As far as history shows, Khmers migrated from South Asia during 1st and 6th centuries AD and formed a community Chenla located north of Cambodia and south of Laos today. Funan kingdom existed even before 1st century AD and spanned from part of south Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and north Malaysia. When Funan kingdom weakened in the 7th century AD, the Khmers overtook it. Funan people and Khmer people are two different ethnics.
