    Just as a tip for soldering in the future, you want to touch the soldering iron to the surface you want to apply the solder to (in this case the LED and battery pack wires) and NOT the solder wire itself. So, the tip of the soldering iron goes against the LED/battery pack wires to heat them up, then you touch the solder wire to the hot LED wires to form the connection, and finally you remove the solder wire and the soldering iron to let the newly connected wires cool. You can then go back in and kind of “clean up” the connection with the tip of the soldering iron by gently dragging the melted solder around if needed.
    Loved the video and can’t wait to see more in the future!

      Also flux! Even if you're using flux-core solder, you need to apply this magic paste to the wires before heating. It dissolves any surface oxidation, which helps the liquid metal bond to the wire.

    • @chrisvanmill6020
      @chrisvanmill6020 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      Yes this! Heat the wire, not the solder. Also if the solder balls up and has a dull gloss to it, its a dirty solder. Clean the iron tip with a damp sponge between every other solder job.

    • @DarkAthena76
      @DarkAthena76 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Came here to say all the above. Solder flows toward heat and a light application of flux is your friend. Also, use leaded solder.

    • @adriagan2469

      this is so interesting! i do stained glass and this is the exact opposite of what we do- i never touch the iron to the copper foil/the seams between the glass, i only ever "pick up" the solder with the iron and let it flow to the seam without contact or preheating. this completely makes sense for wires! and clears up why the one time i soldered wires together my join was so bulky and goofy looking lol.

    Hey! Beautiful work!!! I know this is an older video, but something else that would help with soldering is a thing called flux; it's a white goop that helps the solder want to stick to metal better.

  • @rowansmith422

    for soldering - not sure about the metal beading up, but twist the wires together first before you actually start soldering - it gets a better connection and makes actually soldering easier

    Oatey solder paste flux comes in a lil white tube. Dip the tips of your wires in the tube to coat with flux then tin your wires( coat with solder). Then the helping hands and when you touch the tip of the iron to the wires it is so satisfying as they just join together.

    Soldering tips! So what you are doing is called “painting” this is when you touch the solder directly to the soldering iron to get it to melt. It’s best to heat up your metal with the iron and touch the solder to your hot wire and not the iron.
    Another tip to make it a little easier is to connect your wires instead of balancing them. You can do this in two ways. You can create a hook on each end and hook them together or you can twist the wires together. This will ensure a strong connection and make it easier!
    Soldering takes a lot of patience and I would recommend getting tip tinner because if your soldering iron gets covered in enough solder it won’t be able to melt the solder and make connections anymore.
    That’s all I can think of rn but if you have more questions I can try and answer them!

    When soldering, always heat the wires with the soldering iron - not the solder itself. Touch the solder to the wires from the other side from the iron and wait for the hot wires to melt the solder. The solder won't fuse with the wire if the wire isn't hot enough to melt the solder. It also helps to start by melting a tiny bit of solder onto the iron to "wet" the tip; this increases heat transfer a lot and makes everything faster and easer.

    I'm not an expert in soldering by any means, but I do do it fairly often, and weird beading that doesn't stick might have to do with the wires being too cold compared to the solder. It'll cool quicker than it should and won't stick. You can sometimes get around this by holding the soldering iron behind the wire, with the solder wire in front, so the heat has to travel through the LED wires (or whatever else you're wiring) first before getting to and melting the solder

    A tip for soldering: if you're having trouble keeping the wires touching, twist em together. Ideally, you want it to look kinda like a twizzler, doing this will also make a much stronger connection once it's soldered together. Also, idk if you have one already, but please please *please* have some kind of device to push fumes away from your face, that stuff is nasty. You want the solder to basically flow onto the wire, it should look like it's just coating the wires, having a big blob of solder isn't ideal (but isn't necessarily a problem, it just doesn't look great) Be sure to wipe your iron off whenever it gets the black crusty stuff on it, it should look like shiny chrome while you're working with it. You should also, before you actually start soldering, apply some solder to your iron, again, going for a shiny chrome look, just get a nice blob on there and wipe it away, leaving a thing coating on the iron. (This is called "tinning" and is also what you're doing to the wires themselves) Practice really helps, and as long as you haven't burnt anything, it's pretty forgiving, you can just reheat the solder and try again.

    Those things scared the bejezeus out of me. I dropped down to the depths and landed on one. I couldn't see what it was just one thought... RUN AWAY! RUN LINK RUN!

    I have been borrowing my friend's copy of the game since I refuse to pay $70 for a base game, but it went on sale so now I own my own copy. I haven't come across this guy yet, but he looks cool! Your patience with the details astounds me.

    Love the frog. You should turn other characters into frog versions of themselves. An army of frogs. So many frogs.

    A good idea for bumps or any kind of indentation for patterns, is to use cling film and a blunt tool to draw them on that way you don't get the sharp outlines - look at North of the Border videos he uses this technique alot 😁

    I could listen to you talk 24/7. Since you have the grass, some resin, clay, and great with LEDs. You could visit the Depths again and craft a Lightroot

    Amazing work and very detailed! I love watching your channel, the Korok torture device is still my favorite XD
    Also, not sure if you are aware, but try to avoid touching Resin directly with your hand ( 20:48 ). Most resin used for crafting is highly toxic and its best practice to wear proper masks and gloves when working with the stuff. Sometimes people know and sometimes people don't but either way always be careful when using Resin.

    • @CrossingCrafts
      @CrossingCrafts  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I use a brand called apple barrel paints, they are so cheap (like 60 cents a bottle) and I couldn’t believe how good they were for that price! They definitely have a few colors that need lots of layers, but such is the burden of a 60 cent bottle of paint lmaoo

    pre-tin (add solder and flux to) the wires using the helping hand, then when you join them, they join easier.

  • @Zeldur
    @Zeldur 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    For soldering, use flux. Also, flux expires. I don't remember how long it takes to expire, but I found that out when I was telling my friend about it while using flux branded Radioshack. Maybe 6 months iirc?. Also, the Frox looks awweeeesome. Makes me appreciate it so much more

    This is incredible! Do you have to do the whole clay figure in one go so it does not dry, or is it stored somehow? I want to do this with my students

    • @CrossingCrafts
      @CrossingCrafts  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I use polymer clay (specifically Sculpey Original, you can find it at Walmart for super cheap on an individal scale, but for a whole classroom it might get expensive) and it doesn't cure until you bake it in an oven! I use a regular kitchen oven as well since it doesn't require high temps to bake. You can leave it out uncovered for a long time and nothing will happen, it's great!

    For the grass, maybe an overgrown bargainer’s statue? A Warped forest themed build sounds cool, but I’m not sure if the grass is the right color. It also reminds me of ori and the blind forest and the glowing mushroom biome in terraria, but those seem like they would need more LEDs.
