I had one dirty Pentel Aquash water brush with just water and one Pentel Aquash filled with indian ink wash (india ink + water) that was totally clogged up and nothing came out. I followed the video instructions for both of them and now I have two very clean water brushes, one with water and another india ink wash, working just perfectly! Thank you very much!!
if it werent for this i would have bought a new waterbrush! you just saved me a couple of bucks, i thought mine were already broken turns out theres an easy fix to it! now it easily dispenses water again
Hooray! I was starting to think I was going to have to buy a new waterbrush but thanks to you, the old one seems to flowing well again. Thank you for such a clear and helpful explanation on what to do. You made it easy to fix!
great help! I had to change the sponge on mine because it was eroding away and it broke off. Quickly cut up a new piece of sponge and it was like new. Thanks from Portugal!
Thank you for this! It was super helpful. Mine were so bad the foam actually rotted to a black mush. I was able to cut a tiny piece of soft sponge and replace it. After a thorough wash and rinse, it works wonders now, with great flow!
@@seakepp First you have do disassemble the water brush tip and replace the sponge. I used a regular dish washing sponge, cutting out a wide strip and used tweezers to put in place around the nylon bristles. it helps to roll the sponge strip before putting it back, but the tweezers did the trick for me.
TFS...you just saved me from having to buy another set. I use distilled H2O and haven’t ever had a problem with growth of baddies BUT I have one brush that intermittently floods everything. So I gave your suggestion a go and wallah...the little white thing was barely pushed in. I pushed it in gradually and tried it several times until it now works perfectly. Would give you a hundred thumbs up if I could. Thanks again for the video and explanation.
Very helpful tip Jon!! :D Mine had all kinds of organisms in them like Jellyfish, sardines, and even a small octopus........ LOL just kidding! Thank you so much my friend ^^
I had clogged brushes that I thought were broken and now I feel dumb. They are all working just fine after I dismantled them to clean properly. Thank god I found your video by accident. I got so many water brushes now.
Thanks a billion for the tutorial. The internal mechanism on my brushpens was fitted so tightly I assumed it couldn't be disassembled, so I ended up having a couple of these brushpens that could only be used as brushes due to internal blockage. While I did end up damaging the black rim around the bristles on one of my pens trying to dislodge the interior, in the end it did come out and after a thorough cleaning the pen works again.
Thank you for this tutorial! One of my brushes got dirty and I didn’t know how to take it apart. Thankfully, I found your video and it helped me out a lot! :)
This was so helpful! I was super freaked when I thought I saw mold growing in my brushes. But thanks to you, I at least know how to counter it. You are amazing!
Thank you! I actually use mine for sewing: they are great for rewetting temporary basting glue, removing water soluble markers or treating creases in delicate fabrics before ironing.
Omg this video saved me so much time because I was in the middle of an art project when my brush stop working and I thought I broke it but since then I be cleaned it out and it works like new again.
I thought my brush is broken 😥 i kinda worry me there. This vid really helps me so thank you for teaching me how to fix my watercolor pen brush!!! I'm impressed that it's starting to work again!! Thank you again 😊
Great cleaning tutorial and the push I need to do mine. Thank you for showing us that it isn’t as scary as I thought it would be. I dread to think what is living in mine errr
Thanks Suzanne, its not scary at all, just a bit fiddly, there's also some good comments on here suggesting using distilled water to refill them as it has less tiny particles that can block the valve, worth a try I think.
Thank you kind man, I followed the instruction and my water brush is just as good as new! I just reassembled it in few minutes and voila - it's not clogged
Thank you so much! I have the same water brushes and they are hard to come by from where I live. I have to place mail order and have them shipped so I really can't afford to throw them away. I panicked when my Aquash wasn't dispensing water. You instructions were clear and easy to follow! My water brushes are now working perfectly fine and cleaner, too!
I'm usually skeptical with these kinda things, but it does work. 100%! I didn't have actual bleach but bathroom bleach and I think any bleach works because I only waited for about 30 minutes, put it together and after 3 months of dealing with a clogged brush, it works! Thank you so much!
Great video. I only discovered how to strip and clean them some months ago - a friends young daughter showed me - kids Eh... what a revelation. I have always struggled with mould in the barrels and flow problems, and I had probably a dozen or so dud ones in my draw that I've had to replace over the years. I would clean out the barrels with a bent pipe cleaner but the regulator bit would get gunked up with slime and stop flowing to the point of being unusable. I find a solution of "Oxi" (Stuff in the pink tubs) works well, it actually helps break down the algae and other gunk. Another thing I have started doing now is alternating my two sets every few weeks in this hot weather, giving the used set a quick clean then leave them to dry out thoroughly in an old mobile phone box before I reassemble them. I find having a clean dry set ready to go, less frustrating than fiddling around once one starts playing up.
Thanks for the tips Peter, As I was cleaning the brushes, I thought it would be a good idea for the manufactures to market a spares pack with the regulator, bristles, sponge bit etc.
Thank You so much I stored mine away for several months with moist bristles and when I went to use them they reeked of mildew now I know it's safe for bleach water
As with the other many happy successes mentioned in these comments, I, too, used your approach and solved the "no flow" problem I had on a Pentel like yours. Thank you for such a straightforward tutorial:-) BTW, I used a small drinking straw that fit perfectly over the bristle end to help encourage the pushing needed to get everything apart at that point you were coaxing it with the tweezers.
I was struggling to clean my brush for a couple of years, didn't know why it never came out well, like... it always looking dirty. AND FINALLY, after watching your video, my brush is literally looking like brand new and works very well! Thank you sooo much for sharing this info, you saved a thousand of brushes!!
Tadah! 🎉 i didnt even need to wash it (literally brand new only used it once sinc eit never worked properly. just took it apart like you showed and put it back together and it works so much better now
I tried to un screw the topp black part but it didn't work 😓 so I looked this up and I watched your video and I was mind blown 😅 thank you so much for this !
Thank you so much for this video! I was actually going to throw away a Pentel water brush because I thought it was dirty and not working well. It turns out it just needs a bit of cleaning. Currently have mine soaking in water/bleach!
Thank you so much for this. You really helped me through. Was super freaked out why my water brush starts fraying (new to water brush) and turns out there was this small eraser debris that got caught in the bristles.
Thank you so much! Question - so my Pentel water pens have been sitting with ink in them for a couple years and it's really dried up. The ink is so dried up in the tips that I can't push them through. Don't want to damage them. Any suggestions?
Thanks for this. I just pulled out my water brushes (varying brands) after too long and realized i never emptied them 🤢 i'm going to try and clean them out tonight
Is it ok to use alcohol instead of bleach, or will it damage the brush? Thank you so much! Nicely explained info, great video, narrated in such a nice, soothing voice! :)
Great video! Would you recommend adding a few drops of bleach to the water brush and squeezing it through, rinsing it, then storing it open to dry as preventative maintenance?
Thank you so much!!! My brush is working again.. also i wasn't careful while putting it back together so its a bit away from breaking up 😂😂 bdw its really helpful
Very good video as I’m always looking for something that is reusable. I’ve heard that with the pastel brush when using the India ink it is a continuous flow, where there is no control. Is this accurate? I was under the assumption that you control ink flow by squeezing the fill chamber. Any feedback would be appreciated
Can chlorine be used instead of bleach? Currently I don't have bleach but I have chlorine, so maybe that can be used with the water instead of bleach. And thank you so much for showing how to clean water brushes!
I don't know why mine never grow microorganisms, perhaps because l often leave the lids off and store them with the bristles up - but they still got clogged - presumably with paint. Thanks so much!

