it and complain about it? Do they feel better after saying bad stuff about it or about the characters? It is such a wonderful show which is always changing and evolving, and sometimes it just goes a different way than yours so why don't they just let go and move on to something else? To keep good memories of it. I just don't get it because as soon as it won't be what I used to like, I know I won't hang on to it, I'll be sad but I'll move on (like I did when other tv shows I loved ended). I don't want to hate my favorite show. And I'll always remember the good times and what it did for me at some point in my life, how it helped me. I should really stop reading comments on TH-cam and Facebook, I'm tired of seeing so much negativity about such a positive show and its wonderful characters. Am I the only one who liked every companion during their run? And don't compare them all the time? As same as the different areas? I really just enjoy it so far and I like all the series, all the Doctors and all the companions. Seriously, am I the only one?
chahayden Don't worry, you're not the only one. :) I'm just along for the ride too, sometimes it goes in directions I don't appreciate as much, but other times this show has blown my mind. It is what it is and I love it for what it is, how it's constantly changing and growing. Sometimes you gotta let go to keep up cause I don't see the point on imposing all of ones personal preconceptions and expectations into it. All the doctors and companions have been great, and Clara is awesome, why the hate? I get sick of reading about all the complaining too, dunno why I bother. lol
Well said, Clara is an excellent companion I don't know why there's so much hate for her, she's clever, witty, and has numerous times stood up to The Doctor's thick headedness the same as Rose or Donna. Add to that that she's very pleasant to look at, and I don't really see how anyone could dislike her.
Also worth remembering that Jenna Coleman has a more established career than most companions (excepting perhaps, Billie Piper and arguably Catherine Tate) on joining the Who family (Waterloo Road, Emmerdale, Titanic, Dancing on the Edge, Death Comes to Pemberley) so it would seem a waste not to use her talent/experience to carry some storylines. In my opinion, this series is rapidly turning into one of my favourites and I've been watching since 22/11/63.
I don't think it's becoming "Clara Who". I love the Doctor in this season. That being said, I am really done with Clara and will not be sad when she goes. Sometimes you click with a companion and sometimes you wanna stuff them in a closet. Just a personality conflict. At least that's where I'm coming from. Still, she is much better in this series than the last half of 7. I find the Doctor is getting a lot more hate than Clara. Perhaps just too much negativity on all sides. Change is hard, but people need to adapt. lol
What I love about Doctor Who is that we (the audience) only experience the Doctor through his companion. By having a Doctor Clara, I think we have a nice glimpse into why the Doctor has been or always has had a strange demeanor (as emphasized in 'Kill the Moon'). Thanks for the wonderful episode!
Both the Pandorica and the TARDIS in siege mode were designed to hold back anything that would try to get in or out, and they probably use the same technology to achieve that, so it's no surprise they look alike
Peter Capaldi said that to get two episodes filmed at the same time, to meet the production schedule, this episode was Doctor lite. Peter filmed his scenes in the TARDIS for this episode and whilst Jenna was filming her scenes, he was doing Mummy on the Orient Express
One of the train’s featured in Flatline is clearly numbered A113. This designation is often featured in films created by former students of California Institute of the Arts, referring to the classroom used by graphic design and character animation students. As such, A113 has appeared (with varying degrees of subtlety!) in TV shows such as The Simpsons and Family Guy plus movies including Toy Story, Monsters University and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
Very true. It's b/c I didn't know what to call it and that guy said he wrote in the script that he called it a rubix cube, so I'm just calling it that.
Flatline is my favorite episode of Series 8, and the first DW episode to make me scream out loud from a jump scare since Blink. When that hand from the Boneless comes out of nowhere and grabs that guy in the tunnel, I jumped out of skin. Didn't see it coming at all. Great job!
***** of course other people write for it. but as long as he's head writer he'll have to be heavily involved with the production of each episode. you even heard in the video that moffat and the flatline writer had discussions about plots characters and monsters. so if he wanted to plant seeds for future arcs within sombody elses episode, he could easily do so
Ah this episode was great! I love this series but this episode brought back that element that I most love about Doctor Who. I love how they are things that I have no clue about them at all. I like seeing something new and fresh. The concept of boneless (silly name) was brilliant. I love the 2 dimension and 3 dimension concept. Just like Moffat said why didn't anyone think of this before? I love character stories which are what this series is trying to delve into, but I really like compelling stories like these. When it's time for Moffat to leave, I really don't mind James Matheison taking his role. He impressed me with his creativity which is what I look for in a show runner, but we'll have to see.
honestly yeah the thing i loved most about series 8-9 is 12 and Clara's relationship and their character development and their story and just everything to be honest.. also 12 is my favourite doctor but i like 13 as well. I'm really excited for series 12, are you? :D
Flat line was my first favorite Peter Capaldi Dr. Who episode. The humor was great, I loved the 2 D monsters, and I really loved Clara taking on the roll of the Dr. Well written show.
Great episode, the setting and twist on the murals were sublime. The chilling special effects are awesome. One small nitpicky-thing for it though, is that the monster's name. Boneless?? as in boneless chicken??? Why not called it 2dis, i loved that word :/
So they did a lot of filming down on the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway in the off-season - I assume the gravel patch is somewhere near Winchcombe, while the tunnel was probably the Toddington Tunnel. Trainspotters on other threads have pointed out the train is apparently a "BR Class 117", which dates back to the 1960s and (preserved models aside) hasn't been used for mainline services since the 1990s (with one operator holding on until 2000).
You are correct for the tunnel. However as is the way with most T.V programmes, this episode is shot in various locations and stitched together to become a believable scene. For example, the scene where they were gathered in the shed with the speaker system trying to communicate with the Boneless was actually filmed at the Barry Island Railway, in Wales. Also, if I am correct in thinking that by "Gravel patch" you mean the place at 8:29, that is not a place at Winchcombe. I have been to the GWR 3 times in my lifetime so far, and I also have a friend who works there and there is nowhere around the station that looks like that, so that scene was probably not filmed there. As for the DMU they used, while the Class 117's remained in mainline service with a few companies until the 90's/00's, the colour scheme in use on the DMU in question is a Mid-Late 60's livery. (As you can guess from my avatar, I'm a railway enthusiast)
I loved this episode like all others of Capaldi, only one question: if a tardis in its true form is a cylinder, why is a tardis in its miniature true form a cube?
Matt I still find The Waters of Mars, Midnight and The Satan Pit scary. I never found The Empty Child scary and as for Blink, I just find it fascinating. A couple of moments in Series 5-6 have been scary but ever since it became Clara Who in series 7, I've found her so annoying that it can't be scary.
So you apparently found Rose Who and Donna Who scarier? I'd argue my own point (see first sentence) further, but I'm not likely to change your mind and do anything but give myself a headache. Except for this: New Who is definitely as much about the Companions as it is about the Doctor. I strongly recommend that you get over it.
Both are great but Doctor Donna's knowledge was imbued to her when she touched The Metacrisis Doctor's hand post regeneration. It was instant and sadly temporary. Here Clara subs for the Doctor while she uses her experience and how he would operate to good use so Clara has a bit of an edge. She kept all of the knowledge she learned including how to fly a TARDIS. She's off having her own adventures in Time and Space.
(Disclaimer - this is just my opinion, for what it's worth ;-)) I think it means that he thought she did well as the Doctor, but he's starting to realize (as Clara does not, and in my opinion, never will realize) that she's also picking up some of his own not-so-good aspects, like an addiction to the rush that adventure brings. She will eventually become overconfident in her abilities to "be the Doctor". She means well, but she will start to think that she is a better Doctor than he is, which can only lead to tears down the road.
But the last time I saw the TARDIS with its cameleon circuit off it looked cylindrical in "The Name of the Doctor". But again there was a TARDIS in "The Lodger" that also had it's cameleon circuit turned off and it looked bug-like.
seige mode is digferent to charmelion circuit off/ im guessing seige mode is everything off but walls put up first, if you turned things off it would look like the one in day of the doctor
In this episode the chameeion circuit wasn't off it was "siege" mode. Also the non-chameleon TARDIS in The Lodger was a make-shift TARDIS made by the Silence/Silents, it wasn't actually a TARDIS.
Flatline is one of my favorite Dr. Who episodes of the New Era hands down. Best episode of an abysmal Series 8 (not that there was any competition). Loved the concept (shrinking Tardis), The Doc doesn't know who the villains are, that the Doctor could help in limited amounts, loved the suspense and action (though I do tend to love eps where there is a high body count), loved that there were scenes that you ACTUALLY thought The Doctor was going to die and there was no BS romance between Pink and Clara. It focused on the sci fi plot and the actors were top notch. Fire Moffatt and hire Jamie Mathieson as Lead Writer for Doctor Who.
Rares Macovei Ugh, here we go... In 1993, there was an anniversary special called "Dimensions in Time" that aired as part of Children In Need, which featured all the surviving Doctors. They also had the not-so-brilliant idea to cross it over with EastEnders. So, the combination of trying to cram in five Doctors, plus their companions, the Rani (as antagonist), and the cast of EastEnders--all in the space of two very short parts (roughly 8 minutes each) televised over two days--and you get a hot mess.