Yooo! My brushes really needed this, thank you! I didn't even realize there was biomold in the tube!
Hooray! I was starting to think I was going to have to buy a new waterbrush but thanks to you, the old one seems to flowing well again. Thank you for such a clear and helpful explanation on what to do. You made it easy to fix!
Glad I could help!
thank you so much! close to tears since it wasn't working and it's my favorite brush, working like new now!
Glad it helped!
great help! I had to change the sponge on mine because it was eroding away and it broke off. Quickly cut up a new piece of sponge and it was like new.

hi, mine feel off, may i ask for a bit more detail on how you used a sponge to replace it?
@@seakepp First you have do disassemble the water brush tip and replace the sponge. Fantastic! One of my Pentels stopped flowing and was just about to chuck it, thank you for saving me some cash :)
Thanks!!! This video helped me tons! I used The Masters brush cleaner to clean the bristles. Worked well.
So helpful thankyou! I just keep grabbing another when not working so well. I can now go back and revive my faves. Thankyou so much!
You're welcome Angelina, I'm glad it helped.
Thank you so so much, this saved my water brushes and stopped from spending money on new ones 💓💓💓

Good thing i found out before mine molded..
Just purchased my very first set of brushes for painting my mounted fish and this post will help tremendously ! ! ! Thank you Sir .
You are saving water brushes one at the time - or in my case 6 in one time
Thank you!

Thank you very much, I have a pentel brush and it’s been months since it worked properly
Thank you sir! I too cleaned my india ink pen. It looks lovely.
This video was a lifesaver! Thank you!
Great video! Thanks for doing this. I wish I had this video as reference a few months ago when I cleaned mine. Very helpful!!!
Thanks Todd, I'm glad the video was helpful for you 👍
This works! I did this with the pen that came with the koi watercolor set it wasn’t flowing at all now it is
Thank you so much for this video! I was actually going to throw away a Pentel water brush because I thought it was dirty and not working well. It turns out it just needs a bit of cleaning. Currently have mine soaking in water/bleach!
Thank you for such clear instructions. I can’t unscrew my Pentel water reservoir. Do you have a solution for this too.
Thannk you! I use a different brand but couldnt figure out how to get the bristls out to clean!
Could you show how you did it with the derwent one? I couldn’t get the thingie out at all :(
thank you this is very helpfuol and revived a brush that I didn't use!
You’re awesome! 😊 Thank you for sharing this! 🙏🏻🎨🖌
Pipe cleaners, straw cleaners and even eyebrow/eyelash brushes work really well to scrub away the algae!
Thanks for the info, much appreciated!
Thank you!!! It worked on my kuretake water brush!
omg thank you so much for this video!! saved me from getting new brushes so thanks alot

I honestly don't know? just test a few bristles first, I would think it will be ok, but just test to be sure...
@@smoothie77drawingpainting Thank you so much!

@@mikuenjoyerXD I ended up using bleach. With bleach worked just fine, like he said it would! :)

Thanks for this excellent information!
Great video and information... very helpful! Thank you - much appreciated.

Great video ! Can I use vinegar instead of bleach? My brush is clogged but doesn’t have mold in it…
I only use boiled distilled water in my aquashes. Forgot one with water inside for a couple of months in my bag. Was as good as new when I found it
The derwent ones aren’t push out brushes. Or I’m doing something wrong, but I can't push the bristles out. They really need a clean though
I’m having the same problem can’t get my derwent tip out!

Has anyone lost the little white sponge nib before? Where do you guys get the replacement? Or did you just buy new brush pen altogethe
Any idea on how to glue fallen bristles back? Had an 'accident' while cleaning my brush pen and some bristles fell apart. 😔
I have a fine Derwent waterbrush with no flow. If I try to push the white nib thing down, will it flow better?
I'll try this later. See if it works.