In "The Eleventh Hour" The TARDIS is put on its side. In that position, the Doctor needed to climb out of it as it was vertical. In this, the TARDIS is put on its side in Clara's purse, and nothing on the inside changes.
It looks as though the doubles were only used for the closeup of the bag when the Doctor's hand was poking through it - although they got the stand-in to wear a similar outfit and hair to Jenna so they could match her up when she did her part so the two would be seamless. The hand double was probably also used for the scene where Clara's holding the TARDIS in front of her and receiving the sonic screwdriver and psychic paper (I assume that involved several shots and a greenscreen to hide the actor standing behind the TARDIS).
Surprised everyone liked this one. I thought it was a bit of a mess honestly. It didn't really seem to understand what it was doing or what its monster of the week was. It was still decent, but definitely lackluster compared to the rest in series 8. Series 8 up until now have all been at least 8/10 (mostly 10s though), this one was more of a 6/10. It contained some brilliant elements though. -spoilers: Capaldi's first truly epic speech as the Doctor in the tradition of great DW speeches like the Pandorica or the Rings of Akhaten. Clara playing the Doctor was a lot of fun especially with her having her own companion. The small TARDIS without the chameleon circuit on. The miniature Doctor having to communicate with Clara through earpiece. The horribly gruff unsympathetic probation worker and the his counterpart, the sympathetic graffiti asbo teen.
The first episode I liked this season. Only one question. The TARDIS has infinite power with the eye of harmony. An exploding star in the act of becoming a black hole [...] suspended in a permanent state of decay. So ... How can the TARDIS go flatline, no power ??
Ok so how do I get someone to read my Doctor Who script? Nobody accepts scripts from an unknown, but there must be some sneaky way to at least get the synopsis viewed by somebody on the inner circle...
Loved the interesting ideas but how was Missy watching Clara? Is it through the tech the doctor gave Clara at the beginning? but does that mean the doctor's wearing it?
I think they knew that the comparison was inevitable, but while "Fear Her" madly went off in all directions, "Flatline" navigated a clearer path. "Fear Her"--while a great premise--tried too hard to right every wrong and ended on a corny note. "Flatline" doesn't fall into this trap; the world is saved, but at a cost.
I liked this episode and this series, but to me, it seems like it's lacking something. The explosiveness of Matt Smith's episodes. The flapping about. Don't get me wrong, this series and Doctor is up there with the best, but ATM, it seems that it's a bit empty at some points. It is getting better though. I think I'm still accustomed to Matt being The Doctor. I think Peter will be one of the best Doctor's ever.
I quite liked this episode. At first the characters seemed flat and 2-dimensional, but they really gained some depth half-way through!
What you did there...
I see it.
OH.
OH WOW.
I literally took me like 5 minutes to get this. Lol
I don't get it
...
I adore this. Clara is the main role (WIN), The Doctor is trapped in an action figure (comedy WIN). They are attacked by 2D aliens (plot WIN). Perfect
What a brilliant episode! Really original, dark and funny.

The bare TARDIS reminded me of the Pandorica
omg never thought about it

"You'll have to Addams Family it", haha, one of the best scenes ever!
Anyone else notice the 'A113' on the train? The inside joke scene in Disney/Pixar films.
Yes,I was thinking that too
What's 'A113'?
One of the train’s featured in Flatline is clearly numbered A113. It's just a hidden joke amongst animators.
*****
Its Pixar Easter Egg in every pixar film.
I want that tardis rubix cube now!
Very true. It's b/c I didn't know what to call it and that guy said he wrote in the script that he called it a rubix cube, so I'm just calling it that.
It looks like a cube from portal
He also calls it "the tardis in siege mode" witch is way cooler =P
Loved this episode. Clara has proven to me, that she is definitely my favourite companion!
Very unique monsters in this episode. The forced perspective effects were really cool too. Probably my favourite episode this series. :)
A very interesting episode!!! And this has one of the best visual effects so far!!! The creatures was just creepily good!
It must have been fun for Peter Capaldi's stand in to stick his hand out of the little TARDIS... and also Clara's handbag.
The TARDIS is so cute tiny 😁
Flatline is my favorite episode of Series 8, and the first DW episode to make me scream out loud from a jump scare since Blink. When that hand from the Boneless comes out of nowhere and grabs that guy in the tunnel, I jumped out of skin. Didn't see it coming at all. Great job!
The rubiks cube tardis thing looks like the Tricksters box in the sarah Jane adventures
***** it does look like that as well :)
I think moffat is trying to tell us something here
***** he's the head writer. he's involved with every episode...
***** of course other people write for it. but as long as he's head writer he'll have to be heavily involved with the production of each episode. you even heard in the video that moffat and the flatline writer had discussions about plots characters and monsters. so if he wanted to plant seeds for future arcs within sombody elses episode, he could easily do so

i loved it! great monster, great dynamic and exploration of the doctor clara relationship, that i think for me is the thing that keeps me tuning in
honestly yeah the thing i loved most about series 8-9 is 12 and Clara's relationship and their character development and their story and just everything to be honest.. also 12 is my favourite doctor but i like 13 as well. I'm really excited for series 12, are you? :D
This episode was amazing!
"Technology was key in creating the CGI" woah.
That was a brilliant episode! Scary, funny perfect mix.
I really enjoyed the last two episodes. Jamie Mathieson has proven himself well.
The Boneless were terrific. Sinister and utterly creepy in their loping crackling malevolence
Best episode so far!
One of my favourite New Who episodes.
Yup, I think Mathieson is my new favorite DW writer.
Fantastic episode once again but.....did you have to remind us all of Fear Her?
Because fear her was a crap episode in most peoples opinion
I liked it enough.

(As you can guess from my avatar, I'm a railway enthusiast)
Favourite episode so far this series
One of the best episodes. Beings of 2nd D. Amazing!
Did anyone else get a kinda Ace vibe from Rigsy?
I loved this episode like all others of Capaldi, only one question: if a tardis in its true form is a cylinder, why is a tardis in its miniature true form a cube?
Pretty sure it was in 'siege mode' which is why it was a cube
Did anybody else notice the bookshelves in the TARDIS kept re-appearing and dissapearing?
Ooh another episode they shot in my home county! Awesome!
Would love to see the boneless back in an episode that's well written. Beautifully realised.
So happy when they film in the Forest of Dean and Gloucester
my friend's dad helped film this episode!!!!👍
Did you or your friend get to do anything cool :D
@@puppycatsbeei found you in the wild
It's amazing how they make very long episodes in a week, I mean I takes longer for 40+ minutes in a film to be made
Spooked by Doctor Who... Genuine fear... Good game, good game...
How the hell was this scary. Doctor Who hasn't been scary since 2009. Now it feels childish
Tom Monty Nah, I was havin' a giggle. I did enjoy it, but it wasn't actually scary. (Maybe a little)
Matt I still find The Waters of Mars, Midnight and The Satan Pit scary. I never found The Empty Child scary and as for Blink, I just find it fascinating. A couple of moments in Series 5-6 have been scary but ever since it became Clara Who in series 7, I've found her so annoying that it can't be scary.

I love this episode so much!
Great episode- really reminded me of Abbott's 'Flatland'
BBC, make Siege mode puzzle cubes with series 7 figures inside, i'd buy it for probably 50 bucks or so.
flatline is my fav episode
Doctor Clara is good, but Doctor Donna is better
Both are great but Doctor Donna's knowledge was imbued to her when she touched The Metacrisis Doctor's hand post regeneration. It was instant and sadly temporary. Here Clara subs for the Doctor while she uses her experience and how he would operate to good use so Clara has a bit of an edge. She kept all of the knowledge she learned including how to fly a TARDIS. She's off having her own adventures in Time and Space.
"You were an exceptional doctor Clara... Goodness had nothing to do with it" I never understood this was it compliment or not?
(Disclaimer - this is just my opinion, for what it's worth ;-)) I think it means that he thought she did well as the Doctor, but he's starting to realize (as Clara does not, and in my opinion, never will realize) that she's also picking up some of his own not-so-good aspects, like an addiction to the rush that adventure brings. She will eventually become overconfident in her abilities to "be the Doctor". The shrinking TARDIS gag is like Alice in Wonderland. Am I right?
10:29 Hold up, William Osman?! I know it could he a coincidence, but it could be
I would like to know how they did the couch melting effect.
It was most likely stopmotion.
I agree with Stormageddon101 it was probably stop motion maybe also with some light CGI.
But the last time I saw the TARDIS with its cameleon circuit off it looked cylindrical in "The Name of the Doctor". But again there was a TARDIS in "The Lodger" that also had it's cameleon circuit turned off and it looked bug-like.
Well seeing as though the interior of the TARDIS often changes I'm sure that if the doctor fixed the chameleon circuit, the exterior could change to.
The Doctor said it was a "Siege mode", which reminds me that sometimes I can't hear what they say clearly. Don't know if it's me or the sound design.
seige mode is digferent to charmelion circuit off/ im guessing seige mode is everything off but walls put up first, if you turned things off it would look like the one in day of the doctor
In this episode the chameeion circuit wasn't off it was "siege" mode. Also the non-chameleon TARDIS in The Lodger was a make-shift TARDIS made by the Silence/Silents, it wasn't actually a TARDIS.

Amazing episode
Jaime Mathieson should be writing more episodes for the show and not most of the soap writers who have NO CLUE about the show.
What's the song that starts at 3:43?
I actually liked this episode
No don't mention "Fear Her" ..we don't speak of it
It's got its problems, but no episode is as bad as the unnameable 30th anniversary monstrosity.
+Mikko Kivisto There wasn't any 30th anniversary anything AFAIK. The show ended in 89 and got a movie in 96. So what exactly happened in 93 ?
Rares Macovei
Ugh, here we go... In 1993, there was an anniversary special called "Dimensions in Time" that aired as part of Children In Need, which featured all the surviving Doctors. So, the combination of trying to cram in five Doctors, plus their companions, the Rani (as antagonist), and the cast of EastEnders--all in the space of two very short parts (roughly 8 minutes each) televised over two days--and you get a hot mess.
I'm still scared of walls thanks to this episode
The metal box looks like the pandorica
Now the tardis is smaller, it's kind of 'more bigger' on the inside
Loved it
7:19 what type of train is that
At 2:37 that’s not even Clara
This also would’ve been good with Tom Baker too
But it’s still good
3:58 - 4:04 anyone else interested in what those other Episodes and Monsters were?
Peter Capaldi has a hand stunt double .....wow
I love that Clara is going to a dark dark place.
"It's smaller on the outside". She was right.
Capaldi Back please
In "The Eleventh Hour" The TARDIS is put on its side. In that position, the Doctor needed to climb out of it as it was vertical. In this, the TARDIS is put on its side in Clara's purse, and nothing on the inside changes.
Journey to the centre of the tardis had it laid on it's side. Eleventh Hour had the tardis burning and dying
More stories from this writer please.
Why the fuck did they use body doubles for the handbag scene ?
Capaldi may have been off filming something else
***** Yeah I think you are right! I am sure he was filming for the Doctor Who Experience.
They use doubles for scenes like that so that the actors can film other scenes at the same time. It saves time & money.
Why are they adding that info to make people miss 11 ö
(btw isn't the tardis' exterior almost invincible? was the siege mode necessary)
It was weakening due to a lack of energy.
This episode!: Death by CGI. Yay!
The horribly gruff unsympathetic probation worker and the his counterpart, the sympathetic graffiti asbo teen.
so who do we think Missy is ? and what do u think she meant by "Clara, My Clara, I have chosen well"
Well, there are worse places to be trapped, Doctor.
first the BBC kill Jeff in casualty, now they kill him in Doctor Who .. He's having a bad few weeks
Did anyone realise the Doctors hair changed throughout the episode
Yes someone noticed it, it went short when he was in siege mode after he used his hand to move the tardis
this is awsome a min TARDIS;-{D
Series 1?
I live in Gloucester
The first episode I liked this season. Only one question. The TARDIS has infinite power with the eye of harmony. An exploding star in the act of becoming a black hole [...] suspended in a permanent state of decay. So ... How can the TARDIS go flatline, no power ??
The doctor continuously gets compared to a dalek... Will this end up somewhere?
Ok so how do I get someone to read my Doctor Who script? Nobody accepts scripts from an unknown, but there must be some sneaky way to at least get the synopsis viewed by somebody on the inner circle...
How the hell is that hat staying on that kids head
OO, has the TARDIS been hit by the TCE?? The Master might have a hand in that!
3:18 what is he doing with that cap sort it out mate
Loved the interesting ideas
but how was Missy watching Clara?
Is it through the tech the doctor gave Clara at the beginning?
but does that mean the doctor's wearing it?
It was an Ipad. The Promised land is an Apple Store :D
Matt OOOOORRR... It's just a continuity error
Clara was a better Doctor, than 13 is....
The audio balancing in this isn't the best.
3:10 OMFG hat ugly hat ...
I loved this episode, but did they really have to give 'Fear Her' a mention! It's like the worst episode...
It's not THAT bad. It's bad, but I can think of a large number of stories worse than it.
Wait why did they get another guy to put his hand out of the mini TARDIS, why didn't they just get Peter Capaldi?
Save time. While they doubles were filming that, the Main Actors had more time to film other scenes. Just a guess...
Who knew, who knew... rigsy... face the raven... clara...
I'm sad Riggsy was never a companion.
